Proposed flags of Norway (1821)

Flag of Norway
Request
Could someone please create SVG files of the above proposals for the flag of Norway from 1821. More information on them can be seen on this page here. Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 17:57, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

Other source images can be found at Forslag til flagg, for year 1821. Those are same images, but with layout paper for color expectation. En rouge (talk) 19:33, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
I think that the second (2nd) proposal can simply be made by taking the flag of the Dominican Republic (or "Santo Domingo") and removing the coat of arms. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 06:39, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

two comments
- 10 doesn't use this strange color, but only yellowed material.
- 14 does not present Scandinavian cross, only a very thick Saint George's Cross

@213.192.68.53: , please, can you give references for your arguments :
  • for 10: yellow rather than olive (as seen in 04 & (ref.1)
but in (ref.1), we can see differences between mast color (yellow-ish) and flag color (olive-ish)... what are your sources?
but I can agree with you, as for #10, I think viewed-black is blue instead, but I have no source...
I think it's the same (blue instead of black) for 6 & 7 (painted source images give me this feeling), as well as 10 perhaps ;
14 seems really be black (but I've got no other source than the given paper painted flags copy)
  • for 14: do you mean the cross is centered ? do you have a source ?
  • and/or other sources ?
  • for lion's tail, what's the problem ?
the main issue can be inward or outward... whatever the painting/display/rendering...
no?
all pictures are lion-ward (i.e. outward), rather than leopard-ward (inward)
so, what do you mean ?

thanks En rouge (talk) 00:17, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

@En rouge: Given the lack of sources (or indeed responses) from the other User, I think it may be best to proceed with adding the extra symbols to the flags in the best way you see fit yourself. If you're still up for it of course? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 18:00, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

request(s)

1 request is a restore of the old version of incorrect flag [7] sources:[8] [9] [10] ✓ Done

2 request is the addition of the Mir standard [11], which also requires an emblem.

I have not found a reliable source with the correct image of the coat of arms, but it was certainly a lion holding flag, with a ribbon on the mast with the word Hunza state and inscription above the flag [12] [13], most likely no formal draft exists.

standard name ,,Flag of Mir of Hunza`` coat of arms name ,,Emblem of Hunza (Kanjut)``

New version of File:Nuvola Nordic flags.svg

Request
Make a new edited version of File:Nuvola Nordic flags.svg Nuvola Nordic flags.svg by replacing its flag of the Faroe Islands Nuvola Faroese flag.svg with the flag of Finland Nuvola Finnish flag.svg, so then it has all five flags of the five Nordic countries.

Not a graphist. Is this not done one purpose to exclude Finland which is culturally different from the other countries? I feel such a request should be to make a new image and not to overwrite the previous one. Veverve (talk) 01:24, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

Yes, that's what I meant with the "new edited version", sorry if the request wasn't clear enough. It can be named something like File:Nuvola Nordic flags v2.svg or File:Nuvola Nordic countries flags.svg. 85.23.79.231 11:13, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

Bump. Is this too hard? If it is, it's a bummer, because only images of the five Nordic flags in one picture are photos that don't work that well as logos in reduced sizes. @Snow Lion Fenian: IMO the source is not really good enough (too small in pixels) to be able to create a great SVG from. @RCraig09: That's perfect, and thanks for doing this. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 14:20, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
@RCraig09:
What is the copyright status of this image? The image is significantly different from the CoA already on Commons.
It appears you vectorized the image on
If that is the case, then the vectorization may be a derivative work of that flag.
That page credits the image as "Flag of Fouesnant - Image by Arnaud Leroy, 20 March 2002".
That page describes the flag as

According to P. Rault (Les drapeaux bretons de 1188 à nos jours [rau98]), the flag of Fouesnant, as reported by Divy Kervella, is a banner of the traditional arms of the city. The arms are dated 1426 and can be blazoned as: Sable, a double-headed eagle argent, langued, beaked and clawed gules.

