Uploading screenshot of Wikipedia article

I vaguely remember reading that when you upload an image purely for use on a talk page (in this case a screenshot of what an article looks like on my screen), you should upload it locally. I can't find it back, and Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard seems to suggest otherwise, so wonder if anybody can tell what the correct place is to upload this. Femke (talk) 06:49, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If the screenshot is just text, then it should be OK to upload even to Commons; just make sure you follow WP:REUSE and properly attribute original article. You can use c:Template:Own based, but you shouldn't choose a more restrictive license than Wikipedia's standard license. If the screenshot contains copyrighted content (like images) that has been uploaded to Commons under separate licenses for use in the article, you should make sure you attribute each individual image as well. If the screenshot includes non-free content, you probably shouldn't upload it since doing so will make hard to use on talk pages per WP:NFCC#9 and WP:TPG#Non-free images, and Commons won't accept it per c:COM:FAIR. — Marchjuly (talk) 07:04, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion log of articles that are still live

If I go to a deleted article (like Nosh Technologies), I get a nice overview of the times it's been deleted before. How do I get this information when an article is still online? Femke (talk) 06:52, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Go to the history tab and click the "View logs for this page" link at the top. This won't display just the deletions, mind; it'll also show (by default) moves, protections, patrols - basically anything that's been done to the page that isn't an edit or suppression. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 07:01, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Horizontally squished titles on pages with discussion archives

I'm using en.m.wikipedia.org on a 1080px wide phone screen. On some pages with discussion archives - I've observed this on WP:Teahouse and WP:AN - the archives box (Template:Teahouse questions navbox) takes up nearly the full screen width, but the first section header tries really hard to render to the left of it anyway, and I get an unreadable column of one-character-per-line text. WP:ANI, notably, does not do this; I can't tell what it's doing differently, and it looks like the same template as WP:AN.

I doubt just slapping clear: both; on the div in that template is the right solution, since that would also apply to much wider screens where text does fit to the left of it. min-width: some-reasonable-number; on the header might work, but that's not a thing I can poke at as an editor. Thoughts? 3mi1y (talk) 13:22, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, 3mi1y. I suggest scrolling to the very bottom of the page, and selecting the desktop option, which works fine on smartphones. Cullen328 (talk) 15:41, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's an option in cases of extreme breakage, and I do it occasionally. I tried it full time for a while but I do legitimately prefer the mobile UI on phone screens. It would be nice if the custom components used on these pages worked in both, since a nontrivial number of people do use the mobile site. 3mi1y (talk) 18:27, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My edit

I edited your page on ‘Ganges’, as the river is NOT called Ganges. It’s only and real and true name is: Ganga. I changed it to Ganga, but you have reverted the change back to Ganges. It’s my humble request to please change the name to Ganga and allow these changes.

Also, it should be added to the history section, that the real name of the river is Ganga; Ganges is not the correct name and was changed to dominate over Indian culture. This is not okay, the true name should be written and the real truth needs to be informed and if you keep reverting it back to the name given by colonisers, the reality will not be known. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1AB 111 (talk • contribs) 18:06, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@1AB 111 Hi there! Per the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, it would best to discuss this on the article's talk page: Talk:Ganges. Note that in January, the talk page had its third request to move the article to Ganga, which was not done. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:52, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@1AB 111: Please be aware that English Wikipedia uses the commonly used name of a subject in reliable English sources, and that as a river that is shared by Bangladesh, using Indian English is a weak reason to change it. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 22:08, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Moreover, @1AB 111, nothing is being suppressed: the Indian name Ganga is given in the literal first line of the text, (along with the Bangladesh name Padma), immediately after the English name. No doubt the Hindi Wikipedia does it differently, and no-one would dream of complaining about that. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.209.235.54 (talk) 04:47, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How does the app determine which image will be the banner image on a given page?

