Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

Please create a redirect for me

I'm an IP address (and I wish to stay an IP address). Could a kind soul please create the following simple redirect:

Opium clipper should contain #REDIRECT Clipper#Opium clipper , analogous to what I have done at tea clipper.

Thanks! 128.59.181.223 (talk) 02:26, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of Interest

Hi - I work for a company that created an article about itself a few years ago. The article is labeled as being "written like an advertisement" (which is true) and asks for someone to re-write it from a neutral point of view.

I have monitored this for a few months, and it seems no one has re-written the article. I figured this would be the case as we're a small non-profit.

As an employee, I could potentially have a conflict of interest and have read the entry on this. Given that no one in the general public has re-written the article, I'm wondering whether it would be helpful and/or appropriate for me to.

Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.4.5.200 (talk) 07:19, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can you tell us the name of the article? -- John of Reading (talk) 07:32, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It would still be best for you to put your proposed text on the article's talk page. If you are a 'small non-profit' it is quite likely that you do not meet the notability requirements anyway, so your first priority should be finding the multiple independent reliable sources which you will need if you are to establish that it is notable. --ColinFine (talk) 08:32, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Correcting a citation in a reference list

In the article Riverside County, California, footnote #9 is a dead link. It should be corrected to http://www.riverside.courts.ca.gov/address.htm. However, I do not know how to correct a citation that is part of a reference list. Could someone please help? Thanks. Sinecostan (talk) 08:30, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The content of the link appears where it is used, not where it is displayed. Pick the '^' next to the link and it takes you to where it used in the page - then edit that section. --ColinFine (talk) 08:34, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article on user-page vs. Wikipedia-article

I translated my german-userpage article (de:Benutzer:Radh/Cold Turkey Press) on my english-wp userpage, User:Radh/Cold Turkey Press, not realising that there already exists Cold Turkey Press. Who can help?--Radh (talk) 09:36, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not exactly sure what you mean? You want to replace the existing article with your article? - CETTALK 10:07, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Basically yes, but would also like to keep the history.--Radh (talk) 13:05, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Updated, but someone could revert it eventually (not that I see any reason for that), if so, discuss your changes on the article's talk page. Cheers - CETTALK 17:35, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, will do that.--Radh (talk) 23:10, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ranvir Shorey

Hi,

I'm referring to the Wikipedia page for "Ranvir Shorey". I'm disagree that Ranvir Shorey has acted in "Once Upon a time in Mumbai" movie. The police inspectre was Randeep Singh Hooda. Can you please change the detail and advise?

Feel free to contact me if you need any other information to proceed with my request.

Sandboxes

Are sandboxes allowed as sub-pages of article talk pages or are they only allowed under user pages? If it's not allowed under the article's talk page, are we allowed to create sandboxes under a WikiProject? I'm referring a situation where a number of editors wish collaborate on an extensive re-write of an article but don't want to do it directly on the "live" article itself as it could at times be very messy and "half baked" - while we figure out things like section structure etc. Roger (talk) 14:51, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, that's not a problem. It's usually best to do that as a sub-talk page though (something like Talk:Stuff/Sandbox), just to lessen the chance a reader stumbles on it. TNXMan 15:01, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Letting someone else do your homework does not help you learn how to solve such problems.
Please attempt to solve the problem yourself first. You can search Wikipedia or search the Web.

Problem with splitting off of references into paragraphs, by sorting it with ref group

Resolved

-- ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫ T 08:42, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

hello,

i want to sort the references into paragraphs: Charts and certifications, Cover versions, and Other. As you can see here, I can't do that. I red MoS of footnotes, I did the same what I red but it doesn't go! Can you help me please?-- ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫ T 17:11, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That won't work— within |refs= anything not enclosed in is ignored by the Cite extension. You need to create separate groups like:

Then invoke the in-text citation with

Now, this will show the in-text citation as Charts and certifications 1, which you probably don't want so you should just use "chart" or something simple. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:05, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Protection