For meaning of terms, see A Glossary of Terms used in Heraldry.
As I understand it, there is no copyright on a blazon, but there can be copyrights on drawings made from the blazon. Consequently, the flag could use any artistic interpretation of the double-headed eagle.
We need to show that Leroy's 2002 flag has an acceptable license or we cannot use it.
Glrx (talk) 16:12, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
@Glrx: Indeed my SVG is a derivative work of the GIF that Arnaud Leroy uploaded. However, I question whether Leroy's image has the modicum of originality that warrants copyright protection in the first place, especially since his work itself must by definition be a copy or close derivative of a public domain work, and how "crowded" the field of eagle-heraldry already is. But I've already placed calls and emails through Flags of the World to try and contact Leroy for licensing or further info, so let's hold off on any action. —RCraig09 (talk) 18:15, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
@Glrx: Update: I've received word from Flags of the World that Arnaud Leroy has not communicated with them "for many, many years".
- Through further research I've discovered that the historical flag was apparently redrawn ("Redessiné") by Leroy (emblemes.free) as part of a larger project (cyber-flag.net). This history indicates that Leroy merely copied the historical design rather than create his own original design in the manner you seem to describe above. I am trying to contact Leroy through Pascal Vagnat at that project.
- More generally, the more I think about it, I think that choosing a particular feather configuration, beak, and claws is nearly devoid of the originality needed to warrant copyright protection in the first place. (See these Google search results for how crowded the two-headed eagle field is.) —RCraig09 (talk) 19:58, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
- Note also armorialdefrance.fr for the same town--showing both were a close copy of the historical original. —RCraig09 (talk) 20:55, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
@RCraig09:
If you trace an image for Commons, you need to show the original image has a free license. Maybe Leroy executed a CC-BY-SA license. If you can show Leroy faithfully copied a free image, then that should suffice. Without something more, the default assumption is that Leroy created the design in 2002.
"More generally, the more I think about it, I think that choosing a particular feather configuration, beak, and claws is nearly devoid of the originality needed to warrant copyright protection in the first place." That is not the way it works. A double-headed eagle is not a simple shape. If someone copies my design, then it violates my copyright. Someone else independently drawing a design that looks close to my double-headed eagle does not violate my copyright. Hundreds of photographers may take similar pictures of a movie star at a press conference; the similarity of the photographs and near lack of originality in taking photos at a press conference does not remove the images from copyright protection.
Moral rights are another issue.
I do not like bringing up these issues, but Commons and WMF want to respect copyrights.
Glrx (talk) 16:38, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for your explanations, and I understand that the WMF goes above and beyond bare legal minimums. I'm not trying to be argumentative, but in this case it's the "redrawn" ("Redessiné") that's mentioned at the emblemes.free link (above) that makes me think Leroy's is the "faithful reproduction" that you describe.
- I'm continuing to pursue contact with Leroy (if he's still living) or the current copyright holder, but as an aside: is it acceptable for a Wikimedian like me to create my own design from scratch based on a general description, and upload it to Commons? It's a well-intended enterprise but intuitively it might come off as a bit spam-like in a way the Commons would reject. Is there a written governing policy or guideline? —RCraig09 (talk) 22:33, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
@RCraig09:
I do not read "Redessine" as a copy; it may imply much more. Even the English transliteration to "redraw" does not imply a strict copy. If I google the Coat of Arms of Fouesnant, France, I only get a few designs, and Leroy's design is distinguishable from the others. I do not see a similar eagle at en:Double-headed eagle. Leroy may have copied his double-headed eagle, but we do not know that right now.
As I understand, anyone may create an image from the blazon. It is then her image, and if it is above TOO, then it has a copyright.
One could also use a free image to create the work. It would be a derivative work, and the additions or modifications to the composite would have to be above TOO for the derivative to have its own copyright.
Glrx (talk) 17:10, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Glrx I appreciate there is ambiguity in "redessiné", but, further: the cyber-flag.net description declares that "Pascal Vagnat and Arnaud Leroy have endeavored to reproduce the emblems of the municipalities as faithfully as possible in the form of vector drawings, a guarantee of precision and quality." These recitations diminish any claim of originality beyond dutiful copying using a graphics program. Unfortunately, my limited searching shows neither person seems to have been active for ~thirteen years and I haven't been able to contact them re licensure, or to determine actual copyright ownership.
-I haven't been able to find a definitively "original" (out-of-copyright) rendition, outside of possibly being included in a hard-to-find printed book. I'm pondering whether it's more appropriate here to go full-bore {{copyvio}} or to nominate for deletion and see what a consensus shows. What are your thoughts at this point? RCraig09 (talk) 15:25, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
@RCraig09:
Sigh. I wish the origin were clear. At this point, I would vote delete in a DR.
The simple solution is to use File:COA fr Fouesnant.svg by Brieg to make a new version of the image. The new flag would then still hold Brieg's copyright as replacing the background shield with a background flag would be {{PD-shape}}. Once that is uploaded, you could ask an admin to revdel the earlier image as a questionable license.
Glrx (talk) 17:57, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
Glrx I've created and uploaded a Version Two (18 Sept) of the flag based on Brieg's 2007 CoA design. Version Two seems crude compared to Leroy's and others, so in the meantime I'd like to initiate a discussion rather than summarily delete Version One (13 Sept); however, RevDel seems to be geared toward summarily deleting a subsequent version rather than discussing an earlier version. Suggestions? —RCraig09 (talk) 22:15, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

