MacGruber is an upcoming 2010 American parody action comedy film based on the Saturday Night Live sketch of the same name.

Plot

Will Forte stars as MacGruber.

In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber (Will Forte) has sworn a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that's been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter von Cunth (Val Kilmer), MacGruber figures he's the only one tough enough for the job. Assembling an elite team of experts—Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) and Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig)—MacGruber will navigate an army of assassins to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice.

Production

Kristen Wiig reprises her role as MacGruber's assistant Vicki.

On June 1, 2009, Will Forte confirmed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon that there will be a MacGruber movie, written by Forte, Taccone, and Solomon. Forte and Wiig will star, with additional cast to be determined. Taccone will direct, with production beginning August 2009. On July 29, 2009, Jimmy Fallon said that it would be filming in Albuquerque, New Mexico.[1]

Professional wrestlers The Great Khali, Kane, M.V.P. and Chris Jericho will make cameo appearances in the film.[2] Actor Derek Mears stated on his Twitter feed that he also appears in a small cameo.[3]

Val Kilmer has been cast to play the villain, Dieter von Cunth. Bill Hader talked to New York about the film and he said that he "read the script and it sounds like a hard-R comedy and it blew his mind". It is currently set for a release date of May 21, 2010.

Legal disputes

The film has stirred up controversy with Lee David Zlotoff, creator of the TV series MacGyver, whose contract stipulates he retains the right to a film version of the TV series. His lawyer has sent several cease-and-desist letters and is currently meeting with litigators to determine a course of action. Bill Hader responded to this as being a "load of crap" and calling Zlotoff a jackoff. So far no suit has been brought.[4]

Marketing

Pictures of the feature film were leaked on the internet on January 6, 2010. A two-minute red band trailer was released on January 19, 2010, and the next day a green-band trailer was released.[5]

On April 19, 2010, Forte, Wiig and Phillippe will be guest hosts on WWE Raw from the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey to promote the movie.[6]
