File rotation

When this bot rotates jpg files, does it decompress and recompress the image? That is, does it reduce the quality of the image? Perhaps this should be documented on the bot page. --Robert.Allen (talk) 17:52, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

Raison d'une autorisation qui se fait attendre

Bonjour (et bonne année 2016 !) Steinsplitter,

après un mois et demi sans réponse du maire de Lans-en-Vercors, j'ai recontacté son assistante aujourd'hui pour savoir ce qu'il en était de l'autorisation (ou non) à publier File:Lans-en-Vercors. Jacques-Antoine Biboud.JPG.

Il se trouve que débordée par le travail, ma demande ne lui a jamais été transmise. Le mail lui a de nouveau été adressé ce jour avec copie à l'OTRS.

File extension

Could you review & comment on Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Robert Alexandrovich please? I think the uploader is missing the concept of not uploading more of same after being told not own work which he acknowledges and then ignored completely on his next batch of same uploads. Hi Steinsplitter! Ist es möglich, für die Upload-Markierung "Cross-wiki upload from pt.wikipedia.org" einen Filter zu setzen (im Resultat ähnlich wie hier^{(dort ging es um T120867)}? Google indexiert zwar ein paar Bilder (größtenteils erst jetzt getaggte copyvios/etc.) aber ich würde gerne uploads aus meiner Heimatwiki besser scannen wollen. Momentan finde ich ptwiki relevante uploads eher nur zufällig. Vielleicht gibt es auch eine andere Art und Weise, uploads von ptwiki-Benutzer zu filtern... Was meinst Du? Nee, in der englischen Fassung kommt oben in der Box ein "Diese Seite kurz zusammengefasst" auf Deutsch, aber das ist wohl eine Vorlage, die immer in der jeweils eingestellten Sprache kommt und der nachfolgende Text bleibt sinnigerweise auf Englisch. File 2nd nom

Hi Steinsplitter, I don't plan on renominating the file again and again but I was explicitly told here to renominate for a second opinion and as we don't have a DRV I was left with no other choice was I ?....
Also as I said on the second deletion request if someone can actually provide a reason for keeping then I'd be more than happy to withdraw but as it stands there hasn't actually been any reasons for keeping which is why I renominated it,
I appreciate after the first incident you may think "Oh I'm a disruptive editor" but that's not true - Simple fact is I've deleted loads of images like this so you can kinda understand why I'm confused on everyone !!voting Keep on this ,

User:Co9man block?

Hi,

I just noticed that you indefinitely blocked User:Co9man.

Although I was concerned and frustrated that he had been importing Flickr images with little regard to quality (hence the large quantity of auto-generated messages from me on his page), I didn't notice anything deliberately malicious.

Has this user been doing anything inappropriate with these alleged sockpuppet accounts, and does this have any bearing on how his uploads (including those I'm dealing with) should be treated? Ubcule (talk) 23:06, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Wrong years

It is not him that changed the category, but it is his bot. It seems someone requested his bot to perform category moves. It is one of the tasks SteinsplitterBot's doing.

Template:Category redirect

Your pseudo-fix here does not work at all!

In fact you have broken the test of non-empty categories, because the parameter 1 is only a category name (without any namespace) but you test it with "{{NAMESPACE:{{{1}}} }}" which is empty because parameter 1 is NOT a FULL page name.

Revert it, because now we've got ALL non-empty categories not listed in their redirected category were they were (as long as the source category was not empty).

Also the test with "{{PAGESINCAT:{{{1}}}|R}}" still does not work for any category name in parameter 1 that contains (during template expansion) some characters that are HTML-encoded (notably the ASCII apostrophe or ampersand), as it will always return 0 (so even if the redirected source category is not empty, it is not detected):

• Note that this includes any parameter value that were actually not HTML-encoded in the source page using "{{Category redirect|New category name}}", because MediaWiki prematurely HTML-encode them (notably any standalone apostrophes not used for bold/italic styles, or standalone ampersands, as well as standalone lower-than and higher-than signs, or standalone braces) while parsing the page, before expanding templates).
• MediaWiki should have never HTML-encoded these characters during the parsing step, but this is left for compatiblity reason (because there are a few templates using this to detect presence of some restricted characters).
• This is an old unfixed bug of MediaWiki, because PAGEINCAT actually still does not HTML-decode its parameter (and consequently, cannot find any category with the given name, so it returns 0).
• However, PAGESINCAT still ignores that fact and should have been corrected to work as expected (the bug and its proposed fix is signaled since several years).
• The workaround is simple, use: "{{PAGESINCAT:{{#titleparts:{{{1}}}}}|R}}", where #titleparts will HTML-decode its parameter (it won't be HTML-encoded once again because we are no longer in the page-parsing step, but still in the template expansion step.