I noticed that on upcoming elections pages the mobile banner image shows a flag or seal from the municipality for the election, but some will just show one of the candidates portraits. This is confusing as it might lead you to believe that this candidate has already won or that they are the focus of the article. Is there a way to "tag" an image as the banner image? Or is how the mobile app works kind of a mystery? — Preceding unsigned comment added by XHeliotrope (talk • contribs) 22:11, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I looked for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/tel: (with the colon at the end), i.e. [[tel:]], and found that it redirected to Uniform Resource Identifier. I then wanted the related thing for sending emails, but I thought it was "mail" rather than "mailto", so I went to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/mail: (with the colon at the end), i.e. mail:, and ended up at https://lists.wikimedia.org/postorius/lists/.lists.wikimedia.org, which deals with Wikipedia mailing lists, not an article about URI syntax. Is there a full list of [item]: titles that take you somewhere else? WP:NC-COLON only mentions links to other Wikimedia wikis, like dk: and C:, not a completely different kind of website institutionally related to Wikipedia. 49.198.51.54 (talk) 00:38, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not that I would likely be able to give an informed answer anyway, but what specific "rights" and "review and approval" process are you referencing? If it's unclear to me (a regular editor for over 15 years), it may be unclear to anyone else.
I see from your User Logs that you were automatically updated to extended confirmed user on 12 May 2022, and I know that "promotion" to user levels higher than that depend on assessment by (human, volunteer, fallible) admins and may not necessarily work on a strict queue basis, but on what is less or more straightforward to assess. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.209.235.54 (talk) 05:06, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Cherrell410: You made the request less than two days ago, there is no "line" you're waiting in, and there is no requirement for any administrator to work through the list in order. There are also no WP:DEADLINES on Wikipedia. Be patient.
Note that an administrator may want to see more WP:AFD experience before granting you the new page reviewer right, particularly since you have created several new articles that have been deleted, suggesting a non-readiness for the right to review new pages. ~Anachronist (talk) 05:14, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question regarding when not to cite

I added a citation to a movie article backing up a statement about a prequel being released, and my edit got reverted. The reason given was something about the sentence including a wikilink to the prequel's article.

I have no issue with the revert being done, I'm just a tad confused as I was unaware there was situations where citations aren't needed. I've read WP:WHENNOTCITE but it's a bit vague and doesn't seem to address this particular issue.

So were they right to revert it? I'm asking on here rather than the editor's talk page as I want to see what the general consensus about this is, if there even is any.

Again I mean no disrespect, I'm just a confused Wikipedian. KaraLG84 (talk) 08:52, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There's a general prohibition against using wikilinks as actual citations to corroborate a fact, because Wikipedia is not a reliable source! (Was the revertion by a bot? They sometimes get things wrong.) However, (a) it seems to me likely to be appropriate to mention the prequel, and wikilink that mention to the prequel's article, and (b) the prequel's article must surely itself have a citation to a reliable source concerning its release, which could also be used in the article in question.
Yes, it may seem a little pedantic to require a full in-article Reliable source citation instead of a quick and dirty easy wikilink to another article that (presumably) contains that citation somewhere, but the shortcut is deprecated, in part because future edits to (or conceivably even a deletion of) a linked article might render it unhelpful. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.209.235.54 (talk) 09:17, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, this is what I thought. KaraLG84 (talk) 09:50, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

KaraLG84 You didn't ping me to this discussion or leave a message until today. You reverted my edit without any comment in the summary or take the discussion to article's talk page. Whilst I'm not expecting politeness, I do expect you to follow Wikipedia etiquette. Your edit appeared to be confrontational and you also appear to have tried to build a consensus against my edit without my knowledge or allow me to reply until now. That means there is no consensus.

The new film's not out until the end of next year therefore my inclination is to remove the sentence altogether until the release. An example of another film that does not have citations in the lead, regarding prequels, sequels and spin-offs etc, is Alien. A precedent has been set there. I think the wikilink is enough as there are numerous citations in the new film's main article. The 1971 film article is not s BLP or controversial and citing everything is a bit WP:BLUESKY tbh.

