ANI templates

I know that if (hypothetically) I want to send someone to ANI, I must notify them. However, do I have to use {{ANI-notice}} to do so, or can I just leave a message to the same effect? Also, does the notification have to be served manually (or with Twinkle), or can other tools be used to deliver it? Thank you. NotReallySoroka (talk) 04:58, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@NotReallySoroka: The notice template is the easiest way, but manually writing out a message also works. As I don't use automated tools I can't speak as to whether they're options. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 05:14, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rendering issue in equations

The article Equality (mathematics) has an equation near the beginning which appears as

Rendering issue

I believe the character that looks like a plus with the right-hand bar missing is a mis rendered + sign. -- Q Chris (talk) 08:05, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please name your browser when you report rendering issues. Chrome has had issues with missing horizontal lines in formulas at some zoom levels. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:55, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
At all zoom levels from 500% to 25%, all +s are still +s in my browser (Chrome desktop). Bazza (talk) 19:49, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It also misrenders on my Chrome browser, but only at 100%. Replacing the + character doesn't do anything. If I add another +, the new one renders fine, but the old one still misrenders. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 20:03, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm seeing this problem as well, using Chrome Version 101.0.4951.64 (Official Build) (x86_64) for Mac OS. It manifests for me as a missing bar in the + character in the "Identities" section, as well as two places in which the lower-right curl of the "x" character is missing. It looks like a regression, a re-emergence of a bug that was reportedly fixed. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:18, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see the same behaviour as User:Timtempleton does in the latest Chome version (102.0.5005.63, Windows 10). There's actually a very faint grey line to the right of the vertical bar, which I suspect is due to erroneous anti-aliasing. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 08:53, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

0mtwb9gd5wx (talk) 15:09, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@0mtwb9gd5wx: The copyright is owned by the Austrian police. Unless you can find an explicit license in writing, then by copyright law you have no license to use that photograph and it is unacceptable for use on Wikipedia. -Arch dude (talk) 15:48, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Is not Austrian government work PD like USA ? 0mtwb9gd5wx (talk) 17:01, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not that I know of. You will need to research this yourself. You may get help at Wikipedia talk:Copyrights. In teh US, Federal-level agencies' work was all placed into the public domain by an act of congress, but that is not a general rule for all governments at all levels. -Arch dude (talk) 17:11, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, 0mtwb9gd5wx. If Getty Images is involved, then it is highly unlikely that the image can be used on Wikipedia. See WP:GETTY. Cullen328 (talk) 17:27, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not necessarily; Getty is notorious for trying to claim rights they do not have on images. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:21, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but you may have to fight with Getty to get that cleared up. Maybe the Austrian police are using Getty for relicensing. I see lots of images in magazines attributed to <something>/Corbis, and I think Corbis is similar to Getty. Copyright is a mess. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 06:04, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not have profiles, not a single one- Wikipedia has articles. Please first review WP:COI and WP:PAID for information on required formal disclosures. You should propose corrections, preferably sourced to independent reliable sources on the article talk page in the form of an edit request(click for instructions). 331dot (talk) 15:18, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Do you see the wrong information on a page here at wikipedia.org or only at an external search engine like google.com? If it's the latter then the problem isn't with Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk)

Removing extraneous length of template

I wrote a template for my user page (see User:Capsulecap/Accounts). Everything seems to be fine, except for the extraneous length. I believe the items hidden by the #if parser functions when not included are contributing to the problem. Is there any wikicode or CSS I can add to fix this? Capsulecap (talk • contribs) 21:46, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it by using non-breaking spaces. There is still extraneous space there but it has to do with the second div element. I can mess with that later. Capsulecap (talk • contribs) 22:22, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mr Reading Turtle Wikipedia tends to discourage any moving or flashing items. It interferes with too many readers' ability to enjoy the content. That being said, I think you can do whatever you want on your personal user page. You can also ask for talk page advice before adding any flashing images to any articles. That being said, I don't know how to make a template flash, but here are editors who help make infoboxes. They may know. The easiest thing to do would probably be to upload an animated file as a gif or something. There are ways of making things flash in CSS/Javascript but they are generally either poorly supported or would require edits to common.js/CSS which would almost certainly be denied. 192.76.8.78 (talk) 00:32, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

English Translation of Lyrics Formatting

Hello! I've been having trouble with formatting my article Saetaryeong to include an English version of the lyrics next to the Korean version with Hanja. Any tips or suggestions? I used <poem> to format it. Arirang has a nice example of what I'm looking for, but I tried experimenting with the code they used, but it ultimately failed. Its slightly problematic that I have an audio file within the lyrics section, but I'd like to keep it that way. I'm also having trouble putting citations into the <poem> but that's a different problem.

