A collection of images taken predominantly by Canadian journalist, editor, writer and amateur photographer Melvin Ormond (M. O.) Hammond (1876-1934). These images were previously digitized and represent only a portion of the 13,000 photographs that comprise the F 1075 M.O. Hammond fonds, housed at the Archives of Ontario. More images will be added as time permits.

The photographs reflect Hammond's career and interests as a journalist, writer, editor, amateur photographer and figure of the Canadian arts and literary scene in the early decades of the twentieth century. As an amateur photographer, Hammond saw the value of photography for journalism and used photography in documenting his interest in Canadian culture and history.

In addition to photographs of Canadian artists, politicians and others, the M. O. Hammond fonds contains images taken in Toronto between 1910 and 1930 that depict instances of Blackface, Brownface and other ethnic and racial prejudices that might be upsetting for some. These practices had a harmful impact then and still do today.

The Archives of Ontario has chosen to share these records to provide an accurate representation of the province’s history, and hopes these images serve as a valuable resource that offers an important perspective on the multifaceted history of people in Ontario, generates a deeper understanding of the past, and sparks scholarship and discussion for a more respectful future.