@RCraig09:
For a discussion, open a DR but in the deletion request make sure that that you are only asking to delete the first version (not all versions).
Yes, the original version is much better than the current, but that is also why Leroy deserves a copyright if he drew it himself.

It's like comparing "File:Coat of arms of the Republic of Vietnam (1967-75) (Variant 1).svg" to "File:Coat of arms of the Republic of Vietnam (1963–1975) (Red).svg", the latter would be usable in Wikisource documents where the coat of arms only appears in red like the above. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:13, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Flag of Jaipur

Article: w:Jaipur State

Request
Please correct the colors for darker ones, obtaining such intense colors was impossible in that era and it's darker today too.

- Today's flag looks like this [14] (today Maharaja's family uses a different color arrangement), the appearance of the flag in British times is difficult to determine, but such saturated colors are unbelievable, because they cannot be obtained with natural dyes. There were actually more flags, here in the best quality I have found (flag 1922 - 1946 is wrong, green should be in the middle, others are good).

@Snow Lion Fenian: how's this? I did my best with the colors based on the image you linked me... they can be very easily adjusted if they aren't right, just let me know! Wegates (talk) 16:35, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
@Wegates: Brilliant work, and thanks for taking the time to do this. Much appreciated. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:43, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
@Wegates: , I have recreated the flag from scratch because your version had some issues:
  1. Your chosen flag ratio of 10:19 did not match the ratio of 2:3 used in source image provided by Snow Lion Fenian.
  2. The lower white stripe was thinner than all the other stripes.
  3. The blue bar extended below the bottom edge of the flag. This causes problems for people that want to import one SVG file inside another.
  4. The stars were significantly larger than those on source image.
  5. The stars contained some rotational symmetry errors in spite of being drawn with 17 significant digits.
Let me know if you have questions, or if you want further clarifications about any of my comments above. MapGrid (talk) 04:20, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
@MapGrid: There is a very minor issue, if you look at the 2,560 × 1,707 PNG of the image, zoom in on the borders between white/black and red/white stripes, there will be some greenish color. The same issue can also be found in some of the other flags you made. I think you know why this will happen.--Mike Rohsopht (talk) 05:26, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
@Mike Rohsopht: Interesting. I was aware that there might be a colour bleed problem, but I could never ascertain that it was really there until I looked at the large PNG images in Gimp.
I have uploaded a new file in which the green extends half way under the black and half way under the red. This is similar to how you have handled the red square on the File:Flag of Togo.svg.
In the past, this fix would have just shifted the colour bleed problem to the edge of the flag. Sometimes I have used hidden diagonal lines to avoid painting multiple colours along a single edge of the flag; but that may be unnecessary now. It appears that Librsvg and most of the browsers now have code to eliminate bleeding at the edge of an image... and if this is true, my efforts to often try and paint white before the other colours may be a wasted effort. It used to be that if you looked at File:Flag of the United States.svg which is painted with red before white, there were red hairlines at the left and right edges of the image; those seem to be gone now. @MapGrid: I first notice this problem in File:Flag of Malaysia.svg, which avoided it by having a wider canton. Many flags with cantons and stripes still have this problem, including the current File:Flag of the United States.svg. By the way, you may take a look at the blue/yellow boundary of File:Flag of Seychelles.svg and File:Flag of Seychelles (vertical).svg--Mike Rohsopht (talk) 18:03, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
@Mike Rohsopht: The colour bleed issue on the horizontal and vertical flags of Seychelles was definitely and error on my part; thank you for pointing it out. I have attempted to fix it with two new uploads. MapGrid (talk) 18:01, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