Resolved

Is it possible to protect a page so that only only one user (and of course the admins) can edit it? If so then how do I go about requesting such a protection? Fly by Night (talk) 20:10, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No emphatically not. See WP:OWN. --ColinFine (talk) 20:20, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) There is no way to protect a page so that only one user can edit it. Pages can be semi-protected (only auto-confirmed users may edit it) or fully protected (only admins can edit it). You can learn read about protection at WP:PROTECT and request page protection at WP:RPP. Pages are generally only protected against vandalism or edit warring. If you are going to request protection for a different reason take a look at WP:OWN first. Cheers, D•g Talk to me/What I've done 20:27, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You misunderstand both my question and my motives. I am fully aware of WP:OWN and WP:RPP. (Just check my contributions!) I had the idea to move my signature to a user subpage and then to transclude that subspage with every signature. That way, any change of signature would be rolled out across all of my signed posts. My signature is protected, but has a limited number of characters. I have seen admins' pages that are fully protected, and that would exactly serve my purpose if I happened to be an admin too. Where is my signature saved? Fly by Night (talk) 21:51, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c x 2) I'm afraid that's explicitly forbidden at WP:SIG#NT, for the reasons explained there. -- John of Reading (talk) 22:02, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. No worries. Thanks a lot. Fly by Night (talk) 22:06, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"It is not spam, it is factually correct": these are not mutually exclusive. In Wikipedia, at least, spam is any unwanted advertising, irrespective of its correctness. --ColinFine (talk) 23:20, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The 1975 film "Tommy"

A slight amendment is needed I think, as I just watched the film and during it Ann-Margret works in a factory, and wikipedia says she is filling bombs with ball bearings....ahem, they are pinballs, of course..Thanx Woo —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.67.170.100 (talk) 03:18, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please be bold and make the change to the plot section yourself. Please state your reason for the change in the edit summary field when you make this edit, which will make it far less likely that you'll be reverted.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:40, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Pinballs and certain ball bearings are identical in appearance; the edit would serve no purpose. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:56, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Huh? Of course it makes a difference.--SPhilbrickT 13:45, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If we don't explicitly know that they are pinballs rather than ball bearings (and I think it's a major leap to think that pinballs rather than ordinary ball bearings would be used in a military application), then I believe that such an insertion into the article is not only pointless but original research as well. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:00, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Obviously it cannot simply be added without a reliable source, but with a source, it seems quite apropos.--SPhilbrickT 17:27, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How to delete a page?

If the entity the page provides information about does not wish to hold a wikipedia page is there a method for deleting the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.166.244.245 (talk) 07:17, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We have a number of deletion processes, and you can read about them here. However, no single entity - including the subject of an article - owns any piece of Wikipedia content, so it's not simply the case that the subject can necessarily have the article deleted. What we can do is remove material that isn't cited to good-quality third-party sources, and we are particularly sensitive to the need for biographies of living persons to be well-cited, neutral, accurate, and compliant with our notability requirements. If you let us know which page you are talking about we can advise about suitable courses of action. Gonzonoir (talk) 07:35, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

About open proxy

I have to use open proxy, which by the way fails to transfer https traffic, sometimes to read and edit Wikipedia, but Wikipedia bans edits from behind proxies. I read carefully about the policies and have no clue why registered user cannot edit through a proxy. After all, if a registered user is a vandal, you can just suspend the account without knowing the IP address of his or her computer, can't you?--Netheril96 (talk) 10:29, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia's policy on open proxies is located here. The "rationale" section is what you need - basically, open proxies make it too difficult to catch vandals. TNXMan 15:06, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The "rationale" doesn't sound rational to me. I mean you need IP addresses to track anonymous edits, but a registered user cannot hide his/her identity even behind a proxy as long as he/she logs in. Why don't just disallow IP users to edit?--Netheril96 (talk) 16:51, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Incorect links

The instances when I click on a link within an article and I’m redirected to an advertising site are become more frequent.

I assume you are aware of this problem.

