Summary
DescriptionRough Riders Memorial - Arlington National Cemetery - Arlington Count VA USA - 1912.jpg |
English: Looking east at the front face of the Rough Riders Memorial in in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia, in the United States. Image was taken in 1912. The Spanish-American War Memorial (tall shaft with eagle on top) can be seen in the background.
The Rough Riders was the informal name for the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, a unit of the U.S. Army organized by Colonel Leonard Wood and a civilian, the former Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt. The Rough Riders fought in Cuba in several battles, but their most famous encounter was the charge up San Juan Hill east of Santiago de Cuba on July 1, 1898. The monument was erected in 1906 to commemorate those in the regiment who died during the war. |
