Is it appropriate for a dab page (BLA) to include redlinks and external links? Illia Connell (talk) 00:21, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If an entry is redlinked then there should be a blue link in the description, and external links or references are not appropriate. I have changed the entry [1] per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Disambiguation pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:47, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Hypothetical situation

What would happen if there was a notable book or band or film or whatever called Main Page? Would they get a hatnote on the main page? --Jameboy (talk) 00:54, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like there's already a copy of "Main Page" at "Wikipedia Main Page", thus we could just repurpose the old page for the new article, disambiguation page, etc. That page should then have a dab to the Wikipedia Main Page, but not vice-versa. Many links would also need updating. StuRat (talk) 01:01, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia Main Page is one of 347 redirects to Main Page. It would be decided by consensus at the time. We cannot say what the result would be but I guess it would require a very notable topic to get support for a hatnote. By the way, there is a guy called William Main Page. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:11, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There's no reason set in stone why the landing page for the en.wikipedia.org website need be the mainspace article Main Page. It's been that way for a very long time, and there's never been a pressing need to move it - but if such a need arose we'd have a discussion and decide what to do. The content you see at Main Page shouldn't be in the article namespace at all, because it's not an article; Main Page dates from the dark times before namespaces. It's a portal, so if we were doing things fresh now, it'd quite possibly end up as portal:Main page instead. I doubt hardly any of our visitors, and few of our editors, would really notice (and I, who have been here nine years, had to go check to see that it was Main Page not Main page or Front Page or Home page). -- Finlay McWalterTalk 01:47, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Article translation

There is a biographical article in the German language portion of Wikipedia that would be an excellent article in English, since the subject is American. Is there a policy and a procedure on translating Wikipedia articles from one language to another and publishing the new translation? Thank you for your guidance. Stripper article/tip collection

When I came to the "Tip Collection" section of the "Stripper" article, I encountered a problem. The article says that to " crumple bills into a ball shape and throw them in the direction of the entertainer." is a from of tipping. I work as a stripper and can tell you that this is rude and inappropriate. I edited the page to say so, including that dancers may reprimand a customer who does this verbally or physically. I used appropriate language and terms and can tell you that this is accurate information.

My edit was removed while the original was left in the article. I made a second edit which was also removed. Please either remove the original comment, or better yet, allow my edit (or a similar edit) to follow it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.20.163.125 (talk) 03:29, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Resolved
While the second edit was poor form, it doesn't seem like the statement should remain in the article, as the behavior described is un-sourced and clearly wrong to anyone who's ever seen it. I'm sure a corroborating source could be found if someone really wants to argue that it's OK to chuck tips at someone on stage. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 04:00, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It was unsourced, and I don't care enough to try to see if a source exists, but I don't see why it wouldn't be considered a method (even if rude) of tipping. How dare they not stick their hands in a garter or their face in a pair of breasts to tip politely? I'm sure when the strippers physically reprimand the customer, they return that money that was so rudely given to them for the performance... --OnoremDil 04:08, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Don't abbreviate Wikipedia as Wiki! There are other wikis out there. Wikipedia is just one of them.
Articles on Wikipedia need to be notable. WP:BAND details the notability guidelines for (surprisingly enough) bands. Please read that. If your band does not satisfy those, then I'm afraid it's an inherent problem with the article that cannot be resolved. Kayau (talk · contribs) 15:07, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

PLEASE HELP! - by Curtaintoad -- continue

I want more rights please... I want:

PLEASE help me with this above. And can User:Yunshui please answer to this question first? Thanks, CURTAINTOAD! TALK! 09:00, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the short answer is no. Account creator is only ever granted to users who are identified to the Wikimedia Foundation and well experienced with the Account Creation Interface - as far can see, you've never done any work in this area. File mover rights are generally only granted to users who have considerable experience working with files - again, as far as I can tell, you don't yet have this (ten uploads (three of which have already had to be deleted) and 28 edits to the File namespace do not constitute sufficient experience).
Wikipedia isn't a hat-collecting contest; you don't gain any special consideration just because you have a long list of userrights. Calm down, take your time and just do some editing; if you do a lot of work that shows you need these rights and that you can be trusted with them, then they'll be granted, but we don't hand out userrights just because you want them. Sorry to be blunt, but there's currently just no visible evidence that you need these additional permissions to do your work here.
Finally, requests like this should be posted at Requests for permissions, using the correct format, not at the Helpdesk. Apart from anything else, most of the responders here are not administrators, and so couldn't grant you additional rights even if they wanted to. Yunshui  09:19, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Exact String Search?

