Art+Feminism 2022

As we enter our ninth campaign year, we remain dedicated to building a community of activists who are committed to closing information gaps related to gender, feminism, and the arts, on Wikipedia (and beyond).

Yet we know, that in this third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, that our community of organizers has changed as many of you have had to reprioritize your lives around new familial responsibilities, job loss, the loss of loved ones, or other significant changes and have not been able to organize Art+Feminism activities. We do appreciate that you all have stayed connected as readers of our newsletters, donors to our fundraising efforts, and attendees of Art+Feminism events around the globe.

We are grateful that you have remained committed to this essential work. If you will be joining us this year, we want to reiterate our commitment to community care and ask that you do the same. If you’d like to join the campaign and organize an edit-a-thon, panel, or meetup, please contact us. We’ll connect you with a regional ambassador who can help you with your event planning.

If you’ve reached out to us recently, then you know we’ve spent several months working to develop equity and anti-racism policies and practices to ensure our operations align with our mission. We look forward to sharing these developments soon!

2021 Call for Action Art Commission

Open call for artists to create an original, open-license work which helps to visualize Art+Feminism. The work will be used by the global Art+Feminism community in future Art+Feminism campaigns. The Call to Action Art Commission was established by Art+Feminism in 2017. Under this program, artists create a Creative Commons licensed work that is hosted on Wikimedia Commons. In 2021, we are celebrating the Global South, limiting applicants to artists located in regions where the curators of the call reside:  African countries, Brazil, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

We’re interested in working with artists that align with our values (which centers all our work), see their own art as a form of activism, and can help visualize what Art+Feminism looks like. Interested artists should fill out this brief form for consideration. Up to two selected applicants will receive a 2000$ (USD) artist fee for their work each. All applicants will be eligible to attend a workshop about WikiCommons on August  18.

Art+Feminism 2020-2021 Campaign

We write with enthusiasm inviting you to join this work in 2021 as we continue to address the gender gap and center on the work of women, feminist, BIPOC, queer, non-binary, and immigrant art and artists.

In the past few years, we’ve typically announced a theme we’ve set for the campaign, but this year we’re intentionally welcoming you to organize a theme or topic that is the most relevant to you and your community.

To aid in this effort, as we celebrate Wikipedia's 20th birthday, we’re hosting a series of workshops for the community to connect and learn about what is happening in our various global communities and discuss and brainstorm different topics and themes together. As you contemplate joining our 2021 campaign, Art+Feminism wants to reassert our commitment to community care, which we released in November 2020. As the pandemic continues, affecting regions of our international community to varying degrees, we want to ask, “What is safest for the most vulnerable people who might want to attend your event?” To help aid that question, we’ve created virtual resources to help organizers (new and old) think about and plan a virtual event.

We also recognize that not everyone will have the capacity to organize an Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon. There are a number of other ways to participate in our campaign this year:

• Organize a meetup, panel or conversation
• Attend one of the many virtual Art+Feminism events around the world (more being added regularly)
• Participate in surveys, like “Sharing your A+F Story”
• Follow us on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)
• Help amplify by sharing our newsletters and social media posts
• Make a donation or help us fundraise

No matter what, we value you as a member of this community. If you are unable to participate in any of these ways, we understand, and look forward to when we can actively engage with you again.

To Organize an Event

1. Consult our Organizers Quick Guide. Currently available in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.
2. Contact us by email at info@artandfeminism.org to learn more and to let us know that you are organizing an event.
3. Create a program on the Program & Events Dashboard (instructions below).
4. List your editathon by submitting your event details via this form.
5. Learn how to edit clicking the Resources tab on this Meet up page.

How We Organize

From the beginning Art+Feminism has paid careful attention to how and where we organize our events, prioritizing off-wiki channels of communication. We use the Programs & Events Dashboard instead of meetup pages, and we are collecting the list of events on our website, rather than here. We do this because our UX/UI review found that, because we had so many events and the wiki interface is confusing to new users, this main meet up page was difficult to parse and folks were missing events in their towns.

DELIVER THIS INFO TO YOUR PARTICIPANTS

To get your participants signed in to this page you need to have them go to that kinda long URL at the top of your page, e.g. https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/MoMA/MoMA_ArtAndFeminism_2020. We think the best way to accomplish this is to link to this page from your Facebook, Eventbrite, Google form, etc. If you are hellbent on using a meetup page, please still link to the Dashboard Program and use it for attendance. We *NEED* to keep all that info in here, as it necessary for outcomes and reporting.

When you arrive at that page your participants will be invited to “Log in with Wikipedia” or “Sign up with Wikipedia.” If they have accounts they can log in with the first button; they will be giving permission for the Dashboard to access their Wiki credentials via OAuth. If they don’t have an account yet, they can use the second button.

But I already made a meetup page?

If you already made a page, we still need you to create a Dashboard Program for attendance. You can make the decision as to whether you move all of your content over there, or keep it on the meetup page. If you have already promoted the meetup page URL, you should probably keep the meetup page up, but again, we need you to use the Dashboard Program for attendance.

Art+Feminism is a do-it-with-others campaign to improve coverage on feminism, gender and the arts on Wikipedia. In a 2011 survey, Wikimedia found that less than 13% of its contributors are female.^[1]. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect is not: content is skewed by gaps in participation. Art+Feminism invites people of all gender identities and expressions to address this imbalance by participating in communal updating of Wikipedia’s entries. Founded in 2014 by Siân Evans, Jacqueline Mabey, Michael Mandiberg and Laurel Ptak. Since 2014, over 18,000 people at 1,260 events around the world have participated in our edit-a-thons, resulting in the creation and improvement of nearly 84,000 articles on Wikipedia and sister projects.

The project has been written about extensively, including in Canadian Art, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and New York Magazine. Foreign Policy magazine named the founders of Art+Feminism Leading Global Thinkers. The project is led by artists, art historians, activists, Wikipedians, data scientists, educators, curators, librarians, writers, based in cities across the globe.