My block

You blocked me to quickly, Steinsplitter.

There are two things going on here. First, Multichill reported me on that page for my uploads. A legitimate report. Secondly, Fæ intervened and in no time Fae, among other things, accused me of stealing images and described an upload from a file from the Bosch restoration group as the colours are so bizarrely false that the image is like a cartoon parody of the original. Fae made this discussion into a personal attack, that is what I feel about it. A proposal was made in which I was requested not to overwrite files, which I was willing to accept, but at that moment I found out that Fae was doing just that, overwriting files. That annoyed me, and I decided to leave commons behind for a while. What made things get out of hand was, I assume, a deletion nomination of one of Fae's files, an infrared image of one of the Bosch paintings.

As I see it, Fae started to provoke me, first with an overwrite of File:Frans Hals, Portrait of René Descartes.jpg with an image that does not at all resemble the image in the museum. If Fae would have followed the proposal the image should have been reverted to the first version, but Fae didn't. Then Fae overwrote File:Susan Oliver (1971).jpg. According to Fae's own proposal the overwrite was misplaced, and then, things got out of hand and the edit war started.

In the AN/U discussion Fae claims that overwriting files is not proper, but Fae does do exactly that. Fae claims I fake EXIF data. The EXIF segment is not a token of originality, as Fae apparently thinks, but a documentation/description of that file. If an image has EXIF data I complete it, if an image doesn't have EXIF data I add it with as complete as possible data. There is nothing faked about that. Fae claims my upload of File:Susan Oliver (1971).jpg does not have a date and a source. That is not true, as anyone can see. It is/was in the file description and in the EXIF data.

Fae used this edit war to block me. However, this edit war is not about the AN/U discussion. I feel this is a personal attack. And I am sorry to say, you fell for it.

I am not happy that you reverted the Susan Oliver image to a state I did not upload, and I am not happy that you reverted the René Descartes image to a state that really does not represent the painting. Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 20:12, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

With regard to File:Susan Oliver (1971).jpg, I created File:Susan Oliver.jpg after Jan reverted to his smoothed version so that we would avoid any further edit-warring reverts. My expectation was that File:Susan Oliver (1971).jpg would be left as Jan's preferred version, and the new file would be considered the cropped archive photo accurate version. Sources would need to reflect that fact. In this sense, reverting the file is not needed as we now have duplicates, so it is better to either roll back to Jan's smoothed version or simply delete it as a misleading image that damages the intended portrait made by photographer. --Fæ (talk) 23:32, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Category switch question/problems

Hey Stein. I'm hoping you can help me with this. I've consolidated my cleanup categories, but I'm having trouble with one of them. I'm trying to move the files in Category:Files uploaded by INeverCry (Nevada) to Category:Files uploaded by INeverCry (cleanup). I've tried cat-a-lot and custom replace in VisualFileChange, but cat-a-lot keeps giving me the error message that "the old category can't be found", and VFC was only able to custom replace about 35 out of the 800+ files (it just skipped over the rest). Any idea how to move the files in Category:Files uploaded by INeverCry (Nevada) to Category:Files uploaded by INeverCry (cleanup) using a different method? Anything you could do would be appreciated. It's no big deal though; I can work from Category:Files uploaded by INeverCry (Nevada) if I have to. INeverCry 02:26, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi! Könnte man für den vom SteinsplitterBot generierten Report Commons:Database reports/Video and audio uploads anstatt <gallery> den code <gallery showfilename={anything}> verpassen? Weil dann die Dateien mit einem Klick sofort aufrufbar zum Check wären. So, wie es aktuell ist, muss man (insbesondere bei audio files) erst die Benutzerseite aufrufen, dann zu den Beiträgen und die Datei per Datum suchen. Bei Videos springt zunächst der Player an, danach geht's erst über das Menü zum Link. Im Beispiel (die ersten drei Dateien aus dem heutigen Report):

