Revision as of 00:01, 10 April 2017

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 18:54 on 23 June 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

  • Again with MOS:YOU, the EMD F40PH hook should be reworded, to "that in Canada, ten dollars will buy an EMD F40PH diesel locomotive?" or somesuch third person wording. Perhaps since the catch is that the locomotive is on a bill the word "buy" shouldn't be used, so maybe "that in Canada, one can get an EMD F40PH diesel locomotive for ten dollars" would be better. I realize the hook is trying to be clever, but I really don't think jokes should come at the expense of encyclopedic tone. The Wicked Twisted Road (talk) 00:33, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • I think MOS:YOU can abide this idiomatic usage. DYK hooks are supposed to be catchy and fun, and this isn't a permanent part of the encyclopedia. Also, any use of "buy" would take us into factually misleading territory and should be avoided. Mackensen (talk) 00:58, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
      • I do agree that the priority should be to avoid factual errors, although the hook as it is now is deliberately misleading in a way, isn't it? It's a neat play on words, but I expect most people will take it literally, and if you read it like that it's not a true statement. But it's also possible I just have a poor sense of humor. The Wicked Twisted Road (talk) 01:59, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Christ taking leave of his Mother, second paragraph: "the painting is held at the National Gallery, London." Wouldn't "National Gallery in London" flow much better? — Kpalion(talk) 08:42, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • Anybody watching this? — Kpalion(talk) 13:11, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
      • Nope, just the crickets. And yes, I would agree, because that piped link to incorporate London is unnecessary and inaccurate; it's not called the "Nation Gallery, London", it's just called the "National Gallery". The Rambling Man (talk) 14:52, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