Vector diagrams for linear patterns of the skin

Article(s): en:Langer's lines, en:Blaschko's lines, en:Dermatome (anatomy)

Request
I think it would be nice to have standardized vector images for the three common linear patterns of the skin (i.e., Langer's lines, Blaschko's lines, and dermatomes). This article has diagrams of all three of them, but you may want to look at several images for each because there's some variability between different representations.
As far as the styles of the illustrations, the format of side-by-side anterior and posterior views is the most common.
From a scientific standpoint, one important consideration to remember is that Langer's lines represent a vector field of skin tension, while Blaschko's lines and dermatomes are used to demarcate particular segments of skin. In other words, for Langer's lines, the lines themselves are what's important, while for Blaschko's lines and dermatomes, it's the segments of skin between the lines that are important. This should influence the choice of coloring style. I think it's going to be too complicated to accurately color Langer's lines and I haven't found any images attempting it, so those don't need to be colored. For the other two, the segments should be colored (we don't even technically need lines between them if the contrast between the colors is enough to see the boundaries between the segments, but I'll defer to your judgement on that). The unique thing about Blaschko's lines is that they have a directionality to them, from back to front (i.e., wrapping around from spine to navel), from medial to lateral (shoulders to fingers) and from top to bottom (hips to toes). The image here may show the directionality a bit better for the legs. I'm not sure what the best way to show the directionality of the segments will be, but perhaps shading them so the beginning is more saturated than the end. Dermatomes should be filled with color according to the level of the nerves innervating them, as shown here.
Thanks, and happy to discuss further. --Rob Hurt (talk) 00:10, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

@Rob Hurt: I will really need your help all the way here. So you want three different images each representing different lines; Langer's lines, Blaschko's lines, and dermatomes. So first we will have to find a body illustration that can be used for them all. After that I will check more into each and will for sure have questions. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:10, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

