Commons Conference project

Hello

I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.

Cheers,

Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 national nominations

@Gnangarra: I'm following up to make sure you have everything you need for your jury to start voting on the photos. I see that your campaign is ready, but round 1 has not been created in montage yet. If you have any question or there is something we can help you with, please ping me. Also, please remember that the deadline for submitting AU's nominations to the international team is October 31, 2017. This is a strict deadline. Thanks! :) --LilyOfTheWest (talk) 18:52, 15 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lily we started over night and will be completed before the deadline. Gnangarra 06:19, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 jury

Hi @Gnangarra: , just by way of introduction, I am the international jury coordinator for Wiki Loves Monuments 2017, so I will be overseeing the international jury process over the coming weeks. I am writing because we have been looking through Montage, and it appears that you are the only person listed on the Australian jury. The competition rules state that local juries must have a minimum of three members, so we are reaching out to you now to get a better understanding of what your situation is and if we can somehow help to rectify the situation, if necessary. I am adding LilyOfTheWest to this conversation for her reference. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you --Nevborg (talk) 21:01, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Montage is just a tool, there is nothing to rectify. first pass eliminates those images that dont meet the basic size, information requirements, copyright, or any other rule criteria some of which montage does the rest I do as its all Wikiverse issues. Then judging is done as a collective sitting in one room by skilled photographers who arent Wikimedians no need to have multiple logins, this year doing a 1 through 5 sort, we then did a review of those rated 4 & 5, sadly there were very few 5s after that those still rated 5 are reviewed creating the final 10. The biggest issue we had was with the tool and not being able to close off rounds to record each step of the process, with the final selections being done external to montage and me just using montage after the event to keep the 10 as a group that can then be extracted by the international jury secondary to that was the ratio of what could be called good images(ones that would pass COM:QIC). Gnangarra 00:03, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Gnangarra: thank you for the clarification. If I understood correctly (and please correct me if I misunderstood), you are saying that the judging was done collectively, with only yourself accessing and logging results in Montage. Could you confirm that there were at least 3 judges forming part of this jury process? May I also ask you to kindly follow the instructions here in order to formally submit your photos? Please let me know if you have any questions or further clarifications. --Nevborg (talk) 10:54, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
done, may I suggest in the future the jury tool get modified to provide this information, or even have a button to submit directly to the International section rather than wasting time with emails Gnangarra 11:24, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Diuris

Hello Gnangarra,

Thanks for your work - especially your plant images. I'm working through the Wikipedia pages of Diuris and have just expanded Diuris carinata. While I do not profess to be an expert, I think your image is of Diuris corymbosa rather than D. carinata. Reason? - colour around the callus. The labellum of D. carinata is mostly yellow except for a red-bown outline around the callus and a blotch nearer the tip. Also, the labellum mid-lobe is longer than the lateral lobes - in your image they appear about the same length. This page has some good images. I think these colours are the reason for the common name "bee orchid". Distribution might help - if your photo was taken well south of Perth it would be more likely to be D. carinata. Great pity if I'm right - it means there is no image on the D. carinata page. I would value your opinion. Gderrin (talk) 23:15, 24 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Gderrin: I never claim to be sufficiently knowledgeable to be positive on ids will happy be corrected. Description says not 100% certain, given it 12 years ago my best guess on it was taken in w:Kings Park which isnt help in that beside being natural bushland it also contains an area dedicated to the different flora found around, we have had id issues with banksias. Given all of that your reasoning is probably right identifying species I rely on Florabase who's information is derived from botanic surveys and collections by specialists. Which beside physical traits also takes into account the soil, location, time of year, and known to have been recorded there for something like diuris I would have just tried matching images and then location. I'll put D. carinata on my list and endeavour to get a photo for you when it flowers. Gnangarra 02:47, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Mate - that's great, thanks. I'll be over later in the year looking out for it (and lots of others) too. All the best to you. Gderrin (talk) 04:06, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WLE Australia 2018

Hi there Gnangarra,

I think I remember seeing something in the WMAU mailing lists that you might need a hand with WLE judging for this year. If you do I'd love to take part. I've contributed a lot of detailed reviews at FPC over the years, and I'm known there, if that counts as relevant qualifications. You can look at User:Thennicke/Featured to see images I've helped promote to FP.