Thanks a bunch! Haiiya (talk) 04:00, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Haiiya, "The song uses onomatopoeia" and yes, even to the non-speaker of Korean (e.g. me) at one point (르르르르르) this is particularly obvious. But it's pretty much lost to non-speakers unless you also provide a transcription. Actually it's not clear to me why you have the original in hangul/hanja, in that anyone who can read and benefit from this could get it from a Korean-language page (perhaps the Korean-language Wikipedia article on this). ¶ So I'd think hard about what's best for this article before worrying about how to achieve it. When you do know what you want for the poem, try it out in your sandbox and perhaps invite people there; when you (singular/plural) have got something good, copy it into the article. ¶ Meanwhile, outside this poem but within the article you have a lot of Korean and Sino-Korean words that convention says should be italicized. Some of them could beneficially be linked as well. -- Hoary (talk) 06:31, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary Well, I'd argue that having a Korean language version within the article is important (check Arirang), but I don't know how to insert the english translation version without ruining the format of the article Haiiya (talk) 12:03, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Haiiya:, perhaps this will help you with table formatting: Help:Introduction to tables with Wiki Markup. CodeTalker (talk) 17:18, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to add a photo with email permission of the author & copyright owner

The photo in question is an author photo. I wrote her asking if she had one we could use on her wikibio page and she sent me one. Now I just need to figure out how to upload & license it. I dimly recall WP/Commons maintains an archive of permission emails, but I'll be darned if I can find it. Help? --Pete Tillman (talk) 05:41, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Before you go further, Pete Tillman, has the author of the photograph either (i) explicitly copylefted it in accordance with one or other of the (highly permissive) licenses acceptable to Wikimedia Commons, or (ii) explicitly waived all rights to it and thereby donated it to the public domain? If not, it's unusable. If (i) or (ii) applies, then go to Wikimedia Commons, follow the prompts, and answer honestly. (Unlike the very many people who seem to think "I can't be bothered to read all this legalistic mumbo-jumbo, so I'll just pretend that it's my 'own work'" -- and who thereby both violate copyright and waste other people's time.) -- Hoary (talk) 06:37, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It depends on who took the photo. People often don't realise that with wedding photos and portraits, the photographer who took the photo retains the copyright. You can contact the Volunteer Response Team (formerly OTRS) to discuss donating this file to Wikipedia or Commons. However, the file should not be non-free, as it is unlikely to be suitable.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 06:39, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that this is a photograph of a living person. If the file is non-free, it cannot be suitable. -- Hoary (talk) 07:00, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In theory, you could ask the photographer to release the copyright so that it could be donated to Wikimedia Commons. But the usual advice is to take the photo yourself, or get someone else to take a photo of you. Then it can be CC licensed and uploaded to Commons without any problems.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:17, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
One additional thing to remember. If you freely license it, anyone could use it pretty much anywhere. Make sure you understand what type of CC license you are agreeing to and how others can use it without needing your approval. - X201 (talk) 08:14, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for suggestions & comments. This is a writer, and here is her page: Premee Mohamed. She just won a major literary award (book now on Mt. TBR), I looked at her page for info, noticed no photo & dropped her a line. She sent a (fairly) recent selfie of herself. So, how does she license it with one of our acceptable free licenses, so I can post it to Commons & add it to her page? The last time I tried to do this, we had some sort of email archive & verification program. It was pretty klutzy -- to the point that the author, who had offered her photo for a different book, gave up and went away. So, what now? As I say, she is willing to donate a properly-licensed photo of herself. How do I do that? --Pete Tillman (talk) 18:40, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
PS: the earlier instance I mentioned was for Anne Hillerman, a personal acquaintance (I knew her Dad slightly also). She now has an author photo, provided by a 3rd party from (IB) a book talk. --Pete Tillman (talk) 18:49, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Pete. If she holds the copyright in the photo (which she will not unless it's a selfie, or she has an agreement with the photographer that specifically assigns her the copyright) then she may license it suitably. The easiest way is for her to create an account and upload it to Wikipedia Commons herself. More fiddly, but possible, is for her to send an email according to Donating copyright materials. If she does not hold the copyright, then her permission is irrelevant, and the copyright owner would need to do one of those things. ColinFine (talk) 21:33, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Tillman Right, if she has not done either of the two things that Hoary said, then she has to submit the image to WP (assuming she does hold the copyright); you cannot submit it for her. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 06:11, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Vis-a-vis