Base bodies

Extended content
@Rob Hurt:
@Goran tek-en: No problem. Yes, let's do three separate images. I think that image is good, but it might be nice to have one with feet pointed down so you can see the top and bottom, and with no hair on the head. There are a few sex differences, but let's use a gender-neutral body for simplicity. Rob Hurt (talk) 18:33, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
@Rob Hurt:
  • Will it not be hard to have gender-neutral body when doing Langer's lines (haven't checked for the others), to my understand they are following the topographic of a body.
  • I have started to make SVG version of this file:Human Body.jpg because I thought we could do both woman and man, I know it's more work but will it not be better?
  • For the feet, do you mean like those two: top, bottom. That will mean the bodys will be like floating in the air. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 21:14, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
@Goran tek-en: I would be ok with doing either both or gender neutral. In all cases, I'm remembering that these don't need to have the accuracy of a medical textbook, but are more for the public to get a general understanding of the concepts. So I would be inclined to air on the side of simplicity and interpretability even at the cost of some accuracy, but that's just my opinion. And yes, floating in the air like here. --Rob Hurt (talk) 21:05, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
@Rob Hurt: Yes, I will not over do it (try to). The image you linked to is that the Langer's lines? --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:32, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
@Goran tek-en: I certainly appreciate the attention to detail, and I think we'll have to decide what compromises to make. In order, these are Langer's lines, dermatomes, and Blaschko's lines. --Rob Hurt (talk) 16:11, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
@Rob Hurt: Before I continue I want to check how you want the bodies to look. One is lines and one is shaded for the volume (I know, too much details.) Tell me which you want or maybe both because ones I have made the bodies and the three different lines it's quite easy to move between the two versions.
@Goran tek-en: I think these look good, and the shaded one perhaps looks a bit more professional, as long as those colors don't end up conflicting with the colors used for the skin lines. I'm in favor of making the illustrations look professional though. Do you have the back of the body too? --Rob Hurt (talk) 17:30, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
@Rob Hurt: Thanks, yes I have back and front back of male also. I will be back when I have done them all (bodies), might take a while. Of course I will see to so the lines will be visible. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 18:12, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

@Rob Hurt: Now I finally have the drafts for the bodies, sorry it took so long.

We now (if those are fine with you) have to decide how you want the bodies:
1 Standing all four in one image, A
2 Standing all four in one image but half-half bodies so they would become two, like the images you linked to at the top
3 Lying female respectively male in each image, C and D
4 3 but as half-half and then we can have them without an offset
5 Or any other version you want
To really see their real sizes you would have to download them and look at them in a software that tells the level of zoom.
I think like this, most screens are in landscape and I try to keep the height of images to a maximum of 1 000 px. The 1 000 px is something I assume many screens can view (in a browser window) without having to scroll, to view the whole image. To be able to view as much details as possible I try to keep to this. It's always a problem as you don't know how an image will be consumed but the main target here is within an article at wikipedia but I always try to make them work as a free standing image which can be used in different places and circumstances, this is of course impossible but I try.
So give me feed back and we discuss how to set them up, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 19:31, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

@Goran tek-en: I think these look great, and my preference is A. You're making these as vector images, right, so we can arbitrarily adjust the scaling at any point? The more I think about it, the more I think that we should also have a gender-neutral version, just in case someone ever wants to use these images in a classroom or a news article. --Rob Hurt (talk) 21:30, 12 November 2021 (UTC)
@Rob Hurt:
  • Sorry for not being clear, it's SVG I work in, the drafts are PNG due to rendering limitations where I show my drafts.
  • So they can be scaled to what ever one wants. But, this is in theory and technically. From a view point line thickness, spaces, relationship of stuff has to be edited when scaling much, both up and down. It's the same as text, a 20 pt (or px or what you use) sentence which is scaled to e.a. 180 pt has to be edited letter by letter (the distance between them) to look good.
  • A gender-neutral version is something we will have to discuss after female, male is completed. I have some reservations and points of opinion there.
  • Could you link me to a few of the best images you know of regarding Langer's lines, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 12:25, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
@Rob Hurt: I have now uploaded the base bodies as a separate file Female-male front-back 3d-shaded human illustration. Could you please check the information on it and especially the credit part with you. Do you want it in any other way just tell me, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:45, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

  • Pictogram voting comment.svg For context, the complicated elements can be found at "File:Flag of Director General of Customs of ROC.svg".Note that flags based on photographs can be nominated for deletion as "user-generated fantasies" as many people here only want files sourced from external places as the "Wikimedia Commons is not a source of educational content" according to some, so any flag based on that photograph may be liable for deletion in the future, at least based on similar deletion requests of Vietnamese political flags based on photographs at political events. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 10:08, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
