Deutsch: "Das Bildnis folgt einem zu Lebzeiten des bayerischen Herzogs verbreiteten Porträttypus. Als Vorbild diente Hans von Aachens ganzfiguriges Porträt Wilhelms V., das sich zusammen mit seinem Gegenstück, einem Bildnis seiner Gattin Renata von Lothringen, in der Sammlung des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums, München, befindet. Wilhelm V. trat 1579 die Nachfolge seines Vaters Herzogs Albrecht V. an. Er war einer der wichtigsten Propagatoren der Gegenreformation, was sich in seiner nachhaltigen Unterstützung des Jesuitenordens, auch durch den Bau der Jesuitenkirche St. Michael in München zeigt. Er pflegte eine prächtige Hofhaltung und war den Künsten sehr zugetan. 1595 berief er seinen Sohn Maximilian zum Mitregenten, im Oktober 1597 dankte er schließlich ab. Ab 1598 wurde in Schleißheim ein Herrenhaus für den abgedankten Herzog errichtet, der dort seine letzten Jahre in religiöser Einkehr verbrachte. Dieses Herrenhaus war die Basis für die später erstellte (unvollendete) prächtige Schlossanlage in Schleißheim. Vgl. Jacoby, Joachim, Hans von Aachen 1552-1615.