Is “vis-a-vis” an acceptable term to use in a section heading? As for example: “Renting vis-a-vis buying”? --ChetvornoTALK 18:16, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't “Renting vs. buying” be better? --Pete Tillman (talk) 18:43, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"Renting vis-à-vis buying doesn't make sense [https://www.lexico.com/definition/vis-a-vis]. If you means "renting compared to buying", then say that. Bazza (talk) 18:48, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That was just an example I made up. The actual use was questioning was Television antenna#Analogue vis-a-vis digital. My question was: do the style guidelines approve the use of Latin phrases like this? Particularly in section headings? I would think some readers wouldn’t understand them. 19:44, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
"Vis-à-vis" is not Latin, it's French. And "Analogue vis-a-vis digital" doesn't make sense, any more than "Renting vis-a-vis buying". Using French phrases, that people won't understand because they've been misused, is so clearly not a good idea that I don't know why you'd need guidelines. Does Wikipedia's policy against meatpuppetry also apply to inactive debates?

WP:MEAT states that one should not recruit people from outside Wikipedia to add undue weight to a debate that is going on. However, what if the discussion has been closed for weeks, and almost nobody has actually made edits in support of their viewpoints? Does their support still count even without any action? Yleventa2 (talk) 18:31, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yleventa2, you seem to be proposing to ignore the rule against meatpuppetry, so as to get the meatpuppets to add their views to a closed debate. That would seem a really perverse thing to do. You'd be breaking two rules, with no hope of achieving anything. Maybe I've misunderstood you? Maproom (talk) 20:55, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it does, and even if it didn't closed debates are not up for further debate anyways; editing them would be considered vandalism. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 00:21, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think I see what you mean, you would have to start a new debate when the time is right and it's possible Yleventa2 (talk) 14:55, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I presume that "Yes, it does" is answering the question in the section heading, and not one of the other two questions the OP asked? The OP made it harder since the questions go in "different directions". 73.127.147.187 (talk) 07:17, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Synonym Stance

Hi. Recently I've been editing the article ephemerality. Nominally, you may not know that word or the descriptor, ephemeral, however with synonyms such as transient, fleeting and momentary, you probably do. Ephemeral is ostensibly the preferred term by academics and the such however would it be appropriate to still cite material described as any of the above synonyms and relate(/literary change wording to) (the) ephemeral. Or do those synonyms imply a different stance which the article should reflect? DMT Biscuit (talk) 19:53, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's not clear to me that ephemerality is actually about a topic. It reminds me of schooldays, when I'd be asked to write an essay on <whatever>, and just write a few paragraphs each with that word in them. But I'm a scientist. I can manage "about a topic", while "reflecting a stance" is lost on me. Maproom (talk) 20:23, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Purely for interest (not taking a stance regarding any of the above), Ephemera is a thing. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.209.235.54 (talk) 23:21, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I see that "impermanence" has an article as a doctrine of Buddhism. That's close, but maybe not exactly the same as writing about a concept. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 07:27, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is this CC License compatible with ours?

See the license at the bottom of the page at African Journal of Disability. I do quite a lot of editing about disability and use this journal quite a bit. Sometimes it has graphs and other visual elements that could be useful for our articles, can I use them? Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 06:28, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

{{cc-by-4.0}} is one of the Creative Commons licenses accepted per WP:ICT/FL. — Marchjuly (talk) 06:51, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading screenshot of Wikipedia article

I vaguely remember reading that when you upload an image purely for use on a talk page (in this case a screenshot of what an article looks like on my screen), you should upload it locally. I can't find it back, and Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard seems to suggest otherwise, so wonder if anybody can tell what the correct place is to upload this. Femke (talk) 06:49, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If the screenshot is just text, then it should be OK to upload even to Commons; just make sure you follow WP:REUSE and properly attribute original article. You can use c:Template:Own based, but you shouldn't choose a more restrictive license than Wikipedia's standard license. If the screenshot contains copyrighted content (like images) that has been uploaded to Commons under separate licenses for use in the article, you should make sure you attribute each individual image as well. If the screenshot includes non-free content, you probably shouldn't upload it since doing so will make hard to use on talk pages per WP:NFCC#9 and WP:TPG#Non-free images, and Commons won't accept it per c:COM:FAIR. — Marchjuly (talk) 07:04, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion log of articles that are still live

