English: Commodore William Bainbridge re enslaved seaman James Hutton 6 June 1825 service on board USS Columbus and USS Spark. This letter was part of the evidence in the freedom suit Hutton v Belt 1825, where the District of Columbia court found Lt. William J Belt by entering the enslaved James Hutton on the payrolls of both vessels was substantial evidence of "implied manumission" accorded in the James Hutton's his freedom. |