However, if you're determined to have a citation then create a section in the article and add a line for the new film, similar to the 2005 adaptation, and place your citation there. The lead doesn't require citations if they are within the body of an article WP:LEADCITE. --GloMonsterTalk 18:24, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

GloMonster Your edit appeared to be confrontational and you also appear to have tried to build a consensus against my edit without my knowledge or allow me to reply until now is entirely overblown. Kara posted here, at a help desk, and then left you a message after other people gave her a second opinion. That's well within the norm of how this desk is used. Accusing her of "trying to build a consensus against your edit without your knowledge" both goes against the spirit of WP:AGF and doesn't seem...likely, especially when she did in fact leave you a message directing you here. While it's good to invite all editors involved, your presence is also not required to reach a consensus.
As regards the actual content here, the existence of a sequel is not BLUESKY in the slightest and should have a citation somewhere on the page. That said, I also agree with you that the best option here is for some text about the new movie to be added to the 2005 adaptation section, possibly with a section rename at the same time, and then there's no need to cite the statement in the lede. Wikipedia takes copyright law seriously. You copied material from https://www.metavethics.com/, which states "© 2022 MZ. All rights reserved." So your copying was in breach of copyright law, and was deleted.
You claim to be the owner of metavethics.com, but you haven't proved it. Anyone could make that claim. If you are the owner, and you want the material there to be usable in Wikipedia, the easiest way would be to replace that copyright message by one allowing copying of the material there. Maproom (talk) 12:28, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Zamatt: You did not violate copyright law, since you copied your own work. However, you violated Wikipedia policy, because we refuse to accept material that is copied from a publication (your web site) that does not provide a compatible copyright license. This policy exists to protect us against claims of copyright infringement, and to protect the copyright holder (you) from inadvertently providing the material to the whole world under a permissive license by re-publishing it here under CC-BY-SA. If you wish to publish under CC-BY-SA, then do that on your own web site, and then (if it it otherwise suitable) copy it here. -Arch dude (talk) 13:24, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Super ninja2, you mean, like <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/excellent_style.css" />? It has to go within <head> </head>, so Mediawiki markup won't do it. I'm unfamiliar with Javascript; but even if this can in principle accomplish such a feat, I'm pretty sure that it's prevented from doing so on this website. What do you actually want to achieve with this? -- Hoary (talk) 23:34, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Super ninja2 What are you trying to do? You seem to be copying and pasting all kinds of non-css stuff into all kinds of css pages? If you want to load a stylesheet from another website for personal use you have two main options.
In User:Super ninja2/common.js use mw.loader.load to load a stylesheet, like this:
mw.loader.load( 'https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=User:Example/custom-foo.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css', 'text/css' );
In User:Super ninja2/common.css use import url to load the stylesheet like so:
 @import  url ( 'https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=User:Example/custom-foo.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css' );
If you're trying to style content on a page then you can use a limited subset of CSS elements inline and by using templatestyles. 192.76.8.78 (talk) 23:54, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, would it be possible for a more experienced editor to check the recent edits on Kamahl Santamaria? He's been in the NZ media a lot recently with news outlets circulating allegations of sexual harassment. Someone added sourced content on these allegations and they were deleted by a random user whose only contribution to Wiki seems to have been this deletion. The deletion might have been justified--I don't know--but thought it would be good if someone else could have a look at it. Thanks Cameron.coombe (talk) 07:01, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is more on topic at Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard. Also, this edit is problematic because it comes very close to violating no legal threats.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:21, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll head over there Cameron.coombe (talk) 12:17, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalization of the article "The" in musical band names

Hello,

I recently came across the Wikipedia page for "Emo", a style of music: [1], and I noticed in the very first paragraph that the article "the" is not capitalized for the bands "The Promise Ring" and "The Get Up Kids". I have made edits to capitalize the article "the", but it keeps getting reverted by user @Issan Sumisu. I have provided multiple explanations as to why I believe my edit is correct; however, this does not satisfy user @Issan Sumisu. Is it possible to get someone outside the two of us, who could resolve this editing dispute?

My sources for the edits include:

1) The band names were also made as links to their Wikipedia article pages, and thus, are titles of not just the band name, but also their respective Wikipedia article pages. If the band names were not made in to links, this could be analyzed differently.

2) The same Wikipedia page for "Emo" in the subsection "Fashion and subculture" - [2] - provides a list of band names with the article "the" capitalized, such as "The Used", "The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus", and "The All-American Rejects". Therefore, capitalizing the article "the" in the beginning of the "Emo" Wikipedia article provides a manner of consistency.