I'm looking for pages which contain the string 'Alpha Alpha' using the Wikipedia Search page. Even when I put the search string in quotes (single or double doesn't matter) among the top 20 hits are the Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha, and Alpha Omega Alpha pages. I've checked each of those pages and the word Alpha doesn't occur twice in a row in any of them (In Alpha Omega Alpha, it doesn't even have Alpha as the first word, so the issue isn't that the title is counted in the search text). Is there any way to get *only* those pages with the word Alpha occurring twice in a row, or is this something where the best solution is google? Naraht (talk) 15:11, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Google is usually better. site:en.wikipedia.org "alpha alpha" -- Finlay McWalterTalk 15:21, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Alpha Kappa Alpha and Alpha Phi Alpha both contain the string "Alpha, Alpha", and both articles are therefore included in both Wikipedia and Google results on "Alpha Alpha". Your third link Alpha Omega Alpha is not anywhere in Wikipedia's results for me. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:24, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Improvement

    Greetings Reader,

I have a suggestion for you, which is say I am reading a wiki page on Pulse-code Modulation, there is link about sampling rate which redirects to another page. Instead of that when I move the cursor on it, it must display the 1st or important wordings about that link.

What happens is that when there is any new topic which is not known to us, we open that link in new tab, instead of it main information regarding the link must be displayed when the cursor is positioned on it. It saves time, possibility to forget the actually what we were reading.

    Hope you consider this suggestion.

Thank you for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mahantesh2012 (talk • contribs) 15:49, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

my new novel, Bones of Contention

Hi, I attempted to create a Wikipedia page for my new novel, Bones of Contention, using my full name as, Adeola Tope-Fagbolagun as Username. However I got this message that,

‘This page has been deleted. The deletion and move log for the page are provided below for reference. 15:49, 2 January 2013 JohnCD (talk | contribs) deleted page Adeola Tope-Fagbolagun (A7: Article about a real person, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject). I reckon there was something I did which wasn’t right. Would therefore be grateful for your advice. If not could I delete the record, as I don’t think it will be of any use if I ain’t getting it right.

Your assistance would be highly appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adeola Tope-Fagbolagun (talk • contribs) 18:07, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As was noted in other discussions above this one, we really, really, really, REALLY discourage autobiographical edits, including writing or editing articles about yourself, your works, your organizations and/or companies, your family, etc.; not least because of the difficulty in maintaining the mandatory neutral point-of-view. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:22, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing my companies page

Hi I work for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and have been tasked with updating our page. That being said I am completely inexperienced with editing wikis. It is my understanding that to upload our updated logo I must post a request here. Any help with changing the logo or good guides to editing would be much appreciated!

You should read WP:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide and Wikipedia:Image use policy. Ruslik_Zero 19:26, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, see your talk page, regarding your username. I realize this can be a frustrating experience, but you can help improve Wikipedia by providing information to update the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching article; its just that it can get a bit touchy for someone with a direct association with the subject. Your contributions are welcome, and other editors with more experience (than me) can provide assistance as far as procedures (etc.) are concerned. ~Thanks, ~Eric F 74.60.29.141 (talk) 21:05, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My suggestion is:   first, change your username ;  second, place {{help me}} on your new talk page ;  and then explain your situation to the responding editor(s). ~Thanks again, ~E : 74.60.29.141 (talk) 21:26, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have no doubt that Jake means well and is simply following the instructions of his supervisors, but he (and they) should be fully aware that saying the article is "my companies page" and "our page" is wrong. It is Wikipedia's page, so Jake's employer has absolutely no control or authority over it. (By the way, it's "company's", not companies.) Although Jake's account has been blocked because of the inappropriate name, he should follow the good advice by the administrator on his talk page: "Once you've got an account with an acceptable name, you are welcome to suggest improvements to the article on its talk page, as long as you fully disclose your own conflict of interest when you do so."[2] --76.189.103.146 (talk) 22:06, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Yes, and {{Admin help}} would have been a better suggestion (above). ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 22:25, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I uploaded a new image for you. It can't go on commons because the new one is copyright. The colour is off and it seems a little wide. Can you provide a link to a better image and I can replace it for you. File:Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching logo.png is the file.--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:50, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think I fixed it. Let us know if it is the correct image, size, shape, colour, etc. Very easy to fix in GIMP.--Canoe1967 (talk) 23:05, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Citing Emails

Is it possible to cite emails on Wikipedia? I got an email from a company and I would like to use it as a reference in an article.--Dom497 (talk) 20:12, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

