Only use this page to report bugs in the current version of the software. Update to the most recent version, check to make sure your bug has not been reported already on this page, and read the FAQ before posting a bug here. See How to Report Bugs Effectively for advice on how to write bug reports.

Before posting anything related to non-Wikimedia Foundation wikis, make sure that this site has a recent SVN version of MediaWiki with enabled Bot API. Older versions of MediaWiki or without the Bot API are not supported. Be sure to mention the exact URL of your wiki.

Please check reported or fixed bugs before filing a new one!

Any discussion can follow as normal.

This format allows the developers to keep track of bugs and to make sure the bugs are fixed as fast as possible. Once the bugs have been fixed, they will be moved to /Archive 15.

If you cannot find your Bug on this page, please check /Archive 15, as it may have been fixed.

To list a bug use the following template

{{AWB bug
| status = new <!-- when fixed replace with "fixed" -->
| description = <!-- Place description of the bug here -->~~~~
| duplicate = <!-- Directions to recreate the bug (i.e. what did you do that caused this bug); leave blank if unknown or not applicable -->
| site = <!-- The site you were working with when the error occurred -->
| OS = <!-- Your operating system (should be one of Windows 7, Vista, or XP) -->
| version = <!-- The version of AWB you are using -->
| workaround = <!-- Any workaround for the problem -->
| fix_version = <!-- Version of AWB the fix will be included in; AWB developer will complete when it's fixed -->

This is quite serious, since AWB aborts after this. Workaround is to delete AWBUpdater.exe. This causes AWB to think it is offline, but it starts and can be used. --WolfgangRieger (talk) 16:14, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

I get the same bug on Windows XP SP3. AWB version 5.0.2.0, AWB updater 2.0.0.5, ASP Frameworks: 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5. When starting AWB, the AWB updater starts and reports "there is an update to the AWB updater", asks me to exit AWB, then downloads something and says

"Problem replacing file: Could not find file 'C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\$AWB$UPDATER$TEMP$\AWBUpdater.exe'. Please close all applications that may use it and press 'Retry' to try again or 'Cancel' to cancel the upgrade."

I say 'cancel' and am back in the AWB Updater window, and 'Close' gives me nothing. Workaround: when AWB asks "Are you sure to want to exit" click on "Go back" and ignore the updater. AxelBoldt (talk) 19:20, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

I've also been having this bug for the past few updates. If I go to the Temp folder, I see that the AWB$UPDATER$TEMP$ folder is present, but empty. I think another workaround that worked for me was to kill the AWBUpdater program and proceed with AWB, but the better approach is to download the new version manually until this bug is resolved. —Ost (talk) 18:07, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

I have just the same problem (Windows XP SP2, AWB 5.0.2.0, AWB Updater 2.0.0.5, .NET 2.0.50727.42). The saddest thing that now I cannot switch off the automatic update and it starts (and fails) every time I start AWB. --Vladimir Ivanov (talk) 13:35, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Geraki, did this occur when you pressed Start in the Plugins tab? -- Magioladitis (talk) 10:09, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Yep, I'm getting this one as well. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 12:47, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

I am pretty sure that this related to the timer and the way we save the plugin's stats. I ll try to do some debugging later. -- Magioladitis (talk) 10:43, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Method to correctly count Kingbotk edits:

  • Save text
  • Apply plugin changes
    • If old text <> new text add 1 to Tagged
  • Apply genfixes

-- Magioladitis (talk) 20:16, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

