Nederlands: Asen zijn altaren voor overledenen. Oorspronkelijk waren ze voorbehouden aan leden van het koninklijk hof, maar na de afschaffing van het hof door de Fransen, zochten de metaalbewerkers nieuwe clienten in de bevolking en onder buitenlanders. Het geloof in een voortbestaan van de ziel van overledenen zorgt ervoor dat men deze wil blijven vereren d.m.v. offerandes en andere rituele handelingen. Asen worden bewaard in de 'dehoho', afgezonderde éénkamerruimtes. Elk familielid krijgt zijn eigen asen. Binnen de dehoho vindt de communicatie tussen de levenden en doden plaats. Water wordt gesprenkeld om de geesten op te roepen; alcohol, voedsel en bloed wordt geofferd. De altaren zelf dienen ook als een soort offer. Volgens de Fon kunnen alleen de maker en de schenker van de asen de eventuele voorstellingen interpreteren. Soms wordt de overledene voorgesteld, maar ook typische Fon karakteristieken, verbeeldt in goden of spreekwoorden en gebedsliederen (Visona et. al. 2000:264-265). |
