Summary
DescriptionNuclear abnormalities in peripheral blood erythrocytes of penguins Pygoscelis papua 4.JPG |
English: Micronuclei and nuclear abnormalities in peripheral blood erythrocytes of penguins Pygoscelis papua. A – "budding" nucleus ("broken egg"-type), B – "tailed" nucleus (nucleus with protrusion); C – two-lobed nucleus; D – erythrocyte amitosis. Blood samples were made by Assist. Prof. Dr. Vladimir Bezrukov, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, in 2003-2004 during VIII Ukrainian Antarctic expedition (Gentoo Penguin Colony, Petermann island, 65°10'S, 64°10'W).
Frequency and type of the most frequent nuclear abnormalities are used as markers of cytotoxic and genotoxic damage at the level of organism and population.