Anyway let me know if you do want that help; I think I'm in a good place to assist. Regards -- Thennicke (talk) 09:29, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Thennicke: yes please more than happy to have the help, just remember you cant judge if you submit images to WLE. Gnangarra 09:34, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Gnangarra: No problem. I have images I could submit but I'm more than happy to upload them outside the competition. Feel free to keep me posted either on my talk page or through email; I check both. Cheers -- Thennicke (talk) 09:41, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Gnangarra. You deleted the file as copyright violation. In my opinion the file is very simple and ineligible for copyright. Do you want to restore the file? Taivo (talk) 07:58, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • I looked at it again, I see more than simple geometry, the images includes colour choices and the specific placement of 3 objects. I would also contest the claim that it could be considered the work of the uploader as it is the original work of the graphic designer in producing a logo for a corporation. I would like to add the uploader has a considerable history of repeatably uploading corporate logos as own work or PD sourced back to LOGOPEDIA where the niceties and respect of copyright is apparently ignored. If the local Wikipedia as fair use then it may be eligible to be uploaded there. Gnangarra 09:31, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open!

POTY barnstar.svg

Dear Gnangarra,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.

In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.

Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.

Perth Stadium images

Hi Gnangarra, JarrahTree suggested contacting you in regards to a question on Perth Stadium images. While there is 188 images in Category:Perth Stadium these all seem to be from the opening. We don't have any of subsequent events there (AFL, Cricket, Soccer, etc.). Do you know whether there is a reason, e.g. copyright law? The stadium website just states that visitors can't take images for commercial purposes, Does Commons fall under that? I have a few pictures from the last Scorchers game but I'm reluctant to upload in case it's a copyright violation of some sort. Do you have any advice? Thank you, Calistemon (talk) 07:42, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Its not a copyright violation, if its a T&C of entry then it can be a civil matter. The question is very difficult as to how the Stadiums lawyer, then the courts would interpret "commercial use", remembering the Commons must allow commercial use. Thats before you consider the media rights issues related to organising body like the ACB, AFL... I would suggest contacting the PR/Media people at the stadium and request permission to upload then lodge that with OTRS system which will provide you with archive of the permissions. Gnangarra 08:28, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Gnangarra, that explain why we just don't have any images at all from events at the stadium and it will probably remain so. I also a few a few AFL pictures and some Wildcat ones from Perth Arena. At this point I will just keep them stacked away and not upload them for the above reason. Interestingly, in the Commons copyright guidance, sporting events aren't mentioned at all. Thanks again for your explanation. Calistemon (talk) 00:58, 28 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Join WMAU and ask them to champion permissions from the stadium for access, and from the national bodies to allow photos from cameras using less than a 100/200mm lens to be able to be released. Gnangarra 08:56, 28 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Tim's Thicket Beach or Tims Thicket Beach

Hi Gnangarra, I noticed you have created Category:Tim's Thicket Beach a few month ago while I have created Category:Tims Thicket Beach just a bit before. Now, I can find evidence for both ways of spelling and really don't know what is the correct one. What do you think? The two categories should really be merged, but to what name? Calistemon (talk) 01:27, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think it has to be like a lottery - could be either - some usages with some without - just needs to be merged and the alternative usage indicated as a header also found as... JarrahTree (talk) 02:30, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

agree its bit of raffle as to which is the correct term, nothing on the public facing free access areas of Landgate says anything about the location. There may be some records in Mandurah about the names origin if anyone is down that way with the time to look. As JT says pick one and go with it leave a redirect at the other, Wikidata and Wikipedia will also need to be adjusted... I'm not fussed about which one gets chosen Gnangarra 03:15, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I'm home again tonight and I will consult my street directory. Whichever spelling it uses I will go with and update the relevant pages. Calistemon (talk) 03:57, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have checked both my street directories at home and both stated Tims Thicket Beach, so I have moved the images there. Calistemon (talk) 11:16, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!

Dear Gnangarra

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC

Hello Gnangarra,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:53, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:CY OConnor beach gnangarra 1.webm. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

  • it was there, maybe if people put more effort into fixing uploading of large files instead of bot that cant recognise license templates this place would be better Gnangarra 13:20, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