E-mails are not a reliable source so cannot be used as references.--ukexpat (talk) 20:17, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(ec):Not directly. Only material publised in a reliable source can be cited, so in the case of emails they can only be used as sources if they have been published on a website, in a news article, book, etc. in which case you actually cite the book, newspaper, magazine article, web page... Roger (talk) 20:21, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    But its from the comapny.--Dom497 (talk) 20:34, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please take a look at the opening words of WP:RS#Overview: Articles should be based on reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. - personal, unpublished, e-mails do not meet that definition.--ukexpat (talk) 20:38, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The main problem with unpublished emails is verifiability. Wikipedia is based on already published content. Wikipedia:Verifiability says: "Other people have to be able to check that you didn't just make things up." I'm not accusing you of making it up but Wikipedia has thousands of contributors, many of them vandals or less than stellar, and articles are not signed. We once had a Template:Cite email but it violated policy and was deleted (on my nomination) at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2007 April 19#Template:Cite email. First, two thirds of the article has no inline citations at all. Secondly, most of the citations simply show that he has spoken at conferences: I have not looked at the sources, but I doubt whether most of them say more than that he was a speaker. Thirdly half the article is about the details of his sporting career as a boy: apart from being unreferenced, most of this information is simply inappropriate in an encyclopaedia article, since it does not appear to have anything to do with why he is notable (if he is). But the main thing is that the article does not contain the citations to significant coverage of the topic in multiple reliable sources independent of the subject which constitute notability for Wikipedia articles. This coverage may exist: but the article must directly say so, or it will be deleted. --ColinFine (talk) 15:33, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Forgive me for being blunt, but at the moment the draft reads like an advertisement/resume for the guy masquerading as an article.--ukexpat (talk) 15:44, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a page of a young author

    User:Pdhillon2/sandbox

    Hi

I am new with Wikipedia. I want to add a page on a very young author who was nominated for the Golden quill award. I have created it in my sandbox but how do I publish and add the page to Wikipedia?

    Kind Regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pdhillon2 (talk • contribs) 10:04, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In its current form the page would be deleted from article mainspace almost immediately; there are several issues you need to address before it can be "published".
Once these issues have been dealt with, the most sensible thing to do would be to submit the page to Articles for creation; to do this, place the code {{AFC submission}} at the top of the page, and an automated program will move it to AFC for you. Yunshui  10:14, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, you should place {{subst:submit}}on it when you are ready to have it reviewed. Mdann52 (talk) 13:17, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops; yes of course - same template, but the {{subst:submit}} will timestamp it correctly; thanks Mdann52. Yunshui  13:21, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    dates

hvad, gør skabelonen use my dates (month, year). --89.249.2.53 (talk) 10:33, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(Google translate: This is Danish for "what makes the template")
We don't have a template named "use my dates", only {{use mdy dates}} and {{use dmy dates}}. You can read about them by clicking those links. As to "what makes them", they were created by the Wikipedia editors listed on their history pages, and they are added to articles by Wikipedia editors who care about date formats. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:28, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect "gør" here means "does", rather than "makes", and the question means "what does the template do?" --ColinFine (talk) 15:36, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I adjusted the width of the red box. Now it doesn't go out of the screen to the right side (at least in my browser) anymore as it did before. Is that the appearance you sought? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 17:41, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    That's fantastic, thanks. Dougweller (talk) 18:38, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds odd. In which browser does it become more narrow when you increase [6] the width? For me in Firefox, it looked fine before but now it goes off the right side. Setting a high pixel width sounds like a bad idea because it goes off many narrow screens. Why not 100%? PrimeHunter (talk) 18:57, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In my browser (Safari), in this revision the red box is approximately 1/5 shorter on the right side than the other two boxes. After my edit it has the same width as the green and orange boxes. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 19:13, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm confused. First you said the red box went out of the screen to the right side before. Now you say it was shorter than the other boxes before. How wide are the other boxes for you? For me the other boxes filled the screen both before and after. The red box went from being narrower than the screen to wider than the screen. The width is set in absolute pixels instead of a percentage. That means the width relative to the screen will vary wildly between users. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:38, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think my head isn't completely here at the moment ^^. It never went out of the screen, it was just shorter than the screen width, so what I said in my first reply is not correct. I guess I need some sleep .... -- Toshio Yamaguchi 20:13, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Costa Concordia disaster

