Monserrate ("sawed mountain") refers to the vertical cracks caused by earthquakes. Spanish immigrants images like this to Puerto Rico. The Virgin Mary's image was popular in Puerto Rico, where carved and painted versions were widely copied for mass-produced prints and prayer cards. |
