English: Thirunandikkarai Inscription (Vikramaditya Varaguna) - 9th century AD (Trivandrum Huzur Office Plates). The 9th-century Vikramaditya Varaguna inscription mentions a royal lady named Murukan Chendhi – daughter of Lord of Thenkanadu – became the devadasi of Thirunanthikara temple. It is among the oldest known inscriptions about the Devadasi tradition in Kerala, and that women from wealthy ruling class devoted themselves as Devadasi of major temples. |
