Summary
DescriptionIziko Diictodon Corkscrew.JPG |
English: A natural cast of an underground burrow probably made by Diictodon. Several of these unusual spiral burrows are found together in what was formerly a community or 'township'. Very rarely curled-up skeletons of dicynodonts, like this one, have been found in the terinal chamber.
Scratch marks on the outside of the burrow cast match up with Diictodon's claws and tusks. They tunnelled into the dry floodplain soils and deliberately used their left leg more than their right leg so that the tunnel spiralled down ina clockwise direction. After two complete turns they were usually deep enough to excavate a terminal chamber that was just big enough to turn around in. |