I believe this is the same error that I pointed out. If thats the case its due to the Plugin getting stuck on comments. Could you provide them an example article or two that generates the error. --Kumioko (talk) 13:32, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
Duplicate with Wikipedia_talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Bugs#ArgumentOutOfRangeException_in_AsyncApiEdit.CallEvent. Charles_Edward are you trying to assess articles? -- Magioladitis (talk) 15:02, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm getting it too when trying to assess and cleanup metalworking articles. Wizard191 (talk) 13:39, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
The problem is in the way we do the ststistics in KingbotK. We are already aware of that. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:58, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes I am trying to assess. I can get through, say fifty or more without an error, and then it gets to a patch where its error after error. Then it clears back up and I can assess another fifty or so before it craps out again. I have just been going back and manually assessing all the errored ones right now. I think this is related to other errors posted here. Here's some examples:
  1. Samuel Henderson (Indianapolis mayor), I can load the page, then click skip or save to get to the talk and it hangs. It never loads the talk page. If I click skip or save a second time, the above error occurs. If I click stop, then restart, or just click start without stopping, I get the above error too. Then upon restarting I get the "pluggin was expecting talk page" error.
  2. Same with Jim Hill (Oregon politician)
Eventually you get through the "bad" articles and it will start working again. I don't see on the talk pages of those articles any comments, or things like that. And it is on such a variety of articles and they have no common template except the Indiana project template, which I am assessing for. —Charles Edward (Talk | Contribs) 14:09, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Happens when I try to do assessments with WikiProject Ontario Roads. Half the pages come up with an error saying 'AWB expected a talk page', with only OK to click. That stops the processing. I click start again, and it often skips the item and goes to the next and asks the same thing. Eventually it will go, but then this error will come up and stop the processing again. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 12:49, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Like Krinkle, above, I'm afraid I don't know what was different about this particular save compared to all the others before and after it which worked without any problem. I do remember that it was near the end of a list of about 40-45 pages, but wasn't the last one in the list - I think it was 3 or 4 from the end.

Kingbotk in not handling blp parameter in WPBS

Status Nuvola apps important.svg New
Description Check this one as example. I was tagging people as dead with AWB/Kingbok plugin. Living parameter was correctly changing from yes to no. But blp=yes was supposed to be removed as well. I had the same problem for the other direction as well: When I am marking people as alive, Kingbotk doesn't add blp=yes in WPB nor WPBS if they are present. -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:44, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

I summarise a bit here. This is a to-do list. TO DO:

  1. Support new priority parameters i.e. don't remove them and don't add empty priority parameters is one of the new ones exist
  2. If priority parameter is missing, keep adding the generic priority parameter
    1. In the future: If a work-group exists and the corresponding priority parameter is missing, add it
    2. In the future: If a work-group exists and a generic priority parameter exists, replace it with the one corresponding to the work-group.
  3. If living parameter is missing, add an empty living field unless class=dab
  4. If listas parameter is missing, add an empty listas field

Yeah no problem if you pull in virtually any of the articles from the Category:Recipients of the Medal of Honor you get it. A couple specific articles are talk:Gary Evans Foster or Talk:Gary George Wetzel. Please let me know if you need anything else. --Kumioko (talk) 14:27, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
The bad tag report is from this mess of "B class checklist" items. Not sure why the plugin does not like it, it may be getting confused because of the hidden comments. –xenotalk 14:44, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
Oh ok, if its worth mentioning I am going to cleanup all those comments to the shortened version on the milhist banner page, like below. I just haven't gotten that far along yet. Unfortunately most folks don't appreciate the need for the talk page banners so they are a mess.
<!-- B-Class 5-criteria checklist -->
|B1 <!-- Referencing and citations --> = y/n
|B2 <!-- Coverage and accuracy --> = y/n
|B3 <!-- Structure --> = y/n
|B4 <!-- Grammar and style --> = y/n
|B5 <!-- Supporting materials --> = y/n --Kumioko (talk) 14:57, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Summary:

  • Don't tag disamb articles as orphan  Done rev 5888 too. Rjwilmsi 00:24, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
  • IF >= 3 incoming links (excluding redirects, only mainspace, not dabs), then article is not an orphan for sure and AWB should remove the tag if found
  • Orphans have less than 3 incoming links to themselves or their redirects. These links should not be redirects or dabs.

