Lazar (JPA: לִיעֶזֶר or לָעְזָר, romanized: Lāzār, Russian: Лазарь, romanizedLazar; Serbian, Bulgarian and Macedonian: Лазар, romanized: Lazar) is a male given name or a surname. An abbreviation of the Hebrew name אֶלְעָזָר Eleazar or אֱלִיעֶזֶר‎ Eliezer meaning 'God has helped'[1] which first appeared in Jewish Aramaic (see Lazarus and Eleazar ben Shammua) and is especially common in various Slavic languages.