Please resolve this problem as quickly as possible as currently it almost doubles the time we have to spend researching a subject via your normally very reliable pages. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Watchman2511 (talk • contribs) 18:38, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia links should not lead to advertisements. Please be sure you are viewing the Wikipedia site, not a site that mirrors Wikipedia's content and adds advertisements. You can visit [1], which is our homepage. Your computer may also be infected with malware that pops up advertisements on (normally) ad-free sites. TNXMan 18:45, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c)I'm quite surprised at this, and hope you will provide some examples. I don't suggest for a second that it cannot happen - it is easy for people to add links to advertising sites, it happens everyday, and there are many editors spending considerable time removing such links, but when you say "it almost doubles the time we have to spend researching" you imply some substantial portion of links within articles are to advertising sites. Do you mean footnotes or wikilinks (words in blue). I would guess the proportion of footnotes that could be viewed as advertising might get to a few per cent, but I would guess that blue-linked words leading to an advertising site are quite rare - a fraction of a per cent at best (I've clicked on thousands of such links, and the next one that is an advertising site will be the first such example for me.) Is there any chance you are using a mirror of Wikipedia that does allow advertising? If you can post examples it would be very helpful.--SPhilbrickT 18:48, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Change in Ronald McNair page

Dear Wikipedia,

I just changed the page on Ronald McNair. He received a B.S. in engineering physics from North Carolina A&T State University and not a B.S. in physics.

This information can be verified by the registrar of our university. Can you let me know if you need anything else to make this information valid for publication?

Thank you.

The information needs to be verifiable in reliable sources. This means that the sources need to have already been published; unfortunately we can't simply take your word for it. It's also usually preferred that the source is from a third party, unassociated with the subject (and thus with no reason to provide inaccurate information casting the subject in an overly positive or negative light). My Article

HI. . . This is my first article. I am writing it about a noteworthy musician, instructor, businessman, etc. and all-around good person, who I want the masses to know about. I'd appreciate any guidance that will help me with formatting or whatever else I need to know, so that this article gets published.

Thank you for any help and/or advice given to me.

Wikipedia requires not just that the subject of an article be noteworthy, but that he be notable, and that reliable independent sources have already written about him. See Reliable sources. Looking at User:D.MauriceMarshall/ROSS CARNEGIE: A LEGEND IN OUR TIME, which I assume is the article you're referring to, it's written in a very enthusiastic, promotional tone, which is not appropriate for an encyclopaedia. Try to tone it down to a neutral point of view, make sure everything you write is referenced, and avoid WP:weasel words. Also see Wikipedia:Your first article. Good luck. I see Orange Mike has speedy deleted your draft from your userspace using criterion G11 - "unambiguous advertising or promotion". G11 does indeed apply to userspace as well as articlespace, although in practice inappropriate articles are usually given a bit more leeway in a user sandbox space, to allow the creator time to improve them. I can't see the deleted text, but I can only assume it must have been unsalvageably promotional and unencyclopaedic to attract such a summary speedy deletion. If you still want to create an article about this individual, I would advise you to read the advice others have bluelinked in their responses above, and use the article wizard. I would also point out that Wikipedia is absolutely not the right place for letting "the masses know about" someone, no matter how talented, nice or special they are. Wikipedia is for articles about people who have already received substantial coverage in reliable published sources. If Mr. Carnegie has had such coverage, you need to cite it in your article. If he hasn't, he's not a suitable article subject for this encyclopaedia. Karenjc 11:39, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As you might deduce from the title, it was indeed unsalvageable: a hagiography and an ad for the guy's courses. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:26, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have written the content for an article in a word document which has all the hyperlinks ( for the references). Now when I put this text in wiki edit page, all my links are gone, all I see is just a plain text version. Is there any way when I copy the text from my word to wiki editor, then my hyperlinks for the text also get copied?

Unless you used some kind of special program, you'd just have to type your stuff in wiki markup (i.e., using link for internal links, bold for bold text, etc.). Hope this helps! --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 02:05, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

HOW TO EDIT "Pablo Picasso"

You would use the template Edit protected on the talk page of the article and then provide what you wanted added to the article. At that point, someone would come along and apply your edit, if they thought it was a good edit. Dismas|(talk) 03:51, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Use a small seed drill, or sow by hand. Let blight and beetle do their worst. The most susceptible seedlings will die. Mark the most resistant with a brightly painted stick. These may look susceptible in the early breeding cycles but that's ok. They will be more resistant than all the others. Pull out all the others. Let the bees cross-pollinate all the selected plants. If Colorado beetles are likely to devour the plants before they set fruit, either hand-pick off the egg custers and beetles or protect with Bt or natural pyrethrum. Practical Joke