3) In the Wikipedia "Naming Conventions" page: [3], the article "the" in the band names can definitely fit the category of "definite article", as explained in section "Names of groups, sports teams and companies".

4) The official Twitter page for "The Promise Ring" - [4] - shows in the Twitter page description, that the band also considers the article "the" a definite article, and thus, capitalizes it: "The official twitter feed of the band, The Promise Ring."

Ace theMaster, Issan Sumisu quoted MOS:THEMUSIC, which says
"Mid-sentence, per the MoS main page, the word the should in general not be capitalized in continuous prose, e.g.:
If you disagree I would suggest starting a discussion on the article talk page, rather than explaining your position via edit summaries. TSventon (talk) 11:24, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello TSventon - I have done as you have suggested and started a discussion on the article talk page. As to your comment about "explaining [my] position via edit summaries", I would think that when one makes edits, it is good practice to provide solid references as to why I was making the edit to improve the article page in its entirety, and that is what I have done. Ace theMaster (talk) 14:51, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
One more thing, referencing the same MOS:THEMUSIC, it also says:
However, the, a, or an should be capitalized mid-sentence when it begins the title (or subtitle) of an album or other artwork:
Where the article "The" in the artist "The Wiz" is left capitalized. Ace theMaster (talk) 14:54, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ace theMaster, I meant to suggest that you start a discussion on the article talk page, as you have done, rather than just explaining your position via edit summaries. The optional Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle suggests starting a talk page discussion when you are reverted, rather re-reverting to your version.
By the way, in MOS:THEMUSIC, The Wiz seems to be a musical. TSventon (talk) 15:27, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
TSventon - Hmm, you are correct. "The Wiz" is a musical. Ace theMaster (talk) 15:39, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
TSventon - I looked back at the discussion that I started on the Emo talk page, but it has been completely removed by a different user who also reverted my edits on that article page: @Binksternet. I would think that other users who have same opinion as me would benefit from seeing that a discussion was previously started and take note of the actions taken afterward. Therefore, I feel that @Binksternet is starting unjustified pressure to silence me. I would like to properly escalate this issue within the Wikipedia community. Could you provide a recommendation on how I would do so? Ace theMaster (talk) 05:01, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Change style of one user page

Is it possible to change the style of one user page using CSS and/or JS and make it visible to everyone? And is it possible to import the script/stylesheet/style from external website/source? I'm trying to change the font in my user page's content using Google fonts. Thanks! Shorouq★The★Super★ninja2 (talk) 12:13, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Super ninja2 First of all, please don't ask questions both here and at the teahouse, it just wastes time because you'll get two sets of responses. You can use a limited subset of CSS in wikitext, see Help:HTML in wikitext and Help:Cascading Style Sheets for the details. You can also have an admin create a sanitised CSS page for you at something like User:Super ninja2/styles.css (normal css pages won't work) then use WP:TemplateStyles to load that onto your user page. The elements you can use when creating css to display to other users are limited to remove most of the stuff that could be potentially dangerous, e.g. you cannot use the url function to load stuff from other sites.
There is no way for users to get other people to load arbitrary javascript for security reasons. The only kinds of javascript that are executed for everyone are the contents of mediawiki:common.js and default gadgets, editing these pages is limited to interface administrators. 192.76.8.78 (talk) 15:45, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Super ninja2 Also, to add onto that answer, under WMF rules even in situations where it's possible, like sitewide mediawiki:common.js and gadgets, you cannot load content from third parties like google without the explicit user consent for privacy reasons. Loading fonts from google sends some of the information about users viewing content to them, such as IP addreses. 192.76.8.78 (talk) 16:05, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Add more than 1 image to historical sites

Hi,

Any tips on how to add more than 1 image to the photos I have been uploading to Vancouver Historical site ? (link below ).

I see some of the historical places have the "more image" link on them ( eg Former Vancouver Law Courts ) , so wondering how to add this feature ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_historic_places_in_Vancouver

thanks for any advice !

