Requests for permissions

This page enables administrators to handle requests for permissions on the English Wikipedia. Administrators are able to modify account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, file mover, extended confirmed, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback, template editor rights and AutoWikiBrowser access.

Editors wishing to request a permission flag here should do so following the procedure below. Editors requesting permissions are advised to periodically revisit the requests page, as notifications will not always be given after a decision is made. Editors should not expect their request to be answered right away and should remember to be patient when filing a request. To find out what permissions your account has, go to Special:Preferences, where your permissions are listed in the user profile tab under "Member of groups".

Requests for permissions are archived regularly; please see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive for an index of past requests.

Permissions

Handled here

  • Account creator (view requests): The account creator flag is granted to users who are active in the request an account process. The flag removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24 hour period. It also allows users to make accounts with names similar to other accounts. The account creator flag is only given to users who participate in the ACC process and may be removed without notice should a user's participation in the account creation process cease.
  • Autopatrolled (view requests): The autopatrolled flag is granted to users who are active in the creation of new articles. This tool is granted so their creations are auto patrolled in Special:NewPages. Unlike other requests, any user may nominate an editor for Autopatrolled, even without that user's consent. A user who wishes to have this flag generally should have created at least 25 articles and must be trusted, experienced, and must have demonstrated they are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially WP:BLP and Wikipedia:Notability.
  • AutoWikiBrowser (view requests): AutoWikiBrowser is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Microsoft Windows, designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. It is essentially a browser that automatically opens up a new page when the last is saved. When set to do so, it suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change. Please read the rules of use and registration requirements on the main page before requesting permission. This is not a true user right, but access needs to be granted by administrators just like other permissions. If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage. Users with under 250 non-automated mainspace edits or 500 total mainspace edits are rarely approved. You will need to give a reason for wanting AWB access.
  • Confirmed (view requests): The confirmed flag may be granted to new users who have not yet hit the threshold for autoconfirmed status. These are users who have not had both 10 edits and 4 days experience. People with this flag can upload files and edit semi-protected pages before hitting the autoconfirmed flag. Users requesting this flag must indicate clearly why they should be exempted from the customary confirmation period.
  • Event coordinator (view requests): The event coordinator user right allows editors to create multiple new accounts, and to temporarily confirm accounts so that they can create new articles.
  • Extended confirmed (view requests): The extended confirmed flag is normally automatically added to accounts after 500 edits and 30 days, but may be added to legitimate alternate accounts of users that already have this access. The flag allows users to edit pages under extended confirmed protection.
  • File mover (view requests): The file mover user right is intended to allow users experienced in working with files to rename them, subject to policy, with the ease that autoconfirmed users already enjoy when renaming Wikipedia articles.
  • Mass message sender (view requests): Mass message sender enables users to send messages to multiple users at once. This flag is given to users who have made requests for delivery in the past, clearly showing an understanding of the guidance for use.
  • New page reviewer (view requests): The new page reviewer user right allows users to mark pages as patrolled and use the page curation toolbar. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Page mover (view requests): The page mover user right allows users experienced in working with article names to move them, subject to policy, without leaving behind a redirect. They may also move all subpages when moving the parent page(s). General guidelines include making 3,000 edits and 6 months of editing history. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Pending changes reviewer (view requests): The reviewer flag is granted to users who are experienced enough with Wikipedia editing and its policies for contributing to the process of reviewing articles placed under pending changes.
  • Rollback (view requests): Rollback enables users to remove vandalism much more quickly and efficiently than by undoing it. Users who do not demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes capable vandalism fighting, either because they have no or little history of doing so, or show a poor ability to discern between good and bad faith edits will not be granted this right. Also, it is unlikely that editors with under 200 mainspace edits will have their request granted. For a more detailed explanation of rollback and information about when it is appropriate to use the tool, see Wikipedia:Rollback. For information about the technical details of the feature, see here.
  • Template editor (view requests): The template editor flag allows users to edit protected templates and Lua modules. General guidelines for granting include making at least 1,000 edits overall (with at least 150 to templates or modules), being a registered user for over a year, and having a record of successfully proposing significant edits to several protected templates. Users should demonstrate proficiency with template syntax and an understanding of the need for caution when editing heavily-used templates.

Handled elsewhere

Several permissions are requested and handled elsewhere:

Removal of permissions

If you wish to have any of your permission flags (except administrator) removed, you should contact an administrator. If you want your administrator flag removed, you should contact a bureaucrat.

This is not the place to request review of another user's rights. If you believe someone's actions merit removal of a permission flag, you should raise your concern at the incidents noticeboard.

The bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight flags are removed at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Stewards will typically not carry out such requests unless they are made on behalf of the Arbitration Committee, by a user who is requesting their own access be removed, or in cases of an emergency.

Process

Requestors

To make a request for a permission, click "add request" next to the appropriate header and fill in the reason for wanting permission.

Any editor may comment on requests for permission.

Administrators

Administrators are permitted to grant account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, event coordinator, file mover, mass message sender, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback and template editor flags to any user who meets the criteria explained above and can be trusted not to abuse the tool(s). Administrators may either grant these permissions permanently or temporarily. For convenience, a bot will automatically comment with relevant data if the user does not meet configurable qualifications. Even if the bot does not comment, administrators should review the user's contributions and logs to ensure the tools will be used appropriately and check for any indication of potential misuse.

Once an administrator has granted a permission or decided to deny a request, they should add {{done}} or {{not done}} respectively under the request with their comments. If a user already has the requested permission, or is autoconfirmed and requesting confirmed, {{already done}} should be used. N hours after the last comment was made (as specified by the config), the request will be archived automatically: approved requests will be placed here; declined requests will go here. See User:MusikBot/PermClerk#Archiving for more information on archiving functionality.

I have created around 50 articles. I am requesting autopatrolled rights so that new page reviewers doesn't have to spend time to review my pages. It would make their job a little easy, and they would be able to review other articles, which are actually needed. The NPR always has a huge backlog. Itcouldbepossible Talk 15:08, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Since 45 of those were created in the last two weeks and were mostly quickly-reviewed stubs,  Not done for now. Thank you for thinking of the NPP backlog but we need to see a quite significantly longer track record. Also, unless you're only interested in creating stubs, we need to see long articles that show you're familiar with our content policies. – Joe (talk) 08:02, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot Joe for reviewing my request. Possibly you are right in thinking that I shouldn't have autopatrolled rights at this moment, but just to add, I have developed quite a few drafts extensively, and also a few articles. Some of them are Nayantara (TV series), Harano Sur (TV series) and Gaatchora. If you are talking about creating big articles, then I mostly focus on bengali TV shows, which you might already know from my user page. Those recent stub creations were create articles on the species of some things that which I had read about recently. I am currently being mentored by FormalDude, and you can see the mentorship here and here. I had requested for this right because if I go for creating stub like articles (though not all) in the future again, I don't have to contribute the NPR backlog again. If you have seen my talk page archive, then only once an issue was raised regarding one of my creations, that too a minor one, which is solved now. Would you suggest me when and after meeting what criteria I can reapply again, and the request would get accepted. Thanks again for you kind explanation. Sincerely, Itcouldbepossible Talk 11:38, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Itcouldbepossible, like I said, it's a question of time. Autopatrolled is only useful for editors that regularly create new articles and only safe to give to editors whose creations we can be sure don't need review. You've created a good number of articles, but almost all of them are copy-and-paste stubs created on a single day. Which is fine – but it gives me no an indication of whether you will be a prolific creator in the long term or whether your future creations on different topics are likely to need review. If you want something concrete: wait six months and reapply if you're still creating articles regularly and haven't encountered any problems with them. – Joe (talk) 16:35, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Joe Roe Thanks for you kind kind reply sir. I understand what you said. I thought this might be too early to ask for autopatrolled rights, since I am really new out here. I need to show experience in article creation, and gain trust from the community. Thanks for all your kind help. I will prepare myself in the meanwhile. Sincerely, Itcouldbepossible Talk 02:21, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Prolific new article writer (about 2177 new entries). Have looked through contributions and found few issues. Schierbecker (talk) 09:36, 11 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm... tough one. On the one hand, there are a lot of notifications about deletion nominations and draftifications on his talk page. On the other, very few of these seem to have stuck. Extending AGF, we could assume that the high number of articles he's created is magnifying the normal 'error rate' (on his part and on reviewers'). I've checked his more recent creations and don't see any issues myself. This user also a legitimately "prolific" article creator so granting autopatrolled is going to help the NPP backlog an appreciable amount. So on balance,  Done. Thanks for the suggestion. – Joe (talk) 16:55, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've created 29 articles about Astronomy and my home state of Iowa. None have been deleted. I plan to create quite a few more Astronomy-related articles, and since I'm quite familiar with the notability requirements as well as the layout of such articles, I don't think they need to be patrolled. User created 26 clean articles about folktales, most of them through AfC. As the topic is mostly not a hot one like bios or politics, I think the autopatrol right can be given (there are thousands of articles at AfC). I want to try testing out JWB for the creating pagelists. I also have been thinking about a possible bot to run on AWB, so would like to test some regex stuff. (I mentioned bots, so should probably note that I will NOT be making any automated edits on this account, and if my tests do work I will go through the proper channels at BRFA before running any other account) Happy Editing--IAmChaos 19:57, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've recently started to work on removing duplicate/second short description templates and I just realised that this could potentially be done in a more efficient manner using AWB (at least for the very common case where there are two identical short desc templates). Being doing manually regex for wrong header section (external links instead of references). Already did over two thousands in a couple of weeks (check my contribs), also double checked the results and split the wrong headers into two when they had mixed content (especially on the last 3 years articles). I saw there were no such cases of splitting headers going further back, just normal regex and so there's no use for a manually action anymore, it could be done automatically to quickening these regexs, and looking around i've found the AWB tool, which i've already checked on his manual of use, technical and rules of use, and it seems pretty much what i was looking for. Also i like the step by step process, so i can still double check the results one by one. Cheers Opencross (talk) 16:09, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to do specific tasks in a way that is both automated and supervised (i.e. I review the edits before they are performed), and I think that AWB would be faster to configure than writing a bot task with the same purpose. I am planning on using AutoWikiBrowser to categorize pages gathered from related categories using keywords and data from infoboxes and to tag sourceless/one-source pages with the respectful maintenance tags. Reason for requesting extended confirmed rights I have made 503 edits to the English Wikipedia and my account has existed for a few months. New page reviewer