Hello, I am planning to break-out the wreck recovery and wreck site remediation on Costa Concordia disaster (see Talk:Costa Concordia disaster), since there will undoubtedly be an explosion of editing once the salvage crew starts to attempt to roll the wreck and re-float it. However, some years ago, when I merged two parallel (duplicate) articles, one editor vociferously accused me of copyright violation (I did a cut-and-paste from the duplicate article into the primary one, clean-up edit of the merged primary article and created a re-direct from the duplicate to the primary). I was baffled, since this is all within Wikipedia. I imagine that he/she was concerned about attribution of prior edits. Is this an issue? Is there any basis for concern about copyright violation in this situation? More specifically, is there any way to accomplish a cleavage of the wreck recovery and site remediation section while transferring past edit history? I doubt this is possible since past history is for the whole page, but maybe there is a way to transfer edit histories for the sections that are moved? I assume that a cut-and-paste operation would accomplish this, unless there is a more sophisticated tool or protocol. Please advise if there any rules or procedures that I should be aware of.
    Regards, Enquire (talk) 19:12, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cut-and-paste is not permitted, because the edit history is lost. What is done in a case such as this (and this requires the assistance of an admin) is that the old version is moved to the new name and deleted from the old version; then the old version is restored under the old name. The result is two articles with different names, each with an identical edit history, for proper attribution. (And yes, there is a copyright issue, because a cut-and-paste loses all those edits and the attributions thereof; while the process I'm describing does not.) --Orange Mike | Talk 19:39, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)I suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. We can't don't typically split the history during a normal article split, but we can use the templates to provide attribution. The template syntax is tricky, so expect a bit of trial and error. (edit conflict) The original article must be credited with a link when content is copied or moved. See Wikipedia:Splitting#Procedure and Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Correcting info

I cannot seem to correct some information, nor can I email Wikipedia using the address provided; here is the email I tried to send with the correction:

The page lists Bonnie's first appearance as 1969; that is not correct. Bonnie was on an episode of The High Chaparral in 1968. She played the daughter of a half-breed Indian, played by Robert Loggia. Here is an excerpt from The High Chaparral web page: Character Highlights: Good episode for Mano fans since we get to see him without a shirt here, if only briefly. There is more tension here between Mano and Buck than usual with Buck taking an uncharacteristically harsh stand against Tina as a "breed". Mano is charming as usual, but also particularly sweet and compassionate. There is an unintentionally humorous scene where Rebel (Buck’s horse) very nearly wrecks the scene by head butting Mano while he is delivering his lines. Cameron Mitchell saves the scene by ignoring it and getting Henry’s line out of him anyway. Robert Loggia does an excellent job as the evil Chio and a young Bonnie Bedelia is also very convincing as the intense but confused Tina.

Fundamental Improvement Needed in Wikipedia Article on term "Mulatto"

    January 11, 2013

    Dear Wikipedia,

The term "Mulatto", was originated by Spanish Arab conquerors in South America, as a derogatory term used to refer to people born from sexual reproduction between Spanish Arab conquerors, Black Negro slaves, and Indigenous Indians. The term is derived from the term "mule",an animal which is a combination of a horse and a donkey. The term was intended by it's Spanish Arab Conqueror creators, as a derogatory, and comedic term, comparing the people born from sexual reproduction between Spanish Arab conquerors, Black Negro slaves, and Indigenous Indians, to animals, with a clear intention that these people should be considered less than human, or of a class of people that are not considered to be full humans and therefore should not have full participation and full legal rights in society. There is a parallel between the term "mulatto" and the term "nigger". The terms are equally derogatory.

Additionally, the term "mulatto", carries with it a connotation of slavery, a connotation of deprivation of human rights and legal rights, and a subordinate status in society.

I feel your current article does not reflect this strongly enough. It is not immediately clear from reading the article that the term "mulatto" is a derogatory term, carrying connotations of slavery, deprivation of human rights and legal rights, and a subordinate status in society. The term has an equivalent derogatory connotation to the term "nigger", and this should be clear in your article.

Regards.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.134.4.162 (talk • contribs)

Whether these assertions are accurate or not (I'd have to do some research), this should be discussed at Talk:Mulatto, not here. Have you done so? --Orange Mike | Talk 22:02, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What we certainly should not do is to enter into protracted discussion here about sources such as this one, which offers an interesting comparison; when Britain ruled India, Anglo-Indian marriages were actually encouraged by the British East India Company, who "would even pay a sum for every child born of these cross-cultural unions". A century later, it was Indians who stigmatised and stereotyped the offspring, not the British (or so the article implies). --Demiurge1000 (talk) 22:15, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Samuel Insull page and login issues