@Darwinius, Steinsplitter: hey I hate to be a buzzkill, but this range was and still is quite problematic, so I think we should reinstate the original block. I have provided IP block exempt to the users in question regardless. You can see User:Teles/Angola Facebook Case, although even this touches only a fraction of the problem. Unfortunately, the "account creation blocked" option doesn't seem to be working effectively with unified login.

I would love to come up with a good block message with instructions in languages (especially Portuguese!) on how users can request an account with IP block exemption.

If so, we should be prepared to grant ipblock-exempt flag to many users, which IMO is the best solution here. We should provide a mail address to be added to block summary, otherwise users may just give up editing. I have already received two mails about this block and I don't know how they reached me. Diese wurden von dir mittlerweile gelöscht (was sicherlich deine Arbeit ist :)). Jetzt hatte ich bei dem Uhrheber Angerufen gehabt, und er meinte er hätte Wikimedia die Erlaubnis per Email zugesendet?

The template will be used on about 2000 file pages, and I want to have the template translated into as many languages as possible. The current template (with the old translation method) is translated to eleven languages, but it is a complicated process. It is currently used on 1940 pages. Another question: The <tvar|parameter> function is really great (i recently discovered it) but if I want the same $parameter twice in the text, how do I code that? I tried the year <tvar|year>{{{1}}}</tvar> is the year <tvar|year/>, but that didn't work. Should I type <tvar|year>{{{1}}}</tvar> twice? (BK) Hä? Leistungsschutz ist ein Teil des Urheberrechtsgesetzes, in Deutschland beispielsweise § 72 UrhG. Da passt die verlinkte Richtlinie, die sich auf Dinge wie Markenrechte o.ä. bezieht, nicht. Europäisches Leistungsschutzrecht entspricht ja sogar eher dem amerikanischen Copyright als das europäische Urheberrecht. Du hättest mir wenigstens sagen können, dass das Template, auf das Du verwiesen hast, nicht einmal eine Stunde zuvor und ohne jegliche vorherige Diskussion erstellt worden ist. Das ist also niemals von irgendwem geprüft worden, auch nicht von der Commons-Community; vielmehr hat hier jemand seine ganz persönliche Überlegung angestellt und daraufhin sein Lizenztemplate erstellt. So funktionieren hier also Entscheidungsfindungen. Dass man diese Überlegung ("hat ja keiner auf den Knopf gedrückt") auch auf alle anderen Arten von Lichtbildern und Lichtbildwerken übertragen kann und sie somit definitiv ad absurdum führt, wurde also nichtmal irgendwo kritisch hinterfragt. Lustigerweise erwähnt übrigens de:Lichtbild ausdrücklich "Bilder aus Überwachungskameras", und das seit 2012. Was ein grandioser Vorgang, über den Du schützend Deine Hand hälst ... POTY and the Wikimedia Blog

Hi Steinsplitter,

The Wikimedia Blog will be covering the end of the contest, hopefully with an interview with the winning photographer.

However, to accompany that with a social media push, we need explicit permission from the photographers to post their material on Facebook and Twitter—to make a long story short, their terms of use do not mesh with CC BY-SA.

Can you put this question, or something similar to it, into your standard email template for at least the winners (if not the top 30) to go into round 2? "Will you allow your image to be posted on the official social media accounts for Wikimedia sites, including Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons?"