If I go to a deleted article (like Nosh Technologies), I get a nice overview of the times it's been deleted before. How do I get this information when an article is still online? Femke (talk) 06:52, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Go to the history tab and click the "View logs for this page" link at the top. This won't display just the deletions, mind; it'll also show (by default) moves, protections, patrols - basically anything that's been done to the page that isn't an edit or suppression. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 07:01, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Delete user profile

Hello! How can I delete my other user profile which was created before the unification of profiles in Wikipedia? --Zimmy (talk) 07:15, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Zimmy. Accounts can't be deleted because they’re needed for attribution purposes as explained here. A user page, however, may be deleted in certain cases. — Marchjuly (talk) 08:23, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Martineau family

ref number 31. should have the correct publisher and the IBSN defined - I could not do this so any help is appreciated. Thank you 49.198.41.28 (talk) 09:17, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Google Books page linked shows a ISBN (which I've added), but is unclear who the publisher was. What do you want to add? Femke (talk) 09:52, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell from searching the ISBN, the Publisher is called Unbound, and this is an ebook edition which might be designated as Unbound Digital. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.209.235.54 (talk) 12:36, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Added that as well :). (ps. if you make an account, you'll "name" will stay constant, among other advantages). Femke (talk) 12:46, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Re the ps: I know, but for both personal and principled reasons I have chosen not to in the 15+ years I've been editing :-). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.209.235.54 (talk) 13:50, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Horizontally squished titles on pages with discussion archives

I'm using en.m.wikipedia.org on a 1080px wide phone screen. On some pages with discussion archives - I've observed this on WP:Teahouse and WP:AN - the archives box (Template:Teahouse questions navbox) takes up nearly the full screen width, but the first section header tries really hard to render to the left of it anyway, and I get an unreadable column of one-character-per-line text. WP:ANI, notably, does not do this; I can't tell what it's doing differently, and it looks like the same template as WP:AN.

I doubt just slapping clear: both; on the div in that template is the right solution, since that would also apply to much wider screens where text does fit to the left of it. min-width: some-reasonable-number; on the header might work, but that's not a thing I can poke at as an editor. Thoughts? 3mi1y (talk) 13:22, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, 3mi1y. I suggest scrolling to the very bottom of the page, and selecting the desktop option, which works fine on smartphones. Cullen328 (talk) 15:41, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's an option in cases of extreme breakage, and I do it occasionally. I tried it full time for a while but I do legitimately prefer the mobile UI on phone screens. It would be nice if the custom components used on these pages worked in both, since a nontrivial number of people do use the mobile site. 3mi1y (talk) 18:27, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My edit

I edited your page on ‘Ganges’, as the river is NOT called Ganges. It’s only and real and true name is: Ganga. I changed it to Ganga, but you have reverted the change back to Ganges. It’s my humble request to please change the name to Ganga and allow these changes.

Also, it should be added to the history section, that the real name of the river is Ganga; Ganges is not the correct name and was changed to dominate over Indian culture. This is not okay, the true name should be written and the real truth needs to be informed and if you keep reverting it back to the name given by colonisers, the reality will not be known. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1AB 111 (talk • contribs) 18:06, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@1AB 111 Hi there! Per the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, it would best to discuss this on the article's talk page: Talk:Ganges. Note that in January, the talk page had its third request to move the article to Ganga, which was not done. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:52, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! If you're asking to use Wikipedia content on your web site, see Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content. GoingBatty (talk) 18:53, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Robert McFarlin, if you mean that you want to copy text from Wikipedia to your website, read this link about that: Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content. You're in good company, Museum of Modern Art does it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:10, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Topic bans and drafts

It looks like I'm going to be topic banned soon. Months ago I told someone that later on I'd help out with a draft, which lies within the scope of the ban. Do topic bans cover editing drafts?--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 19:32, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Epiphyllumlover: Yes, unless the ban says otherwise. Wikipedia:Banning_policy#Topic_ban says it applies to all pages not just articles. RudolfRed (talk) 19:42, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