I have tried repeatedly to log in, register, etc. but nothing I do seems to work. This is very disappointing, especially since I send donations to Wikipedia on a regular basis. So, 1) WHY won't your site accept ANY of my credentials, whether I log in as an existing user or attempt to create a new user account??? This makes no sense, and comes across to me as being very rude and dismissive. Wikipedia is perhaps not interested in allowing its members to establish accounts or to help with content. I am surprised by this, as I thought that this was intended to be a contributive site. But that is not what I have experienced. 2) The image on the Samuel Insull page is very poor. I adjusted the image and then attemped to post this new file to Wikipedia in hopes that you would replace the very poor image with a corrected one after reviewing it. But nothing I have tried will work. What is wrong with Wikipedia? Don't you value the contributions of your readers, especially when all we wish to do is help you??? I don't understand this. And now I see that there is no way to upload an image to this message, so you will still not likely see what I attempted to do on your behalf. I don't get it. Don't you want your own readers to support your pages, and to help you with better files and content??? Please respond (and I won't be surprised if I hear nothing back). We definitely want people to create accounts and help us. We have 47,540,658 accounts and Special:Log/newusers shows several accounts are created every minute. We have a better chance to say what goes wrong for you if you tell the username and say what happens when you try. You can also ask for an account at Wikipedia:Request an account instead of creating it yourself. Note that both usernames and passwords are case sensitive. We also want people to upload images but only if the image has a license allowing it. Unlike many other websites we care about copyright. Many people upload copyrighted images we have to delete. Copyright concerns complicate our upload procedure and we don't allow unregistered users to upload. In addition, uploads here at Wikipedia requires an autoconfirmed account (one that is at least 4 days old and has made 10 edits). At Wikimedia Commons at http://commons.wikimedia.org new accounts can upload images right away and these images can also be used in Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:09, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. This is the help desk of Wikipedia, a project where volunteers from all over the world collaborate to build an online encyclopedia. Please consider asking your question at the reference desk by clicking here and selecting an appropriate category. Click on that category and then do the same over there as you did here and ask your question again. This help desk is only for answering question about editing Wikipedia. The volunteers at the reference desk will do their best to answer knowledge question like yours. Also, if posting there, please remember to type four tildes at the end of your post like this: ~~~~. This will produce your IP address and a timestamp and is usually considered a good practice here. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask. Best of luck. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 18:05, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do I put a link to prove what I added to a page is true? Says "Citation Needed", but can't figure out how to add a link for proof. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Re105f (talk • contribs) 18:54, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"[citation needed]" is a link to Wikipedia:Citation needed which includes a link to Wikipedia:Citing sources, but see also Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners for a simpler page. You don't have to get it perfect. If the source is online then just make sure it's reliable and the reference has a working link to it. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:05, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted say that I think the reference to Dustin Hermanson, a former MLB player, comes across as rude and sort of makes light of a very successful career. I think words like bounced around, and replaced and let go take away from the positive aspects of his career. Is it possible to rewrite the article that highlights the key points in his career, his personality and all the good charitable things he has done as a result of his career? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.64.202.250 (talk) 20:46, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Request for article creation

I was intending to request an article for creation (here) which seemed like a reasonable and simple thing. However, a little digging reveals that this particular request is more complex than anticipated. Article:

"Baby Mine" ~ (from Dumbo; Music by Frank Churchill, Lyric by Ned Washington)

There is no problem with notability, for one thing there are many articles that would link to it; and it was nominated for an Academy Award (1942), and a Grammy (1997, cover version); and there have been several other cover versions (notably by: Bette Midler, Alison Krauss, Chloë Agnew, Bonnie Raitt) — (Midler version featured: Beaches (soundtrack)) ... etc.

The first problem is that there already are two movies by that name; and there are some links erroneously linking to Baby Mine ← (which doesn't have a dab page, although there is also a play, coal mine, etc., by that name). This relates to the second problem, in that I was thinking about putting in appropriate red-links, but wasn't sure what to use; perhaps Baby Mine (song)? Also, I am unsure how/what to request for the article title, etc.

    ~Thanks for any suggestions and assistance, ~Eric F 74.60.29.141 (talk) 20:46, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The relevant guideline for this situation is WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Since I am not very familiar with the subject area, I don't know whether one of the three topics can be considered primary or not. If that is not the case, then I'd move Baby Mine to Baby Mine (1917 film), make Baby Mine a dab page and link the articles Baby Mine (1917 film), Baby Mine (1928 film) and Baby Mine (song) from it. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 21:26, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I believe, as an IP, I am unable to do that sort of thing. ~Eric the IP 74.60.29.141 (talk) 22:02, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I turned Baby Mine into a dab page containing a redlink for the article you want to create. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 22:22, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks!   I submitted it (at 'here' link above). ~ A related question:   Is there some way to find out which articles link to a redlink? (I lost count after about 25). ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 04:28, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, simply click on the redlink and then select What links here from the toolbox on the left. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 13:45, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know if this was asked previously somewhere, but there is a big empty box in the top left corner of the page when I open Wikipedia. Every page. This page, my watchlist, article pages. I can see the box itself while in Internet Explorer. While in Firefox, I don't see the box, but I see a gap in space that is the size of the box (while looking at the same page in Interent Explorer). Lost article