Current status:

  • Tagger will tag as an orphan an article that has less than 3 incoming links to itself or its redirects that there are not redirects. rev 6013
  • Tagger will untag an article from being orphan if it has 3 or more incoming links to itself or its redirects that there not redirects. rev 6013

Conclusion:

  • Tagging is 100% accurate. If an article is tagged as an orphan, it is an orphan.
  • More articles can be orphans. This is the case that some of the incoming links are dab pages.

We have a patch (for both ru and uk) almost ready but we need to do some other stuff first. -- Magioladitis (talk) 02:29, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

We have to be careful because orphans in ru.wiki have exactly 0 incoming links + some other details (they check for isolated articles). We should postpone any fix until we start implementing local settings. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:53, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

My view is we have to have a way to disable or even depricate this function for a particular wiki. The first reason is that AWB does not recognize whether the page linking the article is an article itself. Also in Ruwiki we do recognize isolated clusters and in this case the article, which does link the page could be from claster _2 (a pair of articles linked together but whith no links to this particular one), in this case the article AWB edits is not orphan, but an _2_1 article. I would need a way to make this function not working in ruwiki. Mashiah (talk) 21:48, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

AWB will ignore redirects from counting. So, first part is fullfilled. -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:27, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

No, this is not proscribed in sv:Wikipedia:Disposition and it is not how our editors generally do it. The stub template is a template and in similarity to other templates it tends to be placed where in the text you want it. Tomas e (talk) 17:06, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Hm... Stub moving is part genfixes. Unfortunately, moving categories comes with moving stubs. If you want both disactivated, disactivate general fixes. Nothing else we can do at the moment. Why don't just add it to the Manual of Style. Position has to do of how the page is rendered. since all projects use MediaWiki the best position for stubs is under categories. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:12, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Make list display becomes somewhat garbled when scrolling fast

Status Nuvola apps important.svg New
Description When quickly scrolling up and down through a large list in the make list window (by clicking and dragging the slider in the scroll bar), some of the entries overwrite each other in terms of how they are displayed. The entries themselves are fine; however, some of the article titles have the names of the articles that were above them listed on top of them. For example, one of the entries of the list I have open right now is for New York State Route 470. It should read just "New York State Route 470"; however, the displayed text is "New York State Route 470" with the words "New York State Route 446" (the article above it in the list) overlaid on top. – TMF 19:22, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
To duplicate: Make a large list (the list I noticed this on was 215 entries long) and scroll up and down using the method described above
Operating system Windows 7
.NET FW Version Unknown
AWB version 4.9.0.3 rev5636, but this issue existed in the last snapshot I used (I think it was around rev5580 or so) as well.
Workaround 1) Ignore the garbled text and use AWB as usual. 2) Clicking on the garbled entry (highlighting it) will correct the displayed text. 3) Scrolling slower (using the arrows and/or by clicking in the scroll bar) doesn't seem to cause this issue.

This may be related to this bug, but I don't think it's the same exact issue. – TMF 19:25, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

I'd be inclined to agree. I think i have seen it also, but marked it as the controls fault, rather than AWB's. Reedy 10:52, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

Keyboard shortcut stops working

Status Bug currently being investigated/fixed
Description The save keyboard shortcut works fine when AWB is first started; to save, you can use "Alt-s", "Ctrl-s", or even just "s". But if you click in the diff area or text box (including scroll bar), then the shortcut stops working until you restart AWB. (Note that "Alt-g" continues working for ignore, although I believe that ignore has been replaced with skip in the next version, so the shortcut will probably be different). If you subsequently click in one of various places such as in the edit box, list box, diff area, or on the Start tab, the save shortcut will then work once immediately thereafter, but then stops working again. This was originally reported on WT:AWB by ZooFari (talk · contribs), but that report was recently archived without any action. The keyboard shortcut feature is a very useful one, providing a comfortable alternative to stressful repeated mouse clicking, so I've brought the issue here. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 01:32, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