(view requests)

User:Butlerblog

While I have been registered on Wikipedia for over 10 years, most of my experience has primarily been the last two. During that time, I have gained experience editing some fringe and contentious topics, which has helped hone my skills in recognizing the quality of cited sources, as well as the ability to recognize and deal with vandalism, disruptive editing, and edit warring. I have gained similar experience editing in the WP:BLP space, and the tighter range of requirements there. Last year, as part of my participation in the Television project, I revived the Westerns project, which gave me experience in working with and creating tracking/maintenance categories as well as article assessment. My participation in the Television project led to my gaining experience with AutoWikiBrowser, and I have used that tool to effectively update many of the articles in the project that appear in the various maintenance categories. I would enjoy another way to use my existing experience to further the project's goals. I believe strongly in trying to encourage newer editors in how to properly edit within the principles and guidelines of Wikipedia, because the only way WP grows is if we continue to turn new editors into experienced editors. I am on Wikipedia nearly every day. ButlerBlog (talk) 18:20, 10 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I originally sought a career as a new page reviewer because I wanted to become a more well-rounded editor. At that time, though, I thought I was lacking the skills (my CSDs were G11s and U5s in userspace, I only had one meaningful AfD which was closed soft-delete, and no PRODs). So, I applied at WP:NPPS and came under the training of Atsme for ~20 days, then graduated (located here). Per Atsme's recommendations, I would only like to have this right for a 3 month trial, then request again in September if my patrols were good. • Can you point to any cases in which this has occurred? It looks like you applied for six different permissions over two or three days last month, but I do not see any past requests at WP:RMTR and it appears that nearly all of your previous moves are moving pages out of your userspace. This is troubling given that a number of those previous articles were deleted as promotional. Dekimasuよ! 02:31, 4 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dekimasu. Sorry for delayed reply and thanks for your request to present with those issues. Recently, I wrote an article on Gynaecologist which had been redirected to Gynaecology. Similarly for Preventive and Social medicine, which was twice redirected but was corrected second time. In some articles I saw wrong redirection, hence wanted to correct these cases. Kindly request to permit this access. However, I never wrote articles on promotional basis but unambigiously may be happening in one or two sentences. Requesting the rights as my temporary PM rights expired after 3 months. In the first 2 months, I significantly contributed in the RM space and made a number of closes. So far, I hadn't run into any kind of trouble or disagreements with my moves and closes. As of late, I regularly monitored, "New users moving page out of userspace" tag in which the suppress redirect right was particularly helpful. In May, however, my activity dropped significantly due to my final examinations, which are due to end on 7th June, upon which I intend to return to my past activity levels, and thus need this right. I've been doing what I can to help reduce the backlog on the requested move list, but there are quite a few where I'm unable to move the page owing to a redirect on the target page or other issues and so I'm limited with how much I'm able to help. I've got a lot of experience with requested moves despite not quite having 3000 edits, and I'd be happy for the perms to be temporary while there's such a large backlog if that'd be more acceptable.