I uploaded an article one day ago, but cant find it! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Samy elbeblawy (talk • contribs) 21:51, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Samy. The account you posted this message under has no edits other than this one to any language Wikipedia, and no deleted edits to this one. This leaves three possibilities:
    1. You created an article at a different language Wikipedia and it was deleted;
    2. You were logged in under a different account when you created the article (in which case tell us what the account name was); or (probably most likely)
    3. You never actually saved the page you worked on.
This third possibility can happen in various ways. For example, if you work on a page for a lengthy period of time before saving, when you click page it will say something like "loss of session data. the page was not able to be saved." Another is that people sometimes click the show preview button by accident instead of the save page button and then see the page's content as if it was saved when it was only a preview. If you did try to create a page under this account and here, I hope you saved your proposed edit somewhere offline (which is a good idea for any large edit, until after you're sure it "takes"). Other than that, and barring the unlikely possibility that you still have the window or tab open and it's stored in your computer's memory so that hitting the "back" button will reach it, the material is unretrievable.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:07, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see your account was created 10 minutes before posting here. There is a fourth possibility: That you created a page without logging in, possibly at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Unregistered users cannot create "live" articles in the encyclopedia but they can make suggested articles for review. If you tell a pagename then we can search for it. You can also try to log out and click Special:MyContributions to see edits made by your current IP address without being logged in, but your IP may have changed since the page was created. We can't tell which article you are talking about (this IP has no previous contributions), so I can't give you a definite answer, but probably not: if there is only one independent reliable reference to be found, the subject probably does not meet the criterion of notability, and so cannot have an article. --ColinFine (talk) 16:25, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It appears under the terms of service at the other wiki site, that when you posted material there you gave them the copyright and they do not have a free copyright license like we do. So your submission of this material here was, though in good faith, an apparent copyright infringement.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 07:44, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    A. A. Allen "healing evangelist" article: Major problems

I believe that the article on "healing evangelist" A. A. Allen has been so fraught with problems because of lack of objectivity in editing that it should be deleted. It appears that various individuals have attempted to either edit to say that he had an alcohol problem and died because of alcoholism, or that this was not the case. The article has gone back and forth like a ping-pong ball. I attempted to not take sides, but to simply insert evidence suggesting that the issue of the cause of death might be more complex than what the papers said, which was that he died of alcoholism. I also said that the coroner's report, coupled with more up-to-date information on prescription drugs, suggests that prescription drugs for knee pain may have been the actual cause of death, or at least a major factor. I also named the drugs involved. ALL of that information has been removed, and we are back to the "Allen was an alcoholic; he died because of alcoholism" stance. That will probably shortly be replaced once again by the "No, he didn't" stance, and then back to the "Yes, he did" stance. I give up. I don't know of any way that this article can be maintained as a community-edited wiki in any manner that even begins to approach objectivity. For whatever reason, even 43 years after his death, it seems that everyone has an opinion about this man and about his death. I don't think that those opinions belong in a wiki, but those opinions have dominated the editing of this article for years. I know of no way to have that not continue to be the case. Mtnbuilder (talk) 13:12, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

But the fact that he died of liver failure induced by a heavier alcohol consumption is supported by multiple reliable sources. Do you have reliable sources that say otherwise? I have not noticed any in your version of the article. Ruslik_Zero 16:35, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with graph chronology for next UK election

Ok, so this page has always had a chart but due to the continuous updates with the addition of new polls the chart needs updating every once in a while. This has meant that there are now an abundance of unwanted/out of date files on wikipedia, which should really belong in the chronology of the original chart. As you can see from the chronology all is well for the chronology of that page until it stops at May 2012, the final update.

The next image to be uploaded was a chart that covered just 2012, this chart and the original chart were used simultaneously for a period. That is until the data for 2011 and 2012 was updated to the 100px|talk page to accommodate the new format (due to the addition of UKIP's column). This is a recent occurance. I was the one that uploaded the new data a few days ago, I also created a new interim chart to see us through until we could get a new version of the favoured chart to cover May 2010-Present Day.

A similar dummy chart exists, this preceded my chart, it was made in error, I discovered the lines were too thick for interpretation, therefore this image needs to be deleted, as it is in effect a duplicate. I do not know how to delete this image, or suggest deletion, can someone help/delete it for me? I'll see to it that there are comments on that page.

Since my chart was uploaded, I have uploaded the data to the 100px|talk page, for User:Wavehunter to update the chart that preceded mine to include the data from 2010 and 2011. The reason for this is that Wavehunter's chart was the one that had consensus. In the meantime Impru20 has uploaded an improved version of my graph. Since then Wavehunter has uploaded his updated chart which is now (by consensus) the current chart.

To summarise what I need help with doing/for someone to do for me:

All of these listed graphs need to be added to the chronology of the original chart and not be as separate pages. In chronological order the follow should be added to the chronology:

    • (or deleted)
    • (current)

Note: Please do not include: the chart that covered just 2012 as it is useful on other pages and does not fit in the chronology (as does not include 2010or11!