And how quickly after POTY's end you'd like to have permission by the photographers onto your table? The issue is: If we contact a lot of people directly after having the R1 result and then, they do not see their photos or other media works in your blog after R2 because it was only #30 or similar, they might be sad. Hi Steinsplitter, File:Big Buck Bunny 4K.webm wurde gestern gelöscht (log), vermutlich zu Unrecht im Wirrwarr des "Bangladesh Facebook Case" (das Video wurde kürzlich in diversen betreffenden Facebook Gruppen ge-shared, z.B. hier) — ist aber per File:Big Buck Bunny alt.webm oder File:Big Buck Bunny medium.ogv oder {{Big Buck Bunny}} in CC. Siehe auch Category:Big Buck Bunny. File:Big Buck Bunny 4K.webm ist dabei die "große" Variante, während die anderen vorgenannten Dateien kleinere, downsampled bzw. modifizierte Versionen sind. Könntest Du das kurz überprüfen und die Datei wieder herstellen? Es sei denn, es lag irgendein anderer Grund für die Löschung vor. ich hoffe, Du kannst mir beim Helfen helfen: Eine Deutsche Benutzerin hat die Genehmigung der Fotografin für eine Fotografie vorliegen, aber die Fotografin hat offenbar keine Mail-Adresse. Sie hat mich nun nach dem korrekten Vorgehen gefragt. Ich dachte, der Fall kann nicht so selten sein und die Vorgehensweise muss dokumentiert sein, aber auf die Schnelle wurde ich doch nicht fündig. Bangladesh Facebook Case (abuse filter)

Hi Steinsplitter! Danke für die Arbeit an den beiden Filtern (upload + edit). Wie zu erwarten war, lässt schon der jetzt vorhandene log den Schluss zu, dass über Wikipedia Zero zu 98 % nur Müll hochgeladen wird (copyvios/PS/etc.). In dem ganzen log vom Start bis 16:22 Uhr habe ich im Prinzip nur 1-3 Dateien gefunden, die (wie auch immer) "edukativ" brauchbar und auch höchstwahrscheinlich eigenes Werk (bzw. sonstwie im CC) sind. Der Filter schlägt übrigens auch dann an, wenn keine Datei hochgeladen wurde (vermutlich wegen anderer Filter hinsichtlich des Dateinamens). Und das ist auch gut so: wie Du im Verlauf des logs siehst, tauchen dort auch viele rote Links mit Dateinamen in Zahlenketten auf: das sind größtenteils typische Facebook-urls und vermutlich alle copy&paste von dort. Z.B. AbuseLog/1235941 --> File:12238397 837532279691165 5311859693718564573 o.jpg (upload verhindert) --> (Sekunden später) --> File:ALs maths Central College.jpg (upload ok). Und woher geklaut? Von https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=837532279691165. Das klappt nicht immer, aber immer öfter :-).
Hinweis I: im log gibt es manchmal teils mehrstündige Pausen, so z.B. zwischen:

• 14:05, 7. Apr. 2016 — 15:14, 7. Apr. 2016 (1 Stunde keine Aktivität)
• 07:58, 7. Apr. 2016 — 09:47, 7. Apr. 2016 (fast 2 Stunden keine Aktivität)
• 02:04, 7. Apr. 2016 — 05:02, 7. Apr. 2016 (fast 3 Stunden keine Aktivität)
• 22:19, 6. Apr. 2016 — 00:07, 7. Apr. 2016 (fast 2 Stunden keine Aktivität)

Verschluckt sich der Filter da ein bisschen oder wie könnte man das erklären? Weil davor und danach größtenteils die uploads nahezu im Minutentakt weiter laufen...

