English: Lizards can be classified as ectotherms, as they do not have the means of regulating their own body temperature internally (Bakker 1). For lizards and other reptiles thermoregulate, or maintain their body temperature, through external means. They use certain behavioral traits to keep their body temperature fairly constant (Meek 1).
Lizards have been marked as one of the most discussed ectotherms as there is much curiosity in how they are able to survive in deserts with temperatures from night to day ranging from 4 degrees celsius to 30 degrees celsius, all the while maintaining a 10 degree body temperature (Bakker 1). They manage to do this through their behavioral changes, such as burrowing at night and then seeking sun when needed and going into the shade when they become too warm (Huey 1). Proto ještěrky a další plazi udržují tělesnou teplotu vnějšími prostředky. Používají určité behaviorální rysy, aby udrželi svou tělesnou teplotu poměrně konstantní (Meek 1). Ještěrky byly označeny jako jedny z nejdiskutovanějších ektotermních živočichů, protože je hodně zajímavé, jak jsou schopny přežít v pouštích s nočními a denními teplotami v rozmezí od 4 do 30 °C, a to vše při udržování tělesné teploty 10 °C. (Bakker 1). Daří se jim to prostřednictvím změn jejich chování, jako je zahrabávání se v noci a pak vyhledání slunce, když je potřeba, a odchod do stínu, když je příliš teplo (Huey 1). Jak je znázorněno na grafu, když je teplota v noci nižší nebo když je příliš horko, ještěrka zůstane ve své noře.
