Originally a project funded in 2000-01 by Los_Alamos_National_Laboratory to create easy-to-use Open_source replacements for basic Software_engineering tools aimed at programmers working in Computational_science. The project began with a design competition; two of the four sub-projects it supported (Roundup and SCons) attained critical mass, and are still active. Software_Carpentry is now a course on basic software development skills for programmers with backgrounds in science and engineering, rather than computer science. The course notes and other materials are all Open_source, and freely available over the web at http://swc.scipy.org.
