Carex castanea, chestnut sedge, collected by Theodore S. and Barbara A. Cochrane on June 23, 1994. Boreal forest-like woodland (Thuja occidentalis-1 dom., Betula papyrifera-2 dom., Populus tremuloides 3 dom.) on gentle slope bordering large white cedar swamp; groundlayer association: Pteridium aquilinum, Carex castanea, C. gracillima, C. granularis, C. pedunculata, Cyperipedium pubescens, Pyrola asarifolia, Geum rivale, and Populus balsamea seedlings. Loosely cespitose, shoot bases 1-4 centimeters apart; largest clump with 24 fertile culms plus 41 sterile shoots, 12.9 dm across. Occasional in understory, locally frequent in snowmobile trail. 31N 28E (not 24E as incorrectly shown on the label), Section 29 NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 North edge of Mud Lake State Wildlife Area, 800 ft.