I would really appreciate someone doing this for me, as I am likely to make a mistake with it being multiple edits and my 1st time doing this. Could you also leave a note explaining how to do this for future reference on the talk page for the benefit of myself and future editors.

    Many ThanksSheffno1gunner (talk) 17:20, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you click the image on the image page then you only see the image, and at its original size. Does that answer your question? PrimeHunter (talk) 22:40, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Jerry Lee Lewis has two surviving daughters

On the Jerry Lee Lewis bio, he was listed as having 7 wives with children with different ones. It is reported that with his 4th wife, Jaren Gunn, that they had a daughter which is correct. Her name is Lori Lee Lewis. Later, there is a mention of "two of his surviving children's names". They omitted Lori's name. She is also still living and she has a daughter, Lauren Leigh Lewis Lancaster, who is Jerry Lee's only grandchild. All of this information is well-documented with birth certificates (Jerry Lee is listed on Lori's birth certificate very clearly), family photos, and various court records. There was a major article in the Memphis newspaper (the Commercial Appeal on June 27, 2010)that presented much of this information. Lori should be mentioned by name as one of the surviving children and Lauren should be mentioned as his only grandchild. Thank you. Wayne Lancaster (talk) 19:00, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I converted your external link to a wikilink. On a quick look, it appears that the band probably does pass the test for notability, assuming that at least some of the sources you refer to are to be considered reliable sources. And despite your conflict of interest, the article is written in neutral language, so well done (but it would be best if you did not edit the content any further, as advised by the "conflict of interest" page I linked to). The main problem with it is that it has no inline citations at all, so the reader cannot see how to verify any information in the article. Once you have added citations for everything in the article (and removed all information for which you have no reference), I advise you to submit it for review, by adding {{subst submit}} at the top. --ColinFine (talk) 20:15, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WRONGFUL DISMISSAL OF DUANE HITCHINGS SITE on Wikipedia concerning a false accusation of "gross copyright" information.

    WIKIPEDIA

Hitchings Enterprises Hitchings Productions ~ DuaneSongs ~ EDM Artist

              Website: Reverbnation ~ Duane Hitchings/DigitalHitch

    January 13, 2013

    Sir/Ms,

My name is Duane Hitchings. I am a successful songwriter has won a Grammy and hit records for my efforts. I have sent two letters to you folks about YOUR CLAIM that I was NOT a co-writer of the song “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy”. I AM a co-writer of “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy. I also sent copyright proof that I was in fact a co-writer. I was left off the credits by either clerical error or another reason which was a misunderstanding between Rod and Carmine Appice for – Rod’s drummer at the time – both good friends of mine. I went to MySpace recently and found the song was taken off my song list with , even on MySpace. I sold part of my publishing years ago to Full Keel Music, and trust me, they would not have given my HALF of the monies they gave me if “Sexy” was not part of my publishing ! It is the “flagship” of my catalog.

This is what bothers me. I wrote to a young lady 3 years ago about correcting this mistake because my name was taken off Wikipedia because of “gross misrepresentation “ concerning “Sexy”! Of course I was angry but understood the confusion, SO, I wrote 2 letters with proof of my co-writing Sexy. There was no response and even though I followed EXACT instructions by her concerning a form I was to fill ! I co-wrote this song in 1979. I missed standing on the Stage with Rod and Carmine for ASCAP song of the year because of this confusion. I assure you, I have received every single royalty check. I also have the paper that was drawn up by my attorney and Carnie Appice , that I was indeed the co-writer of the music and Rod finished the melody and , of course the lyrics.

This was embarrassed at first until Rod mentioned to many people and in interviews that, indeed I and Carmine were the co-writers.

My complaint to you folks, even though sending you two ( a LONG time ago ) letters and proof of copyright, I am still banned from Wikipedia and now this false information has spread to MySpace. The statement of yours of my “gross misrepresentation” on my part is libel if proven ONCE AGAIN that I , indeed co-wrote “Sexy” !

I am not threatening anyone but PLEASE answer me and let’s get this straight ! I went on to write 3 more hits with Rod - “Young Turks”, “Infatuation” and “Crazy’ Bout Her” . Certainly, Arnold Stiefel ( Rod's Manager ) AND Rod would have put a stop to my claims immediately if I were lying ! Arnold is Rod’s manager and I know him and Rod VERY well. AND , I might add, any record company takes forever too change mistakes on credits. They would have to reprint the album info. One would think after Warners made MANY, MANY MILLIONS, they could at least afford to change credits with a new printing of “Blondes Have More Fun -, the album that “sexy was on ------ 10 YEARS LATER !! To a writer such as myself, it is VERY important as you can imagine !