Hinweis II: auch heute wurden wieder im Rahmen des "Bangladesh Facebook Case" zahlreiche geklaute Videos hochgeladen, die dann sofort auf Facebook zum Teilen angeboten worden sind. Z.B. durch Masuma.akter (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads) block user (bereits gesperrt und alles gelöscht). Im ganzen log taucht jedoch (bisher) kein einziges Video auf (webm, ogv, etc.). Offensichtlich benutzen diese Benutzer bezahlte Mobilzugänge (flats) mit besseren Bandbreiten (ich habe schon komplette Filme mit +1 GB zum Löschen markiert), um diese Videos mit teils hunderten von megabytes hochzuladen... @Gunnex: Hi, Der Filter schlägt bei action=upload an, egal ob was hochgeladen wird oder nicht und der Filter ist noch nicht auf "verhindern" gesetzt, das bedeutet das Uploads nur geloggt werden. Es kann gut sein das auch teilweise bezahltes Intenet verwendet wird zum hochladen von Dateien. Getaggt sollte nämlich alles werden was über die X-Carrier für wp-zero läuft. Zudem könnte es auch an phab:T132048 liegen, was ich aufgrund der Abstände eher nicht glaube. Muss man mal genauer beobachten. Last but not leas: Bitte denk nochmal drüber nach ob du Admin werden willst, das wäre sicherlich eine große Hilfe für uns wenn du auch Knöpfe hättest. Danke für das feedback [und Halbzeitpause Dortmund-Liverpool :-)]. Das mit dem "verhindern" wird wohlmöglich erst dann eine Option, wenn wir genug Daten haben. Aber das wird sicherlich breiter zu diskutieren sein. Ich hab's mir nur im Vorfeld genauso vorgestellt: Wikipedia als Facebook-Ersatz und kostenloser Image-hoster. Insoweit bleibt da erstmal nur abzuwarten und vorallem: löschen-löschen-löschen. Im übrigen erreichen auch die cross-wiki-uploads (über den Visual Editor) ähnliche "bad ratios", zumindest für die ptwiki (kleiner Test hier, setze ich aktuell über quarry fort, Auswertung kommt irgendwann...) — und aufgrund des ähnlichen kulturellen backgrounds sieht's vermutlich für die cross-wiki-uploads aus der eswiki ähnlich schlecht aus.

Ich wollte mich im Prinzip nur vergewissern, ob der Filter auch in Deinem Sinne ordnungsgemäß läuft, ein "Danke schön" loswerden und ein paar technische Details bzw. Auffälligkeiten klären. In Sachen admin (danke): mir reichen (auch vom zeitlichen Engagement gesehen) die Knöpfe, über die ich aktuell verfüge :-). Gunnex (talk) 20:41, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

Help: Wiki Photo Tours

Dear Steinsplitter

Trust you are good. We are currently working on the above mentioned project.

We made use of two Photographers. We are in the process of uploading the images we have gathered. We would appreciate your advice on the following questions:

1. Who can upload the images (We plan to use the communities members but the images were captured by the Photographers)?. 2. Which license would be most suitable? ( We aim to License the images under 4.0 Share alike) .

wenn Du nicht mit sinnlosen Namensänderungen in mein System der Namensgebung für meine File eingreifst. Der Name File:Taipei Taiwan Police-bus-01.jpg sagt genau aus, was es ist. Ein Polizeibus. Man braucht das nicht in ein kryptisches File:Taipei City Police Department BA-882 20140518.jpg zu ändern. Die Wahrheit liegt in der Beschreibung des Files, nicht im Namen. Du erhältst diese Nachricht als Teilnehmer von Wiki Loves Earth 2014 oder 2015. Dieses Jahr wird sich Deutschland wieder am Fotowettbewerb Wiki Loves Earth beteiligen. Wir würden uns über weitere Bilder von Dir freuen. Der Zeitraum für das Hochladen der Naturbilder ist vom 1. bis 31. Mai 2016.

Für die Weitergabe an den internationalen Wettbewerb ist ab diesem Jahr eine Mindestauflösung von 2 Megapixeln erforderlich. Bitte gib an, in welchem Schutzgebiet oder an welchem Schutzobjekt (z.B. Naturdenkmal, Geotop) die Fotos gemacht wurden. Wenn Bilder gar nicht zugeordnet werden können, gelangen sie nicht in die Wertung. In die Bilder eingefügte Zusätze wie der Name des Fotografen, Datum, Beschreibung oder ein Rahmen sind unerwünscht.

Seit der letzten Runde sind unter anderem Listen aller FFH-Gebiete und EU-Vogelschutzgebiete in Deutschland erstellt worden, die nun ebenfalls auf Bilder warten.

Dieses Jahr wird eine Vorjury die Vorauswahl der Bilder nach den Wettbewerbsregeln übernehmen. Als Teilnehmer aus den Vorjahren kannst Du Dich daran beteiligen. Bei Interesse bitte unter WLE-Vorjury eintragen, ein Zugangscode kommt per E-Mail.

