Welcome to the American music WikiProject on the English Wikipedia! We are a group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to music of the United States.
Goals
- Standardize coverage of American music, songs and musicians.
- Improve lower-quality articles to Good or Featured status.
- Maintain and further improve articles already of high-quality.
Scope
- This purpose of this project is to standardize the coverage of American music, songs and musicians within Wikipedia. This includes deciding how pages should be formatted, which pages should and should not be created, designing templates, etc. This project is not yet completely defined, so feel free to make suggestions on the talk page.
Guidelines
- All articles related to American music should follow the notability guideline for music. See WP:Music
- Capitalization should follow the rules of the English Wikipedia, NOT the rules by academic sources. See WP:CAPITALIZATION
Acceptable charts
The following are acceptable charts and may be used in articles:
- Billboard charts - for albums, sales, singles and certifications only
- RIAA - for certifications only
*These sites do not archive the charts. You must manually archive the charts in order to source them. A website like WebCite is acceptable.
For more information, see WP:GOODCHARTS and WP:USCHARTS
Unacceptable charts
The following are unacceptable and should not be used in articles:
- Amazon
- ARC Weekly Top 40
- iTunes
- Radio Disney
- Viacom/MTV Networks Countdowns (VH1 VSpot and CMT Top 20 Countdowns)
- World Albums Top 40/World Singles Top 40
For more information, see WP:BADCHARTS

Tagging and Assessment
Any articles that are within the scope of this project should be tagged with {{WikiProject United States|class=|importance=|USMusic=|USMusic-importance=}}
banner. The resulting article ratings are used within the project to help in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work. They also play a role in the WP:1.0 program, which the WikiProject uses to help automate some of the assessing process.
- The template should be placed on the talk pages of relevant articles to put them under the project's radar. It looks like this:
![]() | United States: Music Unassessed | |||||||||
|
The assessment is done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WikiProject United States}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate sub-categories of Category:American music articles by quality. WP:1.0 also produces a statistics page, and a log of articles assessed.

Tips
?. | Use common sense. Ultimately, assume good faith on the part of others, be bold in editing because perfection is not required. See Wikipedia:Editing policy for more information. Before starting a new article! - Notability is a concern that must be adhered to. See Wikipedia:Notability (music) for more information. |
I. | Use references. This is an encyclopedia, so remember to include a ==References== section listing websites, newspapers, articles, books and other sources you used to write the article. New articles and statements added to existing articles may be deleted if unreferenced or referenced poorly. See Wikipedia:Verifiability, Wikipedia:Cite_sources and Wikipedia:References for more information. |
II. | Use proper spelling and grammar. This is a very important aspect of an article. "We want to learn editors to write proper" There are helpful guidelines in regards to styles. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (music) for more information. |
III. | Use footnotes. Take advantage of the footnote ability Wikipedia has, instead of including html links inside the context include them as footnotes. See Wikipedia:Footnotes on how to use them. |
IV. | Write a good lead. Be sure to write a lead that concisely summarizes the entire article into one or two paragraphs, which make sense to someone who may know nothing about the subjects in question. See Wikipedia:Lead section for more information. |
V. | Stay on topic. Many articles are criticized for length; sticking to the subject matter helps eliminate this. See Wikipedia:The perfect article for more information. |
VI. | Keep it simple. Remember that the average reader should be able to comprehend the erudition. Although you should use a broad vocabulary of regular, non-technical terms, do not provide such a quantity of locutions as to impel those who aspire to derive serviceable information from the article to consult a dictionary. |
VII. | Use images if possible. Images enhance articles greatly, but only use them when they are necessary, and ensure that their copyright status has been specified and we are allowed to use it on Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Images |