Hello, Please take a look at my user page and my talk-page.I have created a banner called You have new message.I have used it for completely harmless purpose. It just itself redirects to Practile Joke article. It is nothing more that a small funny prank.Though, User:Goodvac removed it.I think he means that I have misused the Wikipedia Interference. But, I have not any such intention.I love that banner-trick very much and wants to keep it.Please help me.Max Viwe | Wanna chat with me? 07:40, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As I said at my talk page, using the banner to trick others qualifies as a spoof of the MediaWiki interface, which is prohibited by WP:SMI. Goodvac (talk) 07:42, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
While I believe you're right, Goodvac, this identical "trick" has been used by many people without challenge, and I suspect that a discussion will be necessary to clarify if this is allowed or not. GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 08:41, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It has already been discussed extensively, see for example Wikipedia talk:User pages/UI spoofing. It's very clearly covered by the wording in WP:SMI which I think was originally written exactly to stop this practical joke. Others have been told to remove it. I have personally told at least one user to do it and he complied. Don't break rules just because you have seen others get away with it. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:20, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The current language results from Wikipedia talk:User pages/Archive 7#Prohibition on shock value, which was sparked by an incident where a user was linking people to Adolph Hitler and Nazi Germany through their joke banner (see here). It was not intended to prohibit relatively innocuous uses, since past discussion was not to prohibit them; the "strongly discouraged" language resulted from that earlier large discussion--a phrase that is irreconcilable with "prohibited". The language added more recently, "Inappropriate internal or external links that unexpectedly direct the reader to unreasonable locations", was not intended to contradict "strongly discouraged" but to rope in a wide variety of more clearly inappropriate spoofing, like the one that ended up at ANI.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:42, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter, I left a note with someone who used this trick before as well to rather different effect, it was ignored. This was several months ago when I was rather less confident with the rules. WP:SMI also only "strongly discourages" simulating the interface, rather than outright forbidding it, so presumably consensus isn't 100% clear on this. Perhaps a discussion should be started to alter the wording to prohibit simulating the interface in this sort of way, if consensus supports it. GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 14:53, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It would be desirable to get more explicit consensus on this. Goodvac (talk) 20:11, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Looking back at User talk:Extra999/Archive 1#Fake new messages banner, I only said: "The practical joke on your user page is strongly discouraged by Wikipedia:User pages#Simulated MediaWiki interfaces." The user removed it.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 21:22, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Link error on my userpage

One of my links in the "My Backlog" section of my userpage is not working. (Well, it did this morning but not anymore) Anyway, here's the details:

These links link to a random article which automatically goes to the article with that specific maintenance template. I know that this link and this link works, but the link I use the most, which is this one, doesn't appear to work, and instead, it brings up a message saying "random article redirects to a random article in a category. Could not get an article matching these conditions.". I checked on my userpage history, and no-one changed the text. I looked at the original category, and realised it hasn't been moved either. Is this a technical problem? Minimac (talk) 11:56, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

want to edit Carl Franklin's site

I worked on Punk listed in his filmography. I have recently (Oct. 23rd) seen "Bless Me Ultima" as a play in Clovis, New Mexico. In the program it mentions that the filming that I even saw happening a week ago in Sante Fe as I drove by the Art Institute there, was this book/play being made into a movie directed by Carl Franklin, per SanteFeNewMexican.com. Since you are both asking for verification and new information about this writer/director, I thought listing his current production was appropriate. I have never tried to add or edit anything before on wikipedia, though someone has also posted a page about me. It seems that the categories I would edit: writing and filmography additions are not allowing me to add this to them. Editing music articles created by the band themselves

I've been doing some editing on band articles. Just removing red links mainly or (for example) a House music DJ who ended up in the reggae artist list. What are the guidelines for bands that create an article about themselves and then in their discography provide links to album articles that they created that contains only a track listing, date release and picture of the cover. It doesn't make sense when the external links they provide usually lead to their Discog or MySpace profile for them to have a link to a whole Wikipedia page dedicated to a single album release. If a band release 10 albums that would end up generating 11 pages including the main article. Many of the bands are local and not fulltime musicians and seem to be seeking exposure and trying to increase their Google rank. I have nothing against these bands since they may have a large local following that would warrant inclusion but can I request pages that they created for each album release to be removed or incorporated into their main article.