Weiterleitungsproblem

Am 4. Februar 2014 legte ich die Kategorie "Cenderawasih" an (siehe https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Cenderawasih&oldid=115589393). Wie ich heute erst bemerkt habe, legte am 21. März 2014 ein User eine Weiterleitung von Cenderawasih auf eine Vogel-Gallery an, wodurch die Suche nach der Stadt in Sabah wirkungslos bleibt (siehe https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cenderawasih&oldid=119716254). Diese Vogelweiterleitung ist jedoch irreführend, da es lediglich in der Indonesischen Sprache eine Vogelart gibt, die lokal "Burung-burung cenderawasih" heisst. Die einzige richtige Weiterleitung, wenn man schon Sprachweiterleitungen anlegen will, wäre von "Burung-burung cenderawasih" auf die "Paradisaeidae"-Gallery, nicht aber von "Cenderawasih" auf die Paradiesvögel.

Diese Weiterleitung müsste also gelöscht werden. Ich bin selbst etwas verwundert, wie es möglich ist eine Weiterleitung über eine Kategorie anzulegen. Kannst Du Dich bitte des Problems annehmen? Danke! --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 16:57, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

Merkwürdigkeiten bei Unterseiten mit Übersetzungen

’Tschulljung, dass ich dich direkt anspreche, aber Du scheinst mir bei dem Thema Ahnung zu haben oder wenigstens die richtigen Ansprechpartner zu kennen. Im Forum weiß ich immer nicht, ob es eine Reaktion von einem Admin gibt, obwohl Du einer der wenigen bist, die dort überhaupt reagieren.

Wie Du sicherlich mitbekommen hattest, hatte ich nach der Übersetzung für das Verschiebeformular gesucht (vergleiche im Archiv Commons:Forum/Archiv/2016/June#Übersetzung oder Textkorrektur des Formulars zur Dateienumbenennung). Nach einiger Suche bin ich dann doch allein drauf gekommen (letzter Beitrag im Thread – ja, das hätte mir auch früher einfallen können – und wenn Du ausnahmsweise ganz groooße Langeweile hast, kannst Du die Übersetzung ja mal kontrollieren), aber bei der Suche danach ist mir folgende Merkwürdigkeit aufgefallen: Ich startete mit der Suche nach den ersten drei englischen Sätzen. Während ich für den ersten 1 Ergebnis bekam (und so merkte, dass die Übersetzung total zerstückelt ist: Translations:Template:File renaming reasons/i18n/44/en), war das Ergebnis für die zwei anderen für mich verwirrend: Für Satz 2 erhielt ich auch 2 Funde: Translations:Template:File renaming reasons/i18n/3/en und Translations:Template:File renaming reasons/i18n/45/en; für Satz 3 dann sogar 3 Funde: Translations:Template:File renaming reasons/i18n/1/en, Translations:Commons:File renaming/4/en und Translations:Template:File renaming reasons/i18n/46/en. Wie kommt denn sowas zustande und sollten die inaktiven Versionen nicht wenigstens auf die aktuelle Version weiterleiten, damit bei einer Suche nur diese gefunden wird? Ich habe übrigens dann nicht weiter gesucht, ob es bei den anderen Teilen ebenso mehrere Versionen gibt.
Noch eine andere, zum Thema passende Frage: Wie kann ich für MediaWiki:Gadget-AjaxQuickDelete.js/DeleteInfo eine Übersetzung erzeugen? — Speravir_Talk – 23:33, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Bei AJAX delete müsste man schauen ob bei MediaWiki:Gadget-AjaxQuickDelete.js/de.js was übersetztes fehlt, bei MediaWiki:Gadget-AjaxQuickDelete.js/DeleteInfo kann man die Übersetzung als |de= hinzufügen (seite ist geschützt, also auf der Disk vorschlagen und {{editprotected}} setzen oder mich fragen). lg --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:38, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Zur Deleteinfo: OK, ich mach erstmal einen Vorschlag auf der Disk. Dass es dort per LangSwitch gelöst ist, war mir entgangen; ich dachte, das geht ebenfalls über diese Translate-Erweiterung. Nebenbei: Kannst du eventuell ohne Edit-Request im englischen Text aus "proceed" ein “proceed” machen, also die im Englischen üblichen typographischen Anführungszeichen einfügen oder wär es dir lieber, wenn ich das auch auf der Disk anfrage?
