Sparrowhedgerow

@Sparrowhedgerow here - I am trying to talk with Andy but this doesn't seem the right place. If it is then please reply to me and I will continue. Sorry if I am wrong again. Sparrowhedgerow 23 Oct 2021 Sparrowhedgerow (talk) 20:13, 23 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sparrowhedgerow: Right page, but please add new sections at the bottom (where I've moved this). You can use the "add section" (or similar label) tab to do so. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:29, 23 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sparrowhedgerow 2

Hello Andy, @Sparrowhedgerow here again. I want to put the following pictures into Mary's book with the following references attached. Sorry to trouble you again but would you check please that I have the right idea. I have used CC - by - SA - 3.0 and them the name. But for printing in Mary's book should I use GNU license. However, some of those below don't have a GNU license so would that mean I can't use the image.. thanks very much again.

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@Sparrowhedgerow: Some minor modifications:

Note that the licences are "BY-SA" not just "SA", and are prefixed "CC", all written as I have shown. As the URLs are all the same you could just give one instance. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:59, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Andy - that is extremely helpful thanks you. Should I put a url to the image too e.g. for the pictish stone distribution https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pictish_Stone_distribution.jpg; https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en - CC BY-SA 3.0, David Lloyd

I tried to 'talk' to David Lloyd but I can't find him under User talk:david lloyd. How do I communicate with the creators of the images? Is it courtesy to get in touch and thanks them for the use of their work? I am almost finished asking questions - I hope - and I'm sure you hope too. But thanks again for keeping me on the straight and narrow. @Sparrowhedgerow 29/10/21 Sparrowhedgerow (talk) 10:11, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sparrowhedgerow: URLs for the images, in print (as opposed to links from web pages) are nice but not required. There is also no requirement to contact individual photographers, but you might indeed want to let them know, when the work is published, as a courtesy. I've no idea whether David Lloyd has an account here, or how to contact them - you might want to ask User:Catfish Jim and the soapdish, who uploaded that file. It's been my pleasure, Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:46, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sparrowhedgerow again. I notice some of the images have a GNU license - if an image doesn't have a GNU license then can I still use it in Mary's printed book? While I am here again - do you mind if I ask this question? It is about File:Monymusk ReliquaryDSCF6380.jpg - this work is by Johnbod. However a lot of the images of the Monymusk Reliquary have the following notice - "This file was uploaded as part of a partnership between Wikimedia UK and the National Museum of Scotland. This tag does not indicate the copyright status of the attached work. A normal copyright tag is still required. See Commons:Licensing. This work is free and may be used by anyone for any purpose. If you wish to use this content, you do not need to request permission as long as you follow any licensing requirements mentioned on this page. The Wikimedia Foundation has received an e-mail confirming that the copyright holder has approved publication under the terms mentioned on this page. This correspondence has been reviewed by a Volunteer Response Team (VRT) member and stored in our permission archive. The correspondence is available to trusted volunteers as ticket #2019101510006699. If you have questions about the archived correspondence, please use the VRT noticeboard. Ticket link: https://ticket.wikimedia.org/otrs/index.pl?Action=AgentTicketZoom&TicketNumber=2019101510006699" Basically - I am wondering if Johnbod's image is ok if a lot of the other ones are under a partnership between Wikimedia UK and National Museum of Scotland. I'm assuming I can use them too as they say they are free but I'm not sure. NMS charge a lot for copies of images and so I'm wondering why these are free here. They may be less quality but this is good enough for our purposes. Sorry written in a bit of a hurry. Thanks again. @Sparrowhedgerow 29/10/21 Sparrowhedgerow (talk) 15:21, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sparrowhedgerow: Where an image has two (or more) licences, you may choose which to use. the CC image is fine for your purposes. You can use Johnbod's image, regardless of what other images say; and you can use any of the other images, too. NMS have worked with WMUK specifically to make them available to everyone. @Sparrowhedgerow here again. Thank you so much Andy for all your help - you are a star!! It has all been so much appreciated. @Sparrowhedgerow 29/10/21 Sparrowhedgerow (talk) 15:48, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sparrowhedgerow Hopefully the permissions on that file are okay now. If you're going to use it I would prefer that it was used with attribution to David Lloyd... been a while since I was conversant with CC stuff. Catfish Jim and the soapdish (talk) 12:54, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

File:BBC Genome OCR error.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello again Sparrowhedgerow here. I wondered if you would help me with another query - we want to use an image of the Deskford Carnyx. There is a very nice one at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Replica_of_the_Deskford_Carnyx_(9487528587).jpg Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic license. Can we use a 2.0 license image? and do we reference it as I have? There is another image with a 3.0 license - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leichestown_Deskford_carnyx_reconstruction._Museum_of_ScotlandDSCF6323.jpg which I have referenced as - https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en - CC BY-SA 3.0 Johnbod Am I better to use a 3.0 license image. Another query - there was an image with a 4.0 license - can we use them? and again how do we reference it? Thank you as always for your help @Sparrowhedgerow 16/11/21 Sparrowhedgerow (talk) 22:16, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Medea-chart database on old nautical charts

Hi, I’m sending this message to all participants of Commons Wikimaps listed here, so that I can be pretty sure it will get to some of you. I am the Principal Investigator of the ERC funded project Medea-Chart ([1]), hosted by the University of Lisbon, whose scientific objective is the study of the genesis, evolution and use of nautical charts from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. One of the visible outcomes of our project is the Medea-Chart database, aimed at storing and making available information and images of all extant manuscript nautical charts: [2]. Since the images of old maps and charts are now in the public domain and our database is open to all, I’m sure your project could benefit from it. The most obvious way would be to download from there all the images you are interested in, but I imagine you could use the tool for more sophisticated purposes. For now, I invite all of you to go there, browse the database, do geographical searches, read our “Chart of the Week” mini-articles, etc. You don’t even need to register for that. Registration is only required for those interested in downloading high resolution images or producing reports. Best wishes and have fun, Alvesgaspar (talk) 21:20, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Alvesgaspar: Thank you for reaching out to our community in this way.
"download from there all the images you are interested in" It would probably be better, if you are able, for you to upload all of the PD images, with whatever metadata you are able to share under PD or open licence. We have tools that allow bulk uploads in such cases.
It would also be possible to create a Wikidata entry for each chart.
I've worked as a Wikimedian in Residence with other institutions on similar projects, should you require assistance. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:43, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
