Summary
DescriptionEocarcinus reconstructon.jpg |
English: The new reconstruction of the habitus of Eocarcinus praecursor that takes the findings of this article into account (compare with Fig. 1). This relates to the shape and posture of the chelae, the transition between thorax and pleon, the elevated position of the 4th and 5th pereopods, the position in a notch between the 1st and 2nd pleomeres of the latter, and the shape and the posterior end of the pleon. The dactylus of the 5th pereopod is shown as being similar to those of the other legs, but a sub-chelate or chelate condition is also likely (see text). Furthermore, the relative proportions of thorax and pleon were adjusted. The telson is somewhat ambiguous. The reconstruction of the antennae is based on a number of anomalan and podotreme brachyuran species. Since E. praecursor is nested within Meiura, the 1st antennae most likely had the characteristic double bent Z-shape with short asymmetric flagella (see Scholtz and Richter, 1995). The flagella of the 2nd antennae of galatheids, and dromiaceans are relatively thin and longer than those of Eubrachyura. All Brachyura lack a scaphocerite. Two versions are shown: one with the pleon stretched out as in the fossil specimens (top) and one more hypothetical with a pleon flexed under the sternum (bottom). Artwork: Fabian Scholtz. |
