DescriptionFreighting on Yukon Highway near Goldstream-cropped.jpg |
Caterpillar or similar tractor hauling wagons on Yukon Highway near Goldstream. The load appears to be pipe, likely for placer mining. The 1928 Alaska Tour (04) by Governor George A. Parks, Major Malcolm Elliott, Mr. R.J. Sommers, Territorial Hwy Engineer. The designation Yukon Highway does not appear to have been official or widely used. The Itinerary of Governor Parks trip is known; it was entirely within Alaska. Goldstream and Gilmore (mentioned in photo 7a of the same album) probably refer to locations in the mining district north and east of Fairbanks. Best guess is that this is what is now the Steese Highway, newly completed in 1928 and not yet (barely) named for Steese. Yukon in that case would refer to the Yukon River at the NE terminus of the road. |
