Description |
English: This double cabinet features the combination of architectural elements and relief carving that is characteristic of French furniture of the period. The elegant figural designs of the door panels often feature graceful but conventional allegorical figures copied from prints. Here, for example, the symmetrical ovals on the upper doors depict Minerva, goddess of wisdom (in military affairs) and Diana, chaste goddess of the hunt. Above and below are carved the four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. The base of the chest is a replacement. |
