Summary
DescriptionFilipino sword tenegre panay overall.JPG |
English: The antique Philippine sword is from Panay Island in the Visayas. The sword is called "tenegre" (roughly, in the likeness of a tiger, that is its tooth versus the blade shape).
The above sample has a clip-point style. The blade is made of laminated steel and is chisel-ground (flat on one side and beveled on the other), as is typical of Visayan swords. Carved carabao horn handle has the traditional long-horned figural monster for pommel. The "S" guard is made of iron and the knuckle guard part is decorated. The ferrule is made of iron also. The scabbard is made of wood as is typical of Visayan swords (in Luzon, the scabbard is typically made of leather). The scabbard has animal hide for decoration. Close-up shots of the sword can be seen here (guard), here (hilt), and here (scabbard). Overall length: 557 mm (21.9 inches); Blade length: 418 mm (16.5 inches); Blade thickness: 5 mm (3/16 inch); Scabbard length: 460 mm (18.1 inches) Other uploaded materials by the same author are here: (a) Luzon weapons; (b) Visayan weapons; (c) Moro weapons; and (d) Lumad (non-Moro Mindanao) weapons |