Self-published website full of OR and POV so you're right to delete the link, but consider warning the IP on their talk page not to re-add the link. Template uw-spam1 and its three consecutively numbered fellows would be appropriate (remember to subst them). Following the warning procedure in this way makes it easier to get the spamming IP address blocked if they continue to add inappropriate links (and hopefully saves them from a block if they were unaware that their edits were in breach of policy until the warnings began). Thanks! if I saw his name in red in Wikipedia, is this enough? is this some kind of invitation to editing? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.83.218.224 (talk) 00:57, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A red link doesn't say whether the person is notable. See Wikipedia:Red link. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:49, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wrongly accused of doctoring websites

Please take note I/we were NOT responsible for ANY of the actions suggested below. The IP addresses with a number of ISPs , Telstra included actually can be held by different users, therefore your "evidence" is unreliable as although I/we may have held it on more than on occasion in the past so could many other users. I had this same problem with pay per click advertising where our Google Adword was clicked many times by bogus individuals in order to a)obtain a commission b)diminish our advertisng budget. I am quite surprised you were not aware of block allocation IP addresses. Also I am interested in who supplied you the information that enabled you to contact us. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.151.87.230 (talk) 02:08, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I removed your unformatted copy of User talk:203.45.212.102 because it was hard to read and people can just click the link there instead. Wikipedia knows about shared IP addresses as shown by the box at the bottom of User talk:203.45.212.102 which says:
"This is the discussion page for an IP user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. If you are an IP user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other IP users. Registering also hides your IP address."
If you were contacted in another way than the message at User talk:203.45.212.102 and an orange You have new messages banner linking there when you visited Wikipedia then I don't know who did it or how. The messages are dated and are responses to the edits made from the IP address in the past: Special:Contributions/203.45.212.102. If somebody edits Wikipedia without being logged in to a user account then the used IP address is stored as author of the edit. The block of the IP address was only for 24 hours and has expired so you can just ignore the messages when the edits were made by somebody else who had the IP address at the time. Formatting:How do I position this template directly beneath the infobox?

Template:Depression video Hi. How do I get this box (Template:Depression_video) to sit just below the infobox at Major depressive disorder (per this discussion)? When I insert its code below the code for the infobox, the video box appears on the left at the beginning of the article. Anthony (talk) 05:19, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List of Flags for Articles

Hi, I've been on Wikipedia for a while, but I just now remembered the password for my account. I spend a lot of time on Wikipedia, just browsing random articles and clicking around to learn cool new things from Wikipedia. However, there are quite a few articles that I've run across that need clarifying, removal of biased language, removal of advertising language, etc. I know a few of the codes to mark an article, such as the "Advertising| current date" and others, but I was wondering if there was a comprehensive listing of flags that I could use if I did come across such an article. I am not all-knowing, but I would still like to help mark articles as "needing improvement" or "needs clarification" so that someone with the proper knowledge of the subject can come and do a more accurate rewrite than I could. If someone could please edit or reply to this and put a link to the page, I would be very grateful.

Note: I didn't just come here as a first option. I did search quite a bit for "Wikipedia Flags" or "Wikipedia Markups" but I don't know the term that Wikipedia uses for such markups. Even if someone can't locate (or if it doesn't exist) the page with these codes on it, could they possibly reply with a list of different notes that I would use most often? I know a few, but I definitely want to help the Wikipedia articles that I don't know much about become better and more accurate. Thanks!

Hi TR1N3TY. Is the list at Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup what you're looking for? (I believe what you're referring to as "flags" maps to what's known as "templates" in Wikipedia jargon.)
You might also find it useful to install Twinkle, a set of scripts that helps you to tag and watchlist articles requiring cleanup very simply. (There's also some standard advice to give out at this point, to the effect that it's not a good idea to get too template-happy: it's always preferable to make a fix yourself if you know how to do so rather than to tag the article for someone else's attention. But I know there are times when there's no alternative to tagging an article to enlist outside help.) Gonzonoir (talk) 08:58, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For more than just Cleanup, see Wikipedia:Template messages. Dismas|(talk) 09:01, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
