History

The department was established in 1911, after a devastating fire which destroyed the community of South Porcupine, over 2,200 square kilometres (850 sq mi) of land, 73 people and $3 million in property. Locals gathered inside of a box car owned by the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway. The Town of Timmins was incorporated the next year.[2]