Ctrl+S works only if the program is focused in the edit area. I thought this was the expected behaviour. (Btw, the pther discussion was automatically archived by a bot). -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:56, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
Having to click in the edit box completely negates the convenience of having a keyboard shortcut (except on those occasions when you happen to have been making a manual edit anyways). The keyboard shortcut to Save should be just as available as the one to Ignore is. Try making a list of pages (with all skip options disabled), and see how easy it is to go through the list by pressing Alt-g to Ignore them. It should be just as convenient to use Alt-s or Ctrl-s to Save. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 09:57, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
IMHO the keyboard shortcuts should work in the entire main window of AWB. Not sure why they don't at the moment. Rjwilmsi 10:00, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
Most likely is a detached event or something... Reedy 10:02, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

Start AWB -> Press Ctrl+E to start external processing. Nothing happens. Click with the mouse in the list box. Press Ctrl+E. It works. Close window and click with the mouse in the diff window. Press Ctrl+E. No response. (same with ctrl+M). -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:04, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

All shortcuts work only if AWB is focused in List box or Edit box and nowhere else. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:06, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
I just tested the newest version (SVN 5899) and verified that Alt-k correctly Skips anywhere, just as Alt-g did in previous versions. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 20:43, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
I think there are two issues with Alt-S:
  1. When the browser portion of the window has the focus, it prevents the proper function of the Alt- and Cmd- functions. I bet IE grabs the keystrokes before the main thread of AWB sees them.
  2. When "Start" is not the current tab and the Save button is not visible, the Alt-S shortcut won't work. Windows only honors Alt shortcuts for active controls, and a hidden control is not active.
It would be very helpful if this could be addressed. Having to click in the edit box before using Alt-S is inconvenient. Using a Cmd- key shortcut for a new "Save article text" menu entry would help with #2. I am not sure how you resolve #1 if my guess about the focus issue is right. — John Cardinal (talk) 22:10, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
rev 6397 Partial improvement: keyboard focus is now correct over many page loads & saves until the diff area is clicked (after that focus is only sometimes correct). Needs further investigation. Rjwilmsi 01:11, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Tried it in sandbox without unicodify enabled and it still happened. Since this is an invalid Unicode character: 1) can't see it being a major/widespread issue and 2) maybe something done by .NET rich text box? Rjwilmsi 14:13, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
I can't see that character anywhere. Need to check what it is when it's read from the api, after process (ie before it goes into the text box), what it comes out of the textbox as, and what it is just before the API submits it... Reedy 14:42, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Saving-problems

Status Works for me
Description I use AWB to fix links on pages and on many large pages AWB isn't able to do anything, while the exact link is on the page. If I set Auto save on, then after some tries (which take each many seconds/minutes with message "Processing page") AWB stops (message in the bottom bar is "Stopped"). If I set Auto save off, then after a long time of several seconds/minutes with message "Processing page", AWB has changed the page as I set in AWB and shows it to me as usual with message "Ready to Save", and then I hit the Save-button shortly, but then it says connection failed and goes "restarting in ..." counting down. And a new reload follows which takes again a long time, etc... On many pages this doesn't occur (mostly small pages with relative few templates), but on hundreds of pages it occurs in what appears to be mostly large pages like nl:Roeien op de Olympische Zomerspelen 1984. To me it looks like AWB isn't able to handle large pages anymore. In the past I had only problems with slowlyness with AWB on pages which use nl:Template:Stamboom, but then the saving worked fine. I have used the previous one 5.0.1.1 or which ever it was, it worked perfectly there but now it doesnt. I try in the test thing for replacement by having Umbrean replaced with anything, it finds it perfectly and replaces it but upon trying on the real deal it doesnt do it EmperorZelos (talk) 13:23, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Are you using Advanced Find and Replace? Are you using regexes? -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:29, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
I have used both simple and advanced replacement, both with and without regexes and still gives nothing. I ran a test where all were used at once to replace "Umbrean" with "Test" and it still says nothing occures and gives no result EmperorZelos (talk) 13:33, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Standard find and replace works fine for me on en-wiki (I don't have a wikia account to test against). If you want to remove categories then better to use the 'remove category' feature under the 'More' tab. Rjwilmsi 16:20, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I've seen what this will be: to remove categories from within a 'noinclude' you need to disable the 'ignore...' options in the find & replace window. Rjwilmsi 11:00, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Need update - Update check broken ?

