Summary
DescriptionWomen in Military Service for America Memorial - upper level looking N - 2011.JPG |
English: A view of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Originally known as the Hemicycle, this ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery was opened in 1932. Along the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the George Washington Memorial Parkway (then known as the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway), it was constructed in celebration of the bicentennial of George Washington's birthday. Unfinished, unused, and in disrepair by the early 1980s, it was transformed into the Women in Military Service for America Memorial and opened to the public on October 20, 1997.
This image was taken after emerging from one of the stairs in the south side of the Hemicycle which leads up to the terrace on top of the memorial. The photographer is looking north across the terrace at some of the glass panels which form the rear of the memorial and act as a skylight for the exhibit gallery below. Also visible is the rear of the apse of the Hemicycle. To the middle right can just be barely seen two of the pillars which form the north ceremonial Schley Gate of Arlington National Cemetery. |