Please, would you do something about this soon ! I WILL write ANOTHER form or letter to you folks if I have too but as you can understand, I am very frustrated even though I have given you proof and no action has been taken by Wikipedia. I know my last complaint was 5-6 years ago but the MySpace comment finally got me to get this straightened out. Thank you !

    Regards,

    Duane Hitchings

By the way, my name is ALL OVER Wikipedia, just dial in my name. I also belong to all the important and popular musicians sites on the internet. PLEASE , let's get this resolved ! I know you folks are busy but this has gone on way too long and it is embarrassing ! Thank you and thank you for your obvious hard work with this site ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captainhit (talk • contribs) 20:06, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Duane. You seem to be talking about two quite separate issues, both of which I can see have been frustrated by. I am not going to talk about the copyright issue, which I am not knowledgeable on. But for the content issue: the problem is that Wikipedia works on the criterion of verifiability, not truth. This may seem perverse, but the article I just linked to explains why. Put simply: it doesn't matter how many letters you write: if a reader tomorrow or next week or ten years from now sees something written in an article, they need to be able to find a reliable published source that confirms it, otherwise they have no way of knowing whether the information is correct or was a mistake, or was inserted by a vandal. As long as no reliable published sources say that you wrote that song, then Wikipedia, by its rules, should not say you did, and anybody who removes a claim that you did is entirely within their rights. I can see that this would be upsetting for you, but to meet our rules, you need to get a reliable source to say you did before that information can be validly added to a Wikipedia article. (By the way, like the vast majority of people who reply on this page, I am not an employee of Wikimedia foundation, or even an Administrator of Wikipedia: I am just an editor like you). --ColinFine (talk) 20:33, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We have this listed as released in late 1978 so if you co-wrote it in 1979 something has gone wrong somewhere. How much money would you owe Jorge Ben Jor, by the way? Britmax (talk) 20:50, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently not much doubt over the fact that Hitchings co-wrote the song [9], [10], whenever it was. I've added it to the relevant article, although I couldn't readily discern whether his name had ever been there. It's there now anyway, with a ref. Can't clarify which co-writer may or may not have plagiarised. All water under the bridge, I'm guessing. Bretonbanquet (talk) 20:59, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

shouldn't this be out of copyright?

I would like to use this image in the article Sacred Cod of Massachusetts, but it is uploaded here as being a fair use image. Shouldn't it be well out of copyright as it was designed in 1776 and even the current seals of New Hampshire just have an "insignia" warning. You are correct in that you can use it; works made before 1923 are automatically free from copyright. I tried to find a similar seal to give you an example but was horrified to find that almost all of them have the wrong copyright tags! Some even have {{PD-user}}, and I'm pretty sure none of the seals were designed by Wikipedia users! Intelligentsium 20:32, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on the statement. See the comments given at Template:Citation_needed under the sections for "when not to use" and "how to respond. RudolfRed (talk) 21:08, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there is a specific agreed upon timeframe for that, so it is difficult to give an exact answer. In general, anything needs to be attributable to a published source per Wikipedia:No original research. Per WP:BURDEN material lacking a reliable source supporting it may be removed. However, removing a statement for which a reliable source might reasonably be found might be seen as disruptive by other editors. Is there a specific tagged statement you think should be removed? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 21:11, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have restored the submission boxes you removed in [11]. Please don't remove them. You can resubmit for a new review by clicking "When you are ready to resubmit, click here" in the second box. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:33, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    TOC empty space

Is there a way to minimize the empty space left beside the TOC? In one article I used a TOC:Right formatting, which minimized the blank space in my screens. However, another editor complained that for his screen it was the opposite. I couldn't find anything like wrap around or anything else.--99.159.17.33 (talk) 21:54, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This generally shouldn't be done. Empty space to the right of the TOC is OK but see Help:Section#Floating the TOC. Browsers and window widths can react differently to layout of web pages. If a TOC is very long with many subsections then you could consider Help:Section#Limiting the depth of the TOC. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:28, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The reason being is that I was voted (by all the other coaches and team captains) to be the Budweiser Rookie of the year in 1989. I played for the following teams;

    Portsmouth Warriors youth team - 1986 - 1987 London Ravens youth team - 1988 London Ravens - 1989 - 1990 - Won Budweiser Rookie of the Year 1989

    Harper college, Illinois, Chicago, USA - 1991 - 1994.

Regards, Paul McAuslan (formally Mellis) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mike Webster52 (talk • contribs) 22:00, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for asking here first. If you refer to Category:English players of American football then it's a category. Categories can only contain Wikipedia articles. There doesn't appear to be an article about you so you cannot be added to the category. Wikipedia:Autobiography says to avoid writing an article about yourself.