5.0.2.0 worked a few days ago, but now won't start without requiring an "update" to run. It runs updater, which attempts to update the program (after fixing path issues) and of course there's no new update applied. This process can repeat indefinitely. Shadowjams (talk) 23:37, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Errm, not quite. It's an update to the updater. But the updater you'll have installed is probably borked, and therefore doesn't complete successfully. Download and replace manually [12] Reedy 06:36, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I see the issue now, and have it working. The one point of confusion is that the auto-update function would error out because the temporary path would fail (it was missing the directory by one heiarachy so I tried to update it manually, not realizing the Updaters were different (til I checked the md5s on them). Thank you. Shadowjams (talk) 21:52, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

On Amphibious Assault Vehicle no defaultsort is needed (article in Title Case), on Balangiga massacre the Restrict DEFAULTSORT change/addition option works fine for me. Rjwilmsi 07:07, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
For me too. -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:27, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Sorry its the newest version SVN 6405, I just downloaded it yesterday. I agree that none is needed but it prompts me for it anyway even though the restrict default is selected and I have to deselect it. It doesn't happen on every article, but it does it a lot. It seems to do it a lot for the battles as well so for the Battle of Bataan it would say Bataan, Battle of. --Kumioko (talk) 11:18, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
AWB would generate , not so it must be your own scripts doing it. Rjwilmsi 11:41, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
I don't have any scripts running at the moment. I turned them all off to make sure that wan't the case. --Kumioko (talk) 13:04, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Since you haven't replied I assume you don't know what the problem is so I will just keep unchecking it until its fixed.--Kumioko (talk) 01:31, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Okay, let's start again. I can't reproduce your problem. When you say "prompts me for it" I'm not clear how/where in AWB you are asked to provide a DEFAULTSORT? My understanding is that if the DEFAULTSORT restriction is off, AWB adds one itself without prompting you. Perhaps if you post your settings file and give me exact steps I can see what generates that prompt? Rjwilmsi 09:56, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Which preview? ie on loading show preview/changing the preview? If so, it would seemingly be the API returning the wrong HTML to render... Reedy 09:58, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
I usually have the preference on "On loading show changes", but tried the two others as well. Makes no difference. Either you can see the problem immediately (when the change is done automatically) or after pressing the "Preview" button on the "Start" tab. "the API returning the wrong HTML to render": looks like that to me, too.--ospalh (talk) 10:31, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
It seems, when you attempt to save Washington (U.S. state) in a page on current WMF release of mediawiki, it saves Washington. Reedy 10:55, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
Yes, that's why it's called the trick and listed under Help:Magic. I guess not using the pipe trick on automatic changes would be the Right Thing, but i like to use the trick on manual changes. If you use the trick in a web browser and use the "normal" "Show preview" button there, Washington (U.S. state) is shown as Washington (edited), differnt from what happens in AWB.--ospalh (talk) 11:01, 5 May 2010 (UTC), 11:07, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
I've seen this, too. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:57, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
I've seen it as well. I've always assumed it was because of the API, since if you edit an article in a browser, add a pipe-tricked linked link, and click "show changes", it shows the link being piped. Same thing with subst'ed templates: show changes in a browser shows it subst'ed, show changes in AWB doesn't. – TMF 13:30, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
I'll have to look into it. Depending on the configuration of how this works, is whether it'd be worth dealing with directly in AWB. Or if the API should be applying the pipetrick on the generated preview etc. Reedy 20:18, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
