  • Reason: I have been using the name "Slazenger" online for the past six or seven years (beginning on games and gaming sites, and now on everything - including my Wiki email 'Slazenger@ne.rr.com') and I feel as though it would be more appropriate to go by the name the internet knows me by. I created my account with the name "Tymun" as a combination of my first and last names...but due to the fact that I no longer use the name Tymun on any program or site I participate on, it has become a burden to go by it. I also am known as Slazenger on IRC. Given the lack of activity on the current account "Slazenger" and lack of a SUL under the name "Slazenger", I respectfully request to usurp the name for use across all wikimedia projects. After thinking it over, going by this name isn't a terrible hassle. It's not the name that matters, but rather what I contribute. I've been pretending this doesn't exist because I'm conflicted on how to handle it. There are 29 people in other languages who have this name, but have very very few edits. Thanks. I get the sense from that discussion that licensing may interfere with usurps. I also notice that you link there a usurp that you did of a user with a smaller number of edits (just over 100, versus around 300); also, the requester was an active sysop with tens of thousands of edits on his home project. That makes me think that as regards usurping in spite of licensing, we're now faced with something more extreme than what you referenced as a "corner case". I'm not a lawyer, and I certainly don't claim that there's copyright issues for a user with 300 edits that we would never face usurping any user with 10, but on the flip side, I see reason to proceed cautiously here. -- Pakaran 22:11, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
I wonder if, in cases like this, we could have a bot immediately follow a usurp rename to change the sigs wherever they may be so thy reflect the new username? We'd basically need to get the sig pattern for the bot to find so it could then change it to point to the new username. Sounds very good to me. If people can click through to the current username, I can't see how there'd be any concern around attribution of edits. We do need to figure out the details of what syntax the bot should take, etc. I believe a mechanism for checking if a request comes from a crat already exists, since I'm pretty sure the CHU archive bot does so. -- Pakaran 03:37, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Please leave talk pages alone. A bot is a horrible idea that will do far more harm than good here. You'll end up futzing with archives and other shit that shouldn't be touched, you'll have to deal with the complexity of finding signatures (people change them all the time), corner cases resulting in false positives (and false negatives), etc. Cost trumps benefit dramatically. If it's small enough to do it by hand, do it by hand. If it's not small enough to by hand, surely that says something about usurping the account? --MZMcBride (talk) 01:09, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
