DescriptionThe Ionic Temple, Obelisk and Mirror Pond, Chiswick House-geograph-2668910-by-Stefan-Czapski.jpg |
English: The Ionic Temple, Obelisk and Mirror Pond, Chiswick House
Chiswick House as we know it was the brainchild of the 3rd Lord Burlington (1694-1753), and though both house and gardens have had to survive periods of neglect, the overall scheme - following restoration work in the last half-century - remains essentially his. According to Colen Campbell's 'Vitruvius Britannicus' (published in the 1720s) the little building shown here - which Campbell called 'bagno' (Italian for bath-house) - was Lord Burlington's first architectural project, dating from 1717. In the years which followed, Burlington - assisted by William Kent - went on to produce the design for the house itself. (Source: the Middlesex volume of Pevsner's 'The Buildings of England'.) |
