Hi. I really need some administrator-to-administrator advice. Can you offer your opinions on Question 2 - 5 that I've posed at the top of this discussion?

Hi Mindspillage, it's been a while since I've posted here! I hope you are well. I need some help with understanding this template as it is used in a lot of places. This template makes it easy to license contributions simultaneously under both the Creative Commons Attribution "Share-Alike" and "Non-Commercial Share-Alike license". However, I think these licenses are incompatible with each other and I feel something should be done to clarify whether this is true or otherwise. My concern is that we have a number of contributors at Wikiversity licensing learning materials partly inspired by this template for years now. I'd like to be able to suggest something concrete to these users about what to do now that at Wikiversity we have some awareness of a potential problem down the road. --HappyCamper 16:23, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I don't think this sort of multi-licensing presents a problem. So long as the material is licensed under at least one license that is acceptable for the projects (generally CC-BY-SA or CC-BY), whichever other license the author also chooses to release it under doesn't matter.

When you contribute material to a Wikimedia project, you allow Wikimedia to host it under the terms of the acceptable free license. But that license is not exclusive—you may grant anyone else any other license you choose, but the recipient is always free to use it under the terms of the license of the project it is posted on, too. Greetings! It's best if I don't get involved in the specifics of BLP complaints. Referring them to the OTRS agents for handling details involving personal inforamation is generally a good idea, though. You can also use the BLP noticeboard to get experienced eyes on a issue. I disagree vehemently with Point 7 however - there's no "assumption" in play, I am clearly more intelligent than my opponent, and can provide WP:RS to that effect (aka, my own opinion, which is obviously reliable, because I am more intelligent, QED). My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. My evidence unfortunately is only a cc'd email claiming to originate from a niece of the composer, now in her eighties (I do not say I have reason to doubt this, just that laws of evidence and Wikipedia would probably only allow this to be cited as "Personal correspondence with..." and one accepts or doesn't accept that... - but the person explains the situation with "Rebecca Thacher Clarke" (as name) fairly convincingly (Agnes Helferich was her mother's maiden name; indeed it would have been fairly unusual to give someone one's mother's name while they were still living for a middle name. Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. I recently was editing an article on the 2013 protests in Turkey, where it appears that human rights abuses have been committed by the government, when an interesting thought occurred to me. If I were in Turkey, would I feel "safe" to edit or read Wikipedia?

I myself happen to be a US citizen, so naturally I have a certain trust in the US govt. But I can't expect an editor in Turkey to have that same trust.

Knowing that information-sharing happens across nations with US-allies, a protestor in Istanbul could reasonably fear that an edit to Wikipedia might eventually be shared with the government in Turkey, where the Turkish government might not have the same respect for human rights that we in the US enjoy. That fear hurts our mission.

I read that some 40+ groups are involved in speaking out against this level of data collection, including the ACLU, the EFF, and the American Library Association.

My general experience has been that when the ACLU,EFF,& ALA all do something, the WMF should probably do the same thing.

I considered sending this to the entire board, but honestly, you're the world's only attorney who's a "wikimedian first". You are uniquely suited to handle this particular matter, and I trust you to make sure that WMF handles this issues as best as possible. --HectorMoffet (talk) 08:58, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Luce Foundation Center

In a discussion with Jimmy Wales on the moral rights of the photographers and the personal rights of the subjects, he said "I think that the commons community has gone down a very sad and disappointing path with respect to ethical matters. My views on this are not new, and are well known. Our project is a grand humanitarian effort. That it has been hijacked by people who do not share our values is something that needs to be fixed."

We further requested him to bring this matter to the attention of WMF and make a resolution or something to force Commons make enough policies to protect our rights as a photographer and our commitments to our subjects. He replied: "I am just one board member on this issue. I will continue to call this to the attention of the board and staff, but I need help from the community to illustrate that this is a problem that concerns many of us."

Thank you for the notification. (However, my board term is ending in a week, so I will not have the opportunity to consider the issue!) I note that some of the discussion is confusing "moral rights" as a legal term of art for a set of rights sometimes attached to copyright with moral concerns in general, including those for subjects, which are frequently very different things. As an attorney for Creative Commons I think it is absolutely correct that the licenses minimize the effect of moral rights as much as possible (the drafts for the new version are public, and make that clearer; our public wiki has more on the topic). But what Commons does as a matter of policy should not rely on any effect or non-effect of the copyright law definition of "moral rights"--Commons should do the "right thing". I do think that as a community Commons should take much more care with being sure that subjects of photos are fully consenting (and I say that despite the fact that my opinion diverges from Jimmy's on the proper scope of Commons; I am fully in favor of having educationally-relevant images of the full range of topics covered, where subjects have given their informed consent, though I also think that this only works if we are not stupid about exercising editorial judgment--that we aim to inform readers as fully as they wish to be informed, but avoid being gratuituously shocking).
