BofI Holding, Inc.(NASDAQ : BOFI) is the holding company for BofI Federal Bank, which offers wholesale and consumer banking services solely online.[1] BofI Holding, Inc. is insured by the United States Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Currently it has over $2.0 Billion in assets.

Overview

The bank accepts various deposit products, including demand deposit, savings, and certificates of deposit accounts. It also provides loan products, which consist of single family loans, home equity loans, multifamily loans, commercial real estate loans, recreational vehicle and automobile loans, and overdraft lines of credit. In addition, the company offers online bill payment, interbank transfer, mobile banking, text message banking, ATM cards or VISA debit cards, and overdraft protection services. The bank serves approximately 36,000 retail deposit and loan customers across 50 states. Incorporated in 1999 and based in San Diego, California. [2]


History

BofI Holdings has opened several branches to act as niche banks for certain financial needs. One of these banks is UFB Direct, which focuses on Airline Mile rewards for debit transactions within a checking account. UFB Direct was known as one of the few financial institutions to keep an APY (Annual Percentage Yield) above 1.0% nationally for three months after its inception, sharing this APY with only five other banks at the time which include: Clear Sky Accounts, SFGI Direct, CNBBankDirect, Discover Bank, and Sallie Mae Bank. The Bank invests available funds in high-grade mortgage-backed securities, fixed income securities and preferred securities of government-sponsored entities. From time to time the bank also invest available funds in term deposits of other financial institutions. Its securities portfolio of $521.4 million at June 30, 2011 is composed of approximately 29.0% United States agency residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) and other debt securities issued by GSEs, primarily Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae; 3.7% Prime private-issue super senior, first-lien RMBS; 15.5% Alt-A, private-issue super senior, first-lien RMBS; 38.1% Pay-Option ARM, private-issue super senior first-lien RMBS; 7.0% Municipal securities and 6.7% other residential mortgage-backed, asset-backed and bank pooled trust preferred securities.[4].

Lending and Investment Activities

The bank takes on loan acquisitions. This is done through both retail and wholesale. The retail loans are loans originated from the consumers or broker agreement. On the wholesale end is purchasing the total disbursement from an array of different businesses. Its originations, purchases and sales of mortgage loans include both fixed and adjustable interest rate loans. Originations are sourced, underwritten, processed, controlled and tracked primarily through its customized websites and software. Its loans primarily consist of first mortgage loans secured by single family and multifamily properties and, to a lesser extent, commercial properties. The Bank also provides home equity second mortgages, primarily closed end loans and, to a lesser extent, lines of credit. The Bank offers or purchase fixed and adjustable rate, conforming and jumbo single family mortgage loans in all 50 states.[5]


BofI Holding remained one the few holding companies that has remained profitable throughout the economic recession of 2009 and 2010.[6]. Their earnings have been on an incline since 2009 to the present.[7]


BofI Common Stock

BofI’s common stock is listed on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the symbol "BOFI" and is a component of the Russell 3000 Index [8] Board of Directors has declared a cash dividend on BofI Holding, Inc.'s 6.0% Series B Non-Cumulative Perpetual Convertible Preferred Stock ("Series B Preferred") for the quarter ending. [9]


BofI Federal Bank, presented and attended one-on-one meetings with investors at the ROTH Capital Partners 24th Annual Conference in Dana Point, CA on March 11-14, 2012. [10]


The bank itself has been mentioned in several Russel Index 300 contributions, these include, but are not limited to the acquisition of the company by Sharewell Capital Group. This acquisition was for the sole purpose and benefit of keeping the investors. Sharewell Capital Group is traded on the NASDAQ global market under the Rusell 3000 index.

Corporate Philanthropy

The company has given support in various ways to different non-profit organizations [11] , such as: San Diego Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Rady's Children Hospital, and Wounded Warrior Project.
