Summary

Description

During mid-October 2012, strong winds ripped through the Northern Plains with sustained winds across South Dakota of 30 to 50 mph. Gusts were reported of over 60 and 70 mph. Modern conservation farming practices of leaving crop residue on the surface of the soil in fields “saved” many farm fields from damage by the devastating winds. The first two images show a protected field while the other images show the wind erosion on a nearby field that was left unprotected.

In South Dakota, it takes 500 years to make an inch of topsoil. Healthy soils can withstand wind and water erosion. Healthy soil allows water to infiltrate rather than run-off.
