Summary
English: Satyr and nymph, attempted rape, Beauty of the Body exhibition, Archaeological Museum of Alicante. This young woman struggling to escape from a satyr is a nymph, a supernatural being associated with nature. Satyrs were mythical beings with a part-human body but with the legs, tail and ears of a horse. It was common to represent the nymphs, singular beings, naked and often victims of sexual assault by satyrs. This class of images were a form of pornography that filled male fantasies about unbridled sexual relations in a society in which respectable citizens and women were strictly regulated. This is one of many Roman copies of an earlier Greek work from the 2nd or 1st century BC which has not been preserved. The masterly interweaving of bodies in a complex composition intended to be seen from any position is characteristic of late Greek art. |
