Nicolaus Thomas Host war ein österreichische Arzt und Botaniker. Auf seinen Vorschlag hin wurde 1793 der Flora austriaca viva (Host'sche Garten) beim Belvedere angelegt, der einen Überblick über die Flora Österreichs geben sollte: [1]. 1930 wurde der Host'sche Garten, der direkt südlich an den Botanischen Garten (gegründet 1754) anschloss mit diesem zusammengelegt. Der Alpengarten wurde 1803 von den Erzherzögen Johann, Rainer und Anton im Schlosspark Schönbrunn gegründet und 1865 in den Belvederegarten verlegt (südseitig des Host'schen Garten): [2].
