Sinhala Buddhist College, Matale (Sinhala: මාතලේ සිංහල බෞද්ධ විද්‍යාලය), or (SBC), is a semi-government Buddhist school located in Matale, Sri Lanka. The school offers kindergarten, primary and secondary education, and is a private school in Matale, Sri Lanka.[1][2][3][4]

History

The school was established in 2014 under the guidance of Galkulame Uparathana Thero, Senior Lecturer of Sinhala and Modern Language Studies Department of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.[5] Before 2014, the school was registered as the Aloka Vidyalaya in 1957 by P.B. Ekanayake, which was later demolished in 1997.[6][7]

The initiative to restart a Buddhist school in Matale was taken by the founder of The Buddhist media network Daranagama Kusaladhamma Thero and Olaganwatte Chandasiri Thero, Senior Lecturer of Sinhala and Modern Language Studies Department of Rajarata University. The school was a "Non-Government Aided" Semi-Government School with the registration number ASN 1830 under the Aided Schools Act No. 05 of 1951, which was later included in the category of Government-aided Semi-Government Schools from the year 2019.[6]

Education

There are more than 1,500 students studying in the college. The school is supported to provide both primary and secondary education to the students to achieve the qualifications such as grade 5 scholarship exams, O/L and A/L. The English medium section of the school was started in 2021. Under GCE Advanced Level, students are enrolled to the Art and Commerce streams.