Mpeel (talk) 18:10, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

From what I can tell, it's done like this: the table on that page includes a field for the Wikidata object corresponding to that location. On the Wikidata page, there's a link to a corresponding category on Commons.
To do this yourself, you'd thus need to:
  1. Find the location on Wikidata, and add the reference to that page, to the table here on Wikipedia (you can look at the Law Courts entry to see how it's done)
  2. Search on Commons to see if there's a category for pictures of that building. If not you'd need to create one. Add your pictures on Commons to this category.
  3. Link to this category on the Wikidata page.
Let me know if you have any problems or further questions. ;; Maddy ♥︎(they/she)♥︎ :: talk  18:32, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mpeel To add a "more images" link to an item on one of those entries there are two things you need to do. Firstly you need to go to our sister project commons (commons:) where you have been uploading the images and you need to create a category for the building. For the vancouver art gallery, for example, the category is c:Category:Vancouver Art Gallery. Next you need to add your images to the correct category by adding a link to the category to the page. To add an image to the Vancouver Art Gallery category, for example, you would add [[Category:Vancouver Art Gallery]]. These categories are typically added at the bottom of the file page. Finally you come back to the English wikipedia and you link the row in the article to the new category you created. If you edit the article you should see a repeating pattern of {{HPC row followed by a load of parameters. Find the row that corresponds with the landmark you want to add a link to then add the following line |commonscat=Vancouver Art Gallery, where you replace the stuff after the equals sign with the name of the category you just created. 192.76.8.78 (talk) 18:32, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Discussing move to different name after closed move request

There was recently a discussion on moving Gay pride to LGBT pride. This was closed as not moved. However, several commenters in the discussion supported moving the article to Pride (LGBT) instead. If I wanted to re-open discussion on this option, should I use Move Review, or just open a new move request? ;; Maddy ♥︎(they/she)♥︎ :: talk  18:13, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You can just open a new move request. Move review is for when you believe the close was incorrect. Femke (talk) 18:35, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Move review is for when you want to contest the closure of a move discussion (i.e. you think the outcome of not moved is wrong), if you want to propose moving the article to a different title the thing to do is to open a new requested move discussion. The closure of that previous discussion is awful and confusing though, I don't know why they included a reference to move review there, the outcome is obvious. If they felt so unsure about their close that they felt the need to tell people where to go to contest it they probably shouldn't have closed the discussion in the first place. 192.76.8.78 (talk) 18:41, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Lemma

The lemma should be Delius (surname) since the page is not a disambiguation page. --158.181.68.50 (talk) 19:30, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Moved. For future cases, you should use Wikipedia:Requested moves, specifically the section for uncontroversial technical moves. ;; Maddy ♥︎(they/she)♥︎ :: talk  19:38, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You start by looking for sources to base the article off of. No sources, no article. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 22:30, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there! Creating a new article is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia, especially if you do not have a lot of experience editing Wikipedia. To learn how to edit, you could view Help:Introduction and The Wikipedia Adventure. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. Once you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of the subject, and determine whether it meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you could follow the instructions at Help:Your first article, and be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting, rejections, and rewrites, before an article is created. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 02:18, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

GA

Hello. I am currently working on the 2022 GA nominations backlog drive, and I just finished an article, that passed. Will someone else end up looking at it or will it just be passed? The article is Noah Syndergaard. Cherrell410 (talk) 02:15, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Cherrell410 It's the first article I've noticed that has both Category:Short description matches Wikidata AND Category:Short description is different from Wikidata. I don't understand how both of these can be correct. GoingBatty (talk) 02:24, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea what that means Cherrell410 (talk) 02:50, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Does the infobox in that article transclude a SD? Even then I would think the :d check wouldn't check the overridden sd. Happy Editing--IAmChaos 05:22, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple images template

Hello! I attempted to add two images to the Sauk City page using the 'Multiple Images' template, but I'm getting markup text above the images and I don't know why. I would greatly appreciate any help! To be clear, I am attempting to insert two images side-by-side with a shared footer. Thanks!

EDIT: The images I have inserted are the pictures of the original Culver's location, in the economy section toward the bottom of the page. --Stephanos100 (talk) 05:59, 1 June 2022 (UTC) Stephanos100[reply]
